“A lovely old building”
Reviewed 11 July 2013

We really enjoyed our stay here. It was on a major shopping street with a nearby subway stop and tram stop . The front desk was very friendly and helpful with giving us tips, directions, and recommendations. For an extra charge there is a wonderful buffet breakfast right on the corner by the hotel. If you eat that, all you will need is a small dinner somewhere that evening. The big bathtub was delightful. The room was clean and spacious. I won't mark them down for this, but there is internet in the lobby only.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the courtyard are very quiet, even with the windows open.

The strong opinas of this hotel are the situation, close to train, tram, and metro, and the kind staff (they offer us an umbrella when it wasup raining)
The Rioja was wide, vertical clean and confortable, but it doesn't have air conditionated and it's better if you ask for a room reachable by lift.

The location is fairly central as its walking distance from westbahnoff train station and metro. Trams staion is almost opposite the hotel. Size of room alloted was huge. view from the room faced an internal courtyard and was average. Needed to use the lost and found section of the hotel. Very efficiently handled by them. Free wifi in lobby worked well. Reception lobby decor should be more impressive. Overall experience good.

This is day 20 of a 40 day Europe trip.
I picked this hotel because I got a last minute half price deal, and because it was very close to the main train station.
I was initially impressed because the receptionist knew exactly who I was, where I was from and why language I spoke as I walked up to the counter, without having to say anything!
The room was quite spacious. The bathroom was huge! Even the handwash was cool.
BUT... no sound proofing! I'm not fussy about a small amount of noise. But I could hear a gig going on somewhere down the street, I could hear a rowdy group of guys in the lobby a floor below me. I could hear every footstep, door closing, suitcase crashing in the rooms around me. The place just echoed! I have to say people were generally quiet for most of the night. But there was no way I could sleep past 8am.

This being our first visit to Vienna I was was worried about finding a hotel in the best location for seeing everything. This hotel was perfect! It was very easy to get to from the airport by taking the easily located Airport Bus to Westbaunhof, (Railway Station) at 8 euros each (taxis are 45 euros!) and then walking for just 5 minutes down the road - get a mapguide of Vienna from Amazon for a few pounds. The airport bus is a 45 minute trip every 40 minutes 7-days a week between the airport and the station so it was an easy transfer both ways - they connect between the airport and other destinations too - see www.viennaairport.com for Postbus 'Vienna Lines', also for train connections - faster but more expensive!
The Hotel has english speaking receptionists and a lift to all floors. It has good spacious rooms, spotlessly clean, comfortable beds and ours had a seperate toilet as well as an ensuite bathroom, (over bath shower). The door lock is quirky but you soon get the knack! Checkout is 11am on day of departure.
You can book a number of events and excursions from the hotel - we booked and went to the Mozart Concert in the Golden Hall (close to the Opera House) which was very good - the Golden Hall is amazing on its own, (cost around 60+ euros each). We also booked the full day Danube excursion, (around 65 euros each) which includes a coach tour, one hour river trip on a boat with restaurant serving excellent lunch (lunch not included in cost of excursion), tour of the Monastery at Melk, then return by coach to the city - fantastic value. Beware though, (despite what your hotel may say), you are picked up from your hotel by mini-bus to another coach and then to a central meeting point to your final coach transport but you will not be transferred back to your hotel at the end of the day from the central meeting point, (near the Opera House), you have to make your own way back to your hotel - so don't forget your city map or money for a taxi! We knew the area well by this point so stopped for a leisurly dinner and strolled back to our hotel as it was a lovely evening, but many of our fellow travellers had no idea how to get back to their hotels and all had been told that they would be transferred back!

Mariahilfer Strauss is one of the best shopping streets in the city and the Hotel is near to one end with the Museum quarter about a mile away at the other end. So its an easy stroll to get to most places including the principle buildings and parks, we stopped for coffee and a pastry for breakfast at one of the hundreds of pavement cafes on the way and later for lunch before strolling slowly back! Beware the multiple crossings for bikes, trams and traffic at every junction, it just requires patience waiting for the little green crossing light man to appear! Watch out for bicycles, there are hundreds and they have designated pathways on the pavements which you can stray into unaware.

The hotel does not have any catering facilities, (has a snack/cold drink dispensing machine in the foyer),you can buy a token for breakfast at 8 euro which is served at the nearby Mariahilferbrau (Tavern/Restaurant) - just on the next corner to the hotel. Breakfast purchased directly from this restaurant costs 9.5 euro, so its a saving. Offering is the ususal continental version but there is lots of it and it includes, what passes for bacon on the continent, scrambled eggs and Austrian sausage. Alternatively go across the road to the bakery for fantastic coffee and a freshly baked croussant or danish pastry for about 10 euros for two people- depending on the pastry you choose! The Mariahilferbrau is excellent for dinner in the evening - we tried the ribs and the schnitzel - both very good.

Some of the area near the hotel and the bottom end of Mariahilfer Strauss appears a bit tatty and run-down and the parts around the road junction near the Westbaunhof station seems to attract a few beggars, and those 'under the influence' but nothing threatening, just the usual colourful characters of a big city. The rest of the areas you will see are spotlessly clean and the architechture is fascinating.

Tip - despite the weather forecast pack a lightweight waterproof 'pac-a-mac' and a telescopic umbrella that you can stuff in your backpack or handbag. We found that although the forecast was for hot sun the region is subject to short cloudbursts and longer showers without much warning!

Very close to WestBahnhof which gives you easy access to the centre around Stephanpladtz via the efficient metro (U3 line). Very friendly staff on all shifts. There is a certain faded grandeur to the staircases but they could do a little better with the decor in communal areas. Breakfast is 8 euros in a nearby tavern Mariahilfstrasse Brau and is good value. Rooms are clean although finishing is basic and beds are small . Worth the money and good deals can be had.
