Let me make clear from start that the 5 rotten tomatoes apply to a hotel rated 5 stars. My review would have been definitely different in a 3 star hotel. So the following is related to the overall picture. If you come from a youth-hostel the hotel is definitely classy but in the stylish Vienna environment it is below average (given the problems it has).
Let me start with the staff. They are friendly but overwhelmed because too little in number (and inefficiently organized).
All the little details that make the difference are missing (calling the customer by his name, remember what he asked for 2 minutes ago).
Generally I would say (my impression) that the manager of that hotel is not aware of the problems of his hotel - we entered by a side entrance (clearly marked as hotel entrance) and stood ... somewhere in the middle of nowhere... staff members passed by (we had 2 bags and it could have been obvious that we were looking for the reception) and did not even great...
As said not a big deal in a youth hostel but a 5* hotel?!
We found the reception and at 5PM the room was not ready... cool, we definitely needed a shower, or better not. In Le Meridien Vienna we almost alert the coast-guard. It seemed some money was saved by asking a trainee architect to design open showers.
In short - the design went wrong and you cannot possibly take a shower without inundating the whole bathroom.
Receptionist was talking about the new AC installed... mmm ours was somewhere between "Freezer" and "Oven" ... impossible to tweak the temperature to an acceptable level.
Queen beds are French-size, you would not expect that in an US-group hotel... at least it could be clearly stated.
Personally I also do not like to soft mattresses but that is personal - on the other hand Vienna is the only Meridien/SPG I have found these kind of mattress.
The visual appearance of the room is nice - for my taste the layout lacks efficiency but again this is very subjective.
In summary the hotel is way to expensive for what it offers.
Let me finish on a positive note : The situation of the hotel is brilliant, many Vienna Landmarks are in walking distance.
