“Good value hotel near Westbahnhof”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2014

On the plus side, it's convenient for the Westbahnhof (about 250 yards down the street - if you don't want to walk it there's a tram) and the centre, it's good value for Vienna, and above all the staff are understanding and considerate.

On the negative side, rooms can be small (or mine was anyway, but the bathroom was OK), and so can beds (ditto), room locks can be hard to work, and there isn't a bar or a restaurant. You're sent next door for breakfast, or you can go across the road and have it at the excellent Backerei-Konditorei Josef Schrott.

On the whole I was very pleased. If I go back to Vienna I'll stay there again.

Lovely big rooms, friendly staff, and very clean, and with a balcony (which doubled as a fridge overnight) we enjoyed our stay immensely. 10 minutes on the tram to Schloss Schonbrunn, a little over half an hour to walk into town, or a 5 minute walk to Westbahnhof and a 5 minute ride on the underground.

There's a first rate bakery over the road that opens at 7am (including Sunday) that will do you a takeaway continental breakfast for about 4 euros, they even lent us a butter knife. There's a shop a just a few doors along that does cake and gelato, a cash machine within a minute's walk, grocery shops, and a whole selection of takeaway joints and eat-in places within easy walking distance.

Only problems were the lack of WiFi in the rooms (really helpful in a foreign city), no tea/coffee facilities (wasn't a problem, just a minor irritation) and the fact that the beds are two singles pushed together that drift apart while...ahem...using them for anything other than sleep. That particular memory is quite amusing but wasn't exactly part of the plan for the evening.

Stayed there for a long weekend in Vienna. The room was large and comfortable. It was an easy underground ride to the center. For the amount paid I thought it was amazing value for money. It was annoyong that you couldn't even have the option of getting wifi in the rooms, and that is the only reason I am not giving it 5 stars,

Good place to stay for a weekend. 4-5 min walk from Westbahghof station. 5 min by metro to Stephanplaz (city center). Big room, terrible view - we saw tubes and other windows just opposite us. No fridge, no wi-fi, tinny sheets. Breakfast is outside hotel, 9 euro, if you don't have a time to walk and eat somewhere else, you can have it there - ham, cheese, eggs, sausages, scrambled eggs, pancakes, veg, fruits, yogurt etc. pretty ok. Hotel is very old, floor creaks) but if you came to see city, that's a good place to save money, and stay in a good place. And you can go by tram to Schönbrunn palace 7-10 min right from the hotel! Shopping street is very near.

Stayed here after reading the reviews. Was concerned about it being a bit further out but I should have been! I thought the location was excellent (and safe), just a short 5min walk and I could get absolutely anywhere in city. Also next door is the Mariahilferbrau restaurant! Perfect food. Highly, highly recommend.

The rooms were clean and large (we had a courtyard view). Only negative about the room was the tiny tv but who goes on holiday to watch tv? It was lovely and toasty in December too.

Staff were friendly and faultless with perfect English.

Although we use internet a lot, it was such a big deal that we had to go to the lobby to use it. If they could fix this, I would have given 5*. But again, it was fast and it worked so it wasn't a big deal.

The key card is a bit of a faff but the fake door demonstration gave me a giggle.

Room Tip: Ask for a courtyard view.

Where to begin! We stayed there for 5 days in December, and the first thing to say is that it's definitely not four stars, maybe two.

The staff at reception varied from rude to merely indifferent. At checkin, the guy at reception treated us with disdain as if we were interrupting his afternoon. Halfway through checking us in, another couple of German speaking guests arrived, and while we were filling in the registration forms, he went over to serve them and ended up having what seemed a delightful time chatting and laughing with them and ignored us. When he got back to finishing our checkin, he ran through the formalities as quickly as he could and his disdain was back. At other times the staff on reception (there was only ever one person at any time) usually just ignored you walking past - once or twice someone greeted us, but it was rare. Reception is not 24 hour, so if you stay out late (or need to check in late) you need to let yourself in.

The hotel building hasn't aged well and is in need of freshening up - carpets, paintwork, etc are worn. The room was a decent size, but the floorboards squeaked, the TV was tiny, and no other facilities to speak of (no tea/coffee facilities, no iron/ironing board, etc).

The bed was the typical European approach of two single beds pushed together, but because of the wooden floors, it was very easy for the two beds to slide apart. At least in other European hotels with the two single beds approach, the beds seemed to actually stay together, but not at Mariahilf.

The bathroom was of a fair size, but the shower cubicle was tiny. The sheets and towels were clean, but have clearly had a long life and are thin. It took a few tries at setting the radiator to heat the room to a good temperature for sleeping - there is no thermostat, so you just have to guess to set the temperature. The room was cleaned daily, and the most positive thing I can say about this hotel was that it was kept clean.

The location was also not as good as I thought it might be. It is only about 5 minutes walk from Westbahnhof. And there are a couple of places nearby for breakfast, but after dark there's very limited restaurant options within walking distance. Overall there wasn't much useful around the immediate area of the hotel itself.

There is WiFi, but only in reception, not in the rooms. They do have one computer in reception for guests to use, but we saw the prices and it was ridiculously expensive. There's an Internet café a few minutes walk down the street if you need to use a computer at less than half the price.

When booking I knew that this was a budget hotel, but even judging it within that category, it falls well short. I've stayed at other budget hotels where the facilities are far better and the staff are much friendlier, and next time I'm in Vienna I'll definitely be staying elsewhere! Advice to others: if you want to be around the Westbahnhof area, there are a couple of other budget hotels that looked much nicer than Tourotel Mariahilf, so shop around.

This hotel has the very basic amenities but the one feature that they lacked was Wi-Fi in the rooms. It's free in the lobby but who wants to sit in the lobby to get online? Their breakfast costs 8 euros and is at the famous restaurant Mariahhilferbrau. It was nothing spectacular to be honest and the service at the restaurant sucked if you didn't speak German.

The room has no fridge and the fan in the bathroom was incredibly loud which would turn on and off by itself at random times.
