“Now this! THIS is a coffeehouse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2013 via mobile

Stumbled across this beauty by accident while walking home. We couldn't resist going in.

This is a 19th century, chandelier bearing, dog welcoming, plush perfect little hideaway. Coffee was an espresso served with a thimbleful of milk and water on the side. The radler went down a treat too.

Go. You can see life as it was a hundred plus years ago and mix with the Viennese.

“The way to experience the Vienna Coffee house”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 March 2013

We spent 5 months in Vienna and, fortunately, lived near Zartl. We discovered it by accident but it became our regular spot - late for coffee and strudl or daytime as a place to sit and work. Unlike some of the better known cafes in the center of the city, this one rarely sees tourists and remains a comfortable place to sit for hours. Many are regulars - one elderly gentleman was there everyday, at his regular table, pouring over old music scores - we guessed he was a retired conductor. Good food, great pastry. My best day was toward the end of my stay when the waitress brought me my regular (cafe melange and a croissant) without my having to ask for it. The decor is a bit worn but that is its charm. Wouldn't visit Vienna again without stopping by.

“Classic Viennese Coffee House, Off the Beaten Path”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2012

Café Zartl is so far off the beaten path that I can’t quite understand how we even discovered it. Tucked away in the Third District near the Donau Canal, Zartl is well maintained, but has the appearance of being unchanged for decades -- lots of decades. It is a magnificent example of a classic Viennese coffee house. In the years after WWI, Zartl was a hangout for writers, including Robert Musil (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caf%C3%A9_Zartl).

Their menu extends well beyond afternoon pastry fare. Winter evening visits are perfect for a plate of Wiener Schnitzel or Goulash. A grand piano in the main room provides late-afternoon entertainment as guests, which I assume to be from the neighborhood, quietly read the house newspapers or magazines – all in German – and enjoy the wines and beers of Austria or an excellent coffee drink.

Zartl can be visited conveniently via the 1 Tram at the Rasumofskygasse stop from either Schwedenplatz or the Prater. For those visiting Rochusmarkt, Zartl is a short ride on the 4A bus from Rochusgasse, or a four-block walk toward the Donaukanal from Landstrasser Hauptstrasse along Kundmanngasse (left on Marxergasse).
