Wow. This all suite hotel is a wonderful blend of old luxury combined with flawless modern features. It is a great base to explore Vienna. Lots of nice touches as well which you may pay for in the tariff for but which add to the comfort - like free minibar, champers on arrival, free wifi, hamper provided in the car for our trip to the Airport and folding umbrellas (which were much more convenient). The breakfast (part of the tariff) was impeccable. Room service was also outstanding. The staff's approach was always to meet your needs - not to just to let you know what they can or can't do.

Fantastic property, build/renovated at the highest quality standards. Impeccable service. Superb breakfast. Excellent location. Great gourmet restaurant. Prices include breakfast & minibar (inclusive of champagne). All rooms have nespresso machines.
Entry level suites (almost 700EUR per night) have two floors, the bed and bath rooms are "upstairs" and are reached after climbing steep stairs. You have to use your security key 3-4 times depending which suite have been allocated to you. Sometimes the system even requires the usage of the security key to get out.
The first allocated suite was heated to sauna temperatures, I left immediately. The second suite was heavy polluted by cigar smoke, I left immediately. The third suite had problems with the TV, I left again. The hotel then acknowledged its problems and upgraded me to a beautiful "same floor suite". I visited the gourmet restaurant and left within 3 minutes because of a very loud group of drunks. The hotel again apologized and i took my dinner in the bar, the bill was waived. Breakfast is served in beautiful surroundings. The breakfast staff is naturally friendly and offers a superb service. I still do not understand the rule of serving a cappuccino with the milk at maximum 60 centigrade - it is not that warm and gets cold within 5 minutes. When you ask they are very happy to make one with hot milk.
Champions League soccer was not available in the rooms - only in the bar or in the Marriott bar opposite the street. Not acceptable for this price class.
All by all a very interesting experience. When you have 1000 EUR per night to spend, this is the place to be because you will be able to afford one of the larger " one floor" suites. Most of the staff is really trying to please the guests whenever they can. The weak spot are the 680EUR/night duplex suites.
But at 1000EUR/night expectations are very high and rooms and service have to be faultless and perfect. Well it is not.

Room Tip: be prepared to spend 1,000EUR for the larger suites. They are superb.

Dear guest,

Thank you very much for your comment from November 06th, 2012 about your stay at the Palais Coburg Residenz. We are always happy to get a feedback from our guests and appreciate the time that you have spent for writing a comment on Tripadvisor.

We are very sorry to hear that some things were not to your satisfaction. We would like to apologize for these inconveniences.

As every guest has a different taste we are very happy about the fact that the Palais Coburg offers 35 individual suites. Our reservation department is well considered to offer our guests the preferred suites. We noticed that you were not satisfied with your two-level-suite but we kindly ask you to understand that some of our guests appreciate the two levels. It allows them to separate the private rooms like the sleeping room and the bath room in the upper floor from the rooms on the ground floor where they can welcome guests or business partners. We see the individuality of our suites as a big advantage.

Please be informed that we also have one-level-suites for the price of € 670,-. We assume that they had been occupied during your stay otherwise we would have been happy to switch you to one of those suites.

Safety of our guests is one of the most important things in the Palais Coburg. We want our guests to feel really safe and comfortable. Our security system seems to be a little bit complicated in the beginning but we can assure you that it offers the highest safety and is easy to manage for our guests. Our regular guests attach high importance to the privacy that the Palais Coburg offers.

Thank you again for your comment on Tripadvisor. Your opinion and impressions are very important to us. Our goals of combining first class service with outstanding quality can be improved and evaluated through the feedback of our guests.

We would be very happy to welcome you back again soon as our valued guest!

Kind regards,

Management of the Palais Coburg Residence

I stayed 6 nights at the Palais Coburg in July 2012 and was entirely satisfied. This is a very nice place to stay. It well deserves 5 stars. The attitude, performance and helpfulness of the staff was excellent. The hotel is in a good, close-in location, inside the Ring. I walked everywhere in central Vienna. This is a relatively small hotel with 30-some suites. Its quality is worth paying for. I'd guess it is about 10 years old.

I have never had a quieter room. Mine was a smaller duplex suite with bedroom and main bath up the stairs overlooking the sitting room below. There was a half bath on the lower level along with a kitchen. I had no need or use of the kitchen. The room was bright and cheerful with floor to ceiling windows. The ceiling height for the sitting room was really high. It was appealingly decorated. The walls were yellow with white trim. Accents were gold and royal blue. There was a sofa, two comfortable chairs, a coffee table and a desk in the sitting room. Lighting was a bit dim for reading, but I had larger bulbs put in both floor lamps and that was better, but not great. There was a mid-size TV on each level and a DVD player in the sitting area. A large room safe was near the entry door. Storage capacity was well above average. There was a thermostat on each level and these worked well, maintaining an even temperature without excessive gusts of air.

At first I thought the stairs were a nuisance. When I was down I wanted something that was up and vice versa. But I quickly got used to the arrangement and came to like it. I looked at an alternative room on one level and rejected it as feeling cramped. My room was spacious.

The wi-fi internet was fast and reliable and was included in the room cost.

Breakfast was included in the room cost. It was good and service was efficient and friendly, but there was no breakfast menu. I had eggs cooked to order, along with the buffet, but if I'd had a menu I would have tried a larger selection. I had dinner twice in the garden restaurant and each dinner was superb. I did not try the Michelin 2-star restaurant. I did not need any better dining experience than what the garden restaurant provided.

The Palais Coburg is just about as good as it gets. I was sorry to leave. I won't think about staying anywhere else in Vienna.

Our second stay at this unique property. Much more than staying at a hotel. In reality, you're staying at a real palace and the accomadiations and service are in all ways, over the top. The room is a duplex suite with any and every amenity you can imagine. The service is over the top without being unctuous. The staff love this property and it shows. Nothing was too much trouble. Yes, it is pricey. But worth every euro.

Most taxis we took in Vienna hadn't heard of it so we kept telling them to take us to the Marriott (the hotel is behind it). Most rooms are duplexes; we found it very tedious to be in one and never really unpacked for our 3 night stay. The property is luxurious but has its quirks and weaknesses that reflect poorly on the architectural renovation and design. Air conditioning is a problem if you are in a heatwave because the top of a duplex is warmer and doesn't really cool down. We kept trading in the duvets for sheets and worried we'd be warm at night. The bathtubs are huge and the shower is in the tub but you have to reach inside at least 6 feet and hope your gymnastics abilities are adequate to reach over to the faucets to turn on the shower from outside the tub. The bathroom has poor safety features and it is scary to get in and out of the tub. Takes a while for the hot water to come on. The duplex has an office with a laptop but they are aged and are so slow on the internet as to be useless. The computer in the lobby meeting room downstairs is faster but doesn't have an @ key. We were told the management knows about this in-room computer problem for a long time and just doesn't deal with it. No BBC World News on the TV system. The spa had no weights; just cardio equipment. Silly corner cutting and design flaws for such a masterful renovation and at a property at this price level. The week we were there the concierge was on vacation (i don't know why they didn't have a stand-in) and some of the advice we received was pretty poor -- although some of the employees on duty turned out to be very knowledgeable and helpful such as Fabian at the front desk who gave us some excellent recommendations. At the end of the day, it is a 30 room property and you're not going to get certain aspects of what you get in a 300 room property. It is also an eerily quiet place at night inside and it has the feeling of a locked-down fortress (think of all those opening and closing doors in Get Smart) -- great if you like privacy but a bit eery if you are traveling alone. The Bristol is right across the opera house and at the entrance to the main shopping street, and this is about an 8 minute walk away from the cathedral once you get your bearings and learn the diaganol street plan . For the first 24 hours we didn't get it and kept taking a taxi or a 15 minute walk to get to the same place. That said, there is a lovely garden where breakfast is served. The kids enjoyed playing in the sandpit while we waited for brekke which was very good. It is across from the City Park (Stadtpark) where kids have a great time playing. The interior of the building is an interesting mix of old and new and be sure and have someone from the hotel take you on a tour of the restored palatial party rooms which are nicer than anything I saw at Schonbrun palace. The staff is certainly friendly and helpful and service is prompt. The building inside and outside is beautiful. The main thing here is that the physical property has its quirks and the uber-discreet nature of the place is not for everyone although we managed to leave our suite and its chandeliers intact even with a 4 and 5 year old in tow with rubber bouncing balls (that the hotel wackily gave us upon arrival along with other kiddie goodies). If I came back, I'd pass on the duplexes though.

Dear guest,

we would like to take the opportunity to comment your entry from September 11th, 2011. We are very sorry to hear that some things were not to your satisfaction. We would like to apologize for the inconveniences and furthermore give you some explanations regarding the related issues.

The Palais Coburg offers 35 individual suites. Therefore guest may not only select modern or traditional suites but also have the opportunity to choose between duplex suites and suites on one floor. Our reservation department is well considered to offer our guests the preferred suites. If we know your preferences in advance we are more than sure to reserve a suite that suits you.

All rooms in the building are equipped with air conditioning, which can be regulated separately by the guests. Furthermore our technical department is able to cool down the rooms additionally.

The bathrooms are of the highest standard. If requested by the guests we put anti slip mats in the bathtubs.

Please be assured that we are already working on the in-room computer issue. The laptops will be exchanged in the near future to offer our guests the highest technical standard.

Thank you for the remark about the missing TV channel. BBC World is one of the channels which is hard-coded on the TVs in the suites. We assume that there must have been a technical problem that caused the lack of this channel. We will make sure that BBC World will be coded in the future.

We are dreadfully sorry that you did not get the concierge recommendations that you expected during your stay. As you mentioned the chef concierge was on vacation. We would like to inform you that we have recently hired a junior concierge who will substitute the chef concierge during his absence.

In the end we would like to comment the topic concerning the security and privacy in our house. Our security system may seem to be a little bit complicated and different to that in other hotels but we can assure you that it offers the highest safety and is easy to manage for our guests. We are of the opinion that you can not compare the Palais Coburg with its 35 suites to a 300 room hotel. Our regular guests attach high importance to the privacy that the Palais Coburg offers.

Thank you very much for your comment on Tripadvisor. Your opinion and impressions are very important to us. Our goals of combining first class service with outstanding quality can be improved and evaluated through the feedback of our guests.

We would be very happy to welcome you and your family back again soon as our valued guests!

The Palais Coburg, ideally located in the heart of Vienna is a magnificent palace, just a few steps away from pictureous Stadtpark and quite close to the major sights. The hotel concept is truly unique around the globe. Well, they call themself a "Residence", and that is exactly what they are. A hidden Palais with 33 amazing suites, individually designed by preserving its historical treasures. The whole building is heritage protected, but it is still one of the most modern places I have been to. All staff are high professionals that make your stay memorable and give you the feeling of being at home away from home. There is a very nice but small Spa area on the 3rd floor with pool, jacuzzi, gym, sauna and steam bath. From the open terrace at the Spa you have a nice view to Vienna's vibrant city life. The only pity is, that the fine dining restaurant, which was one of the top restaurants in Europe is temporarily closed due to the chance of the chef. The “Weinbistro”, located on the first floor is a good place to have a light cosy meal, but I wouldn’t consider it as a fine dining high class restaurant. Better try one of the outstanding restaurants in the city like the “Steirereck” or the “Kim kocht”. It's quite hard to describe, what your impressions are while staying at the Palais Coburg. You have to experience it yourself. As mentioned in one of the previous ratings, most of the so called "luxury hotels" out there have to reconsider their quality concept. What the Palais Coburg has to offer is a lot, and you will be asked to pay a lot. But it is definitely worth it, and a certain price is ensuring its uniqueness. Also a very nice touch is the Mercedes Pullman limousine service, provided by the Palais Coburg. I hope to be back soon to this magical palace, as this place will remain my first choice residence in Vienna.
