“The best honeymoon hotel!”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

We spent four nights at the Rathaus. The room 205 was excellent, everything was clean, the room was bright, beds were super comfi and use of a safe and air con was included in price.

Service provided by all staff was excellent, everyone greeted you, reception staff was ever so smiley and helpful and always provided excellent local tips for restaurant, festivals and how to get around and they also booked us an amazing spa experience at Asiawan Spa Boutique.

The breakfast served is THE BEST we have ever had! The selection of gourmet food and drinks is never ending, staff is highly attentive and even though the price for breakfast seems like a lot in booking stage, we must say – you will not regret purchasing it! Just make sure you have about 2 hours to enjoy it all. ;-)

We were treated like kings here – we even got a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival as congratulation to the newlyweds!

We can only recommend this hotel – go and enjoy!

This is a fabulous little hotel, and as others have eloquently stated is well situated for many of Vienna's better sites. We stayed for 3 nights and walked nearly everywhere most days even though we bought a travel card for the public transport system - we just enjoyed the walk, you see so much more of a place on foot.

The staff are all very friendly, most have a smile on their face, and it is just a well run, clean hotel with almost every amenity you could possibly want. They even provided us with some bubble wrap when requested for packaging a couple of bottles of Austrian Riesling we'd bought to bring home with us.

The breakfast selection was extremely impressive for such a small hotel and rainfall shower we had was simply awesome too. I'd love one of those at home!

I really don't want to be harsh, as we did enjoy our our stay but it would be remiss of me not to mention a couple of negatives for us; firstly we didn't find the beds to be very comfortable. The mattress was fine but the main problem was the pillows; there were two large throw cushion type pillows that took up maybe 1/4 of the length of the bed when laid flat, and two other smaller normal sized pillows. Both of the pillow types were quite thin, and seemed to be a bit of a victory of style over substance if I'm honest. After the first night we requested a second pillow, and they were there when we got back to the room after a days sightseeing. Honestly we'd expected two of the more standard pillows. but were given two more larger pillows and they didn't really help. So neither of us really got a good nights sleep for the duration of our stay, and I ended up with a bit of a stiff neck.

The main reason we chose the hotel was its wine theme, and so the other gripe was that we'd booked a wine tasting well in advance with the hotel. That was all really well organised, and came with some plates of delicious antipasti - and there was a really good selection of different Austrian wines. It really was a good introduction to Austria as a wine country and was an enjoyable experience which I would have no hesitation to recommend to anyone who wants to learn a bit about Austrian wines, without it being in any way pretentious.

The problem was that we'd elected to do it outside in the sun trap of a courtyard that the hotel enjoys. It was lovely to start with as the courtyard was very quiet and intimate, but over the time we were seated there, the other tables began to fill with other people (guests of the hotel I assume) who almost all were there just to smoke. We are non-smokers, and actually we found that smoking in Vienna is a bit of a blight on the city, as there is almost nowhere you can go to get away from it - bars and restaurants all seem to accept smoking indoors, in outdoor dining areas, and next to other non-smoking diners who are still eating. That was the problem here, we were trying to do a tasting which involves savouring the wines and their aromas, and all we could smell was the smoke from the people around us. That was not the hotels fault at all, but was extremely disappointing.

Dear Guests from Newbury,

thank you very much for taking so much time to write this long review. I am more than happy to learn you had a pleasant stay with us and would like to express my apologies we couldn´t meet your expectations in terms of pillows and feel sorry your sleep was not the same as are used from your own bed at home. Most of our guests really enjoy the both pillows we provide in the rooms and for your comfort we also provide dawn pillows, neck rolls etc as outlined in our guest brochure on the desk. Please, feel free to ask for whatever you need for a perfect sleep!

Regarding the smoking in the outside courtyard: well it is always a challange to satisfy every guests´ needs. SMOKING IN OUR HOTEL IS ALLOWD OUTSIDE ONLY and I feel sorry that obviously on the day when you had your tasting there were other guests around you, who enjoyed their cigarette. It would have been no problem to move inside for second leg of your wine tasting. (Professional) wine tastings are always held inside, in rooms with no flowers, no other smell from whatever it may come from, no eau de toilette or other perfumes on the neck, no eggs or coffee before (KILLERS for winetastings!!!) ... :) I hope you don´t mind my suggestion regarding this!

However, your comments are a good eye opener to be even more sensitive regarding our guests´ needs and we will do so in order to avoid further disappointments.

Whenever you want to return in order to taste more Austrian (and we do also have three German vintners!!!) wine, please feel free to contact me directly and I assure you my utmost attention.

Best regards from sunny VIenna,

Conrad Schröpel

We had a really enjoyable stay at the hotel. The staff were warm, courteous and helpful. We liked the breakfast, especially as we were able to sit in their little courtyard garden, where we also enjoyed wine in the evening. We warmed to the hotel over the three nights that we stayed there, and would stay there again.

The room was comfortable and clean.

The only - slight - downside was that it is a bit of a walk to the city center, but not that bad.

Very good value for money.

Room Tip: Probably a higher floor would be a bit better, although our room was fine.

This hotel is a gem and a wonderful find in Vienna. The place is small, just minutes from the center. Service is attentive and friendly. The staff at the front desk and at the restaurant went out of their way to help us with special requests, taxis, restaurants and more. The rooms are very spacious, modern and clean and each reflect a winery. Breakfast, although not included in the price is outstanding. After several days, the hotel felt like home. And the price is very reasonable. Although there is an elevator from the reception to the rooms, there is a short flight of stairs to climb before actually entering the lobby area.

The perfect hotel. Our room (205) was somewhat larger than those of our friends on the same floor, but all were beautifully appointed in modern design that was a pleasure to inhabit. One of our friends said once he got into his room he didn't want to leave! The small restaurant was lovely inside and the outside garden was charming. There are fine breads and a variety of olive oils available all day if you need a snack. And the wine of course is excellent.

Room Tip: 205 was huge and offered a lovely view down the street of the city.

We have stayed her several times now and the location is perfect for just about everything.

The rooms are modern and stylish and the breakfast is an occasion in itself. The staff are all courteous, helpful and friendly and it is great to come back and see the same cheerful faces and we always feel welcomed like old friends rather than guests.

Conrad kindly upgraded us to the Atelier when we returned to Vienna for the last part of our holiday and we loved the massive room with huge windows. The small but perfect sun terrace is charming, with views of the backs of the surrounding houses, and into secret roof terraces and courtyards, one of which had a huge tree in the middle of it.

We wanted to go to the Heuriger in the outskirts of Vienna and first went to Grinzing, which was lovely. Then Conrad gave us information about how to get to Stammersdorf, where there are also some that are less well-known and less frequented by tourists. We had a fantastic day out there and walked all the way up Kellergasse and then enjoyed some tasty spare-ribs while gazing out past the vines to look over Vienna from the Stammersdorf hills. Naturally this was accompanied by some Gemischter Satz wine, which is made from "field blend grapes", a mixture of grape varieties.

We also had an impromptu wine tasting one evening in the bar with Conrad. Another evening we came back hungry from a visit to the opera, and so we sat outside in the courtyard with a couple of glasses of Zweigelt, and shared a huge platter of cheese, meats, olives and bread and fruit.

We plan to be back in December for Advent.
