Vienna made a good impression on me the minute we landed with the amazing airport, fast train to city centre and easy to navigate underground. We'd travelled all night and were knackered to say the least, just eager to get to our room and have a good lie down.

We were too early to check in at the Hotel Rathaus. We even knew our room would not be ready but we just wanted to sit down in the warm. Unlike other hotels which might have sent us away, instead we were warmly welcomed, baggage taken from us for safekeeping, sat down and given free coffee and croissants in the bar whilst our room was prepared.

In no time the room was ready and we were inside. This was a treat, and no mistake. We were put in 003 - a spacious, immaculately designed and comfortable ground floor room with window-level soft seating and a huge deep bath.

We gladly cracked open a bottle of the Pinot Noir helpfully on sale in the room (not such a bad price all told) and started guzzling. Within minutes we were comfortable, warm and right at home. Not many hotels can match this.

Throughout our stay, everything was impeccable. The staff booked our restaurants and taxis for us immediately and without hesitation. The legendary breakfast is, indeed, up to the hype and will set you up beyond lunchtime if you time it right. Our room was the exact mi of fashionable and practicable and the service was spot on throughout.

Did I mention the free and quick wifi? The sensational cellar? The location perfectly outside the tourist whirlpool yet minutes from the action? Everything here added up positively and whatever minor niggles we had have already been forgotten.

The naysayers in recent reviews appear to be expecting some kind of five star experience for three/four star prices. The reality is if you want limitless decadence and fawning waiters in bow ties, there are plenty of Vienna hotels that cater for this at far more expensive prices. If you are realistic and seasoned traveller looking for a comfortable base with a touch of luxury whilst you explore Vienna, for a reasonable price, then the Wein & Design is absolutely the right call.

I heartily and fully recommend this hotel for a break in this captivating city. Book with confidence and enjoy.

Room Tip: Ground floor was extremely convenient.

we found this hotel on TA, and are so glad we did. It was a great find. The staff are friendly, multilingual and generally pleasant and helpful. (we left something at the hotel and they were kind enough to find it, notify us and then return it back to the U.S.) the location is fairly central and we found we could walk to most points of interest pretty easily. Our family of 4 had a great albeit cozy room, modern amenities and very clean. Each room is named after a winemaker and the wine theme is apparent throughout the hotel. The breakfast buffet alone is worth the price of admission. We will be back!!

I was booked into this hotel for a three night business trip in Vienna. I am glad that the company was paying and that I did not spend my hard earned cash at this place.

Firstly, be warned that if you plan to arrive early then make sure you arrange an early check in. We arrived at the hotel at about 11 am only to be told that the room would be ready at 2pm and the Restuarant only serves breakfast and not lunch.

After having checked in, I decided it was time for a shower after having unpacked and after the long flight from Johannesburg via Frankfurt. As I was about to hop into the shower, I realized that my toiletry bag was still in my suitcase. As I was leaning over my suitcase, stark naked, to fetch the toiletry bag the room door flung open by a member of staff who swiftly slammed the door shut upon seeing my naked butt. Thankfully my back was turned to the door. From then on I made sure I engaged the deadbolt on the door.

The next incident happened once I had showered. I have the habit of doing a quick check of what's in the mini bar against the inventory/price list provided due to a previous bad experience at another hotel. I noticed that one of the mini bottles of schnapps had a broken seal and was a lot emptier than the second bottle provided. I complained directly to reception that afternoon only to be met with blank stares. It took a second complaint the next evening to rectify the situation as I am not in the habit of paying for something I have not consumed especially when it is approx. 5EUR for a small bottle of schnapps.

It must be noted that the room I was in consisted of two single beds pushed together with two small single duvets placed upon each bed. These duvets are small and if you are used to a double bed or bigger then do not even consider this hotel. I found the duvet hopelessly inadequate even when both were placed next to each other.

On the morning of day 2 of my stay, I managed to find the manager at reception and I requested if they could please remove the two single duvets from my room and please replace with one double duvet. The reaction that I was met with from the manager was inexplicable and completely unacceptable. I was met with complete astonishment that I could even request such a thing. I was told that there are no double duvets in this hotel, let alone double beds, and that he has never heard of such a thing. When I told him that I was surprised by his reaction as this was normal everywhere else in the world I had travelled to. I was told that this was completely absurd in Austria and he has never heard of such a thing in a raised tone of voice. He then apologised for his reaction saying that he could not believe this request and was completely astonished by it. By now I decided to simply walk away as the manager was raising his voice and this situation had become embarrassing to say the least. Needless to say, if you want a proper double bed then this is definitely not the hotel to be staying in during your Austrian visit.

In conclusion, besides the inept manager, the staff was generally friendly but this hotel is not worth the money and it is absolutely amazing that they got to number 1 on TripAdvisor. Your money is best spent elsewhere. I will find a better hotel during my next business trip to Vienna and will never return to the ‘Rathouse’.

Dear guest from South Africa,

first of all I would like to thank you for taking your time to write such a long review.

And please accept my sincere apologies for the situation in your room, none of my colleagues wanted to bring you in a bad situation whilst beeing naked in the room.

I talked to the colleague and she told me she knocked on the door, however there was no response from inside and therefore she walked in...! Obviously neither of suffered any harm.

Your group arrived early and I feel sorry that 11 am not all rooms were ready, as we were fully booked the night before, however please remember, we could arrange to check in your room at 1:00 pm and I don´t think that we have to excuse ourselves for having no lunch. We run our hotel as a wine themed hotel garni with a very splendid breakfast buffet until 12 noon and then as of 4 pm we start with our wine lounge service.

Regarding the duvets: I well remember the situation and feel sorry if there was a lingual misunderstanding about different types of beds. None of our kingsize beds are "two single beds put together", all beds are 200 cm by 190 cm, however with two different mattresses, which is quite usual in Europe, and it is also quite usual in Europe two have the beds equipped with two duvets. As I am a person, who is always willing to learn from mistakes, I did researches on the internet where to get double duvets in Austria of high quality, suitable for hotel use..., and yes, we found a supplier and will have double sized duvets on demand in the near future. I do, however, admit that I was astonished on that request as I was never faced with a request like this before, even not from honeymooners. But again, double duvets are on the way and I am happy that our appreciated guests from South Africa now can order them.

By the way, I was travelling South Africa earlier this year and loved your country very much, unless there were also some different things (bedrooms, toilets etc) that were different than we used to have it here in Central Europe.

I would like to say sorry again for the inconviniences caused and will contact the travel department of the Miele company in order to make sure that their guests from abroad will find a hotel with all the equipments they used to have at home.

We booked Wein & Design a few months beforehand because of their TripAdvisor rating, and had put a cheeky note in about it being our honeymoon. Upon arrival, we were delighted to discover a beautiful room with a luxurious bathtub and rose petals and hearts scattered around the tub and on the bed, with two balloon hearts on the pillows. It's the little things - it really made us feel special!
We spent 4 nights and 5 days in Vienna, and it was absolutely perfect. After exhausting ourselves drinking gluhwein all day at the various Christmas markets around the city, we were always excited to get back to Wein & Design to relax. The room was absolutely gorgeous and spacious, clean, with a large luxurious shower, the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on (seriously - we even checked out the make of the pillows because they were that comfortable). We tend to enjoy a more rustic type of style, but it was fun and a nice change to be in a room decorated totally differently than our personal taste we have at our own home. It was also really quiet- always a plus!
Any questions we had about directions or events going on within the city Conrad and the staff were friendly and helpful, always pointing us in the right direction. The hotel was also in a great location for exploring the city.
We hope to return in 2014 for a convention, and can't wait to relax at Wein & Design again.

After reading the excellent reviews on TA I booked this hotel for my short break in Vienna as a treat for my girlfriends birthday! As I also love red wine the wine theme seemed promising! Luckily the description of 'wine themed rooms' wasnt the reason I booked the hotel as I'd have been very disappointed otherwise!
The service at the desk when we arrived was very pleasant and helpful but we realised as we stood in reception it wasn't going to be the luxury hotel we expected! The neighbourhood was slightly shabby looking but as described turned out to be superbly situated and within walking distance of most sights.
The rooms however were slightly odd looking and felt a bit like being in a box...mainly due to the repeating pattern on the walls, ceiling, curtain shutters and floor! The rooms are spacious but feel very bare and I remember half expecting Willy Wonka to appear from one of the cupboards playing his flute!
As for wine themed rooms...a name of a wine maker on the door and a bottle of wine (costing €28 if u want it) is as far as the theme goes! Oh and there's a wine bottle sticker on the toilet roll to stop it rolling off!
The room was clean to a degree and the bathroom was very nice especially the shower. After a night or so we did get used to the odd decor and we decided it could of been worse! How it got to number 1 on TA though I have no idea! Only reading the good reviews before purchasing was a mistake as I realised later the negative reviews are a lot more realistic!
Overall not bad for what we paid I suppose(€480 for 3 nights) but would of paid more for a better hotel had I not expected a lot more from this due to its position on TA! Vienna on the other hand was amazing, and I would recommend the State Hall Library at Hofburg to anyone going!

Dear guests from England,

thank you very much for your comment on TA.

Please believe us, we always try to give every guest the perfect room. So for younger couples (such as you are) we think our most recent decorated rooms with this fancy wall-floor-ceiling concept is the better option than for people of an elder age. And, of course, everybody is free to say when entering the room "I do not like that decor, can I have another one". We know this design causes sometimes controversal opinions, but this is what art is all about!?

Regarding the wine theme: I am sorry that we couldn´t attract you with our idea of running a wine hotel. Unfortunately you have never been to our winelounge where we do the tastings, have about 20 wines served by the glass and our bar staff is always keen on talking with our guests about wine and to introduce the Austrian wines to them. But it only works if the guests are showing up...:)!

The wines in the room are always the wines from the wine partner for each of the rooms, so in your room, of course, it were the wines from the Tement winery. The five wines you had in your room were ranging from Euro 21,00 to Euro 26,00.

I hope these belated information may bring you our idea a little bit closer and I feel very sorry we couldn´t do so from the very beginning and your stay with us didn´t meet all your expectations.

I would like to thank you again for choosing our hotel and we wish you a lovely Christmas season and maybe we see again if you give us the chance to do so.

Best regards from sunny Vienna,

Conrad Schröpel

I booked because of the TripAdvisor ratings. I found the hotel good value and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble, and I felt genuinely welcome. The wine is Austrian only, but Conrad and the rest of the staff are very knowledgeable and I enjoyed taking a virtual wine tasting tour during the week I was there.

The room was spacious and well appointed. Because it is a little off the beaten track it is very quiet, but it is a very easy walk right into the centre of Vienna, and of course the public transport is excellent, so it's no problem to get around. There are many good bars and restaurants in the quarter, within 5 minutes walk.

Breakfasts are excellent and service is attentive.

I will be back.

Room Tip: All the rooms are themed - take your pick

To start off, the hotel is very nice. The rooms are spacious, staff are friendly and it's clean enough. But here is the problem. After reading all the positive ratings on this forum our expectations were high. The design is original, but the quality of the furnishing is IKEA. The rooms are clean, but could be cleaner. The location is alright, but there are much better ones for better value. Unfortunately the double bed has separate matrasses and duvets. It is also very warm in the room.

My wife stayed at the Grand Hotel Wien the night before. For 10€ a night more you are in a real 5 star at a much better location. We chose this hotel because of the 3 nights for 2 offer and the extremely good rating.

We had a good stay, but won't return. For where and what the hotel is, there is better value out there.

I really liked the concept though, but remember only Austrian (not Australian) wine.

Herzlichst

Ihr

Conrad Schröpel
