“Funkiest Hotel EVER super cool but not perfect”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2009

Walking into the Alstadt you feel like you've landed in a back-street youth hostel. The street floor door leads you into a dimly-lit corridor with one tiny sign "Hotel Alstadt Reception floor 2" . Every day coming or leaving , there was a confused customer looking about with bleary eyes and suitcases until someone would say " Hotel reception is up one floor"

The recpetion are is very underwelming. An outcove with a high desk, no lobby to speak of but behind a HEAVY set of doors an assortment of cool parlours and breakfast rooms are hidden. The art and lighting is FABULOUS, our suite was the most unique loft-like room we ever rented, and the breakfasts are lovely.

Downside...the bathroom. Crazy weird toilets, European tub with 1/4 door insuring a daily flood and a treacherous step in and out of the bath. NO SOAP BARS????? Just one liquid soap to be shuttled between the sink and shower...absolutely no counter space for cosmetics...DID LOOK COOL though.

Neighborhood- Not crazy about the uber quiet heavily garffittied streets. Most store fronts were shuttered or closed, a few (but not a ton) of restaurants withing a few blocks. NO RESTAURANT or food besides breakfast, no room service (husband was sick one night and I had to forage for something to go for him in the neighborhood)

Great staff! Enjoyed immensely, but would not return due to kinda depressed location

We stayed here for 2 nights in June. We had landed after 30 hours of flying and were exhausted. The hotel is not that easy to find so it is a good idea to know the street address before you leave the airport. It is close to the shopping and tourist areas and you can walk easily.
The welcome was friendly and very informative. We were given a map and advice about restaurants in the area.
The room was on the smaller side and the bathroom was tiny. The furnishings were very elegant and the bed was so comfortable. It was very clean. The street was quiet and the air conditioning good.
Breakfast was complimentary as was afternoon tea. This is served in a lovely lounge area.

Another good aspect was the free WiFi and computer access.

At times, the reception desk got very crowded and there was difficulty arranging things or a long wait.
They also only have one key per room which also could get very annoying at times

We arrived in Vienna exhausted after driving in from Salzburg - getting hopelessly lost in Vienna and then finding NO parking at this hotel. After unloading in front of the hotel with people homking and swerving around us, my husband found a parking garage two blocks away. Nightmare.
But then we went in and found this gorgeous place. Great people with a lot of very helpful advice. We were escorted to our room, very modern and beautifully decorated. The view was horrific, but it didn't matter - the room more than made up for it. Silky sheets and comfortable bed. Breakfast was great - and there is a nice bar in the main salon. This place is right in the middle of the Museum district, so you're close to lots of interesting places.

My husband and I had previously stayed in another hotel during our first few days in Vienna. The next few days we had gone out of town to Salzburg & Graz. I usually booked all the hotels way ahead of time and so based on the Tripadvisor, we were thinking we should pamper ourself to one of the top ten hotels from their list - so, I've chosen Alstadt. We were running a little late driving back from Graz. I gave a call to the Alstadt's reception, and told them about our late check-in......the friendly staff said "not a problem"....and so when we arrived (finally)....to our surprised our room was upgraded from the Classic room to the newly renovated "apartment room" on the 3rd floor - and it was amazing!! With the spacious living room (with trendy furniture) & bedroom, my husband and I really did not want to leave. If you have to ask me if there is any flaw...I would have to say that I needed to call for the bath towel (there isn't any in the bathroom, except one hand towel in the washroom). But other than that, the experience was fantastic.

To make the story short - great room, great staff, the breakfast was scrumptious, the interior of the hotel was unique, great location of the hotel as it you can take a nice walk to the MQ and the other museums nearyby.....my husband & I cant wait to go back, both Austria & Alstadt hotel.

This is a wonderful hotel. The service was excellent and the staff charming, pleasant and ever so helpful. English is spoken without hesitation.

Our bedroom had a large original canvas of a young woman artist in a bikini sitting painting on a beach. I loved the room, its painting, and the under floor heating in the bathroom was appreciated as were the complimentary chocolates. TV included BBC Prime along with a wide selection of channels. The bedrooms are spread amongst other apartments in the building but are in self contained corridors. There was a safe for valuables.

The Aldstadt is near the museum quarter and is well served by all types of public transport. The salon area is a brilliant innovation. It is used for the buffet breakfast which includes cooked eggs to your taste. In the afternoon there is tea and cake, all included, i.e. gratis. Later, you can have a glass of wine or a soft drink and enjoy the atmosphere. Best of all, there is a free computer with internet access, although sessions seem limited to 15 minutes, which is more than fair. Reception is on the first floor and there are two lifts (elevators) as well as gentle, carpeted, art filled stairs.

I liked the works of art best in this hotel. It was hard to find anything to criticise.

I read a review in a newspaper of this hotel about 7 years ago, liked the sound of it and cut the review out and kept it in case we ever made it to Vienna. It certainly lived up to its review and to all the positive comments on this site. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a very comfortable and quiet junior suite on arrival, which was about the size of our flat at home. Free tea and cake in the sitting rooms in the afternoon was a nice touch. Breakfasts were excellent with a very wide choice.

There are 2 lifts to reception, and the ground floor entrance is perfectly OK, so I don't understand why some reviewers seem to have a problem with this.

It's a perfectly straightforward walk into town. But, in the evening at least there's no need to go there; there's a good range of restaurants within 10 minutes walk of the hotel. Would recommend in particular eating in the garden at Witwe Bolte in Gutenberggasse and the Siebensternbrau brewhouse in Siebensterngasse.

Vienna is a beautiful city and we will return both there and to the Altstadt.

I love this hotel. Ultra stylish, beautiful rooms and wifi wherever you need it. Centrally located, within a 5 minute walk to the Ring and museums-area.
