While staying in Vienna recently I wondered about the numerous Japanese Restaurants and Sushi Bars, but I was quite disappointed when I actually had a closer look, most of them seemed to be not really into authentic Japanese food......
The one exception was the Nihonbashi, which really stood out among the others. I went there twice, as it was not far from my Hotel (Imperial) and both times I was completely satisfied. One evening I was there with some Austrian and Hungarian business partners, and they also liked the food very much. Especially the tempura noodles and the various sushi that we tried were excellent. To get this freshness of fish and seafood in a landlocked country like Austria was something I had not expected.
They had even proper advice on wine going well with the main dishes, which is not easy with Japanese food.
The pricing is adequate for this quality, wine seemed even a bargain to me!

You don't expect first-class Japanese food in Vienna but here, slightly off the beaten track (between the Opera and the Charles Church) you can actually find it. The variety is impressive and allowed us to try many different things: Different types of tofu, delicious grilled mackerel, salmon, and halibut.....and of course all your favorite sushi. (The proximity to the fish market helps.) The all-Japanese waitress crew is remarkably friendly and also very knowledgeable when it comes to wines and sake. (There is a wide range of reds, whites and sakes waiting to be tested.)

This was one of the best Japanese restaurants we have ever tried. The fish was ultra fresh, the miso soup very tasty, and the service was pleasant if quite slow...we got a regular table but there is also a room with low Japanese tables. The place is great.

It is on a silent part of Kaerntner Street near the Opera House, looking small from the outside but quite big when you are inside. The designer paid a lot of attention to the details, down to traditional Japanese music and original chinaware. There is even a room with Japanese tables and private rooms like in Japan. The food is completely authentic: You can really taste the different mirin, soy sauces and kombu. The fish are fresh and melt in the mouth. The tea selection is also very good. Drinks are special too: There are many sake, Japanese whiskeys and Japanese beers.
