We arrived by automobile from northern Italy late in the day. The GPS made finding this almost invisible hotel easy-though parking was the usual european city nightmare. A large city garage just across the very busy Mariahilfer Strasse proved to be as convenient as possible in this congested part of Vienna. We parked in the Das Tyrol reserved spots near the elevator, on level 2 below, and managed our luggage across the busy Mariahilfer Strasse and up the few steps to the Das Tyrol lobby. No porterage was available ( and none also when we departed). This is not a hotel for those with physical limitations. Hotel Tyrol charges 17 euros per day for parking-so be sure to ask-much less than the city garage rates, I believe.
Das Tyrol is lightly staffed but adequate. The quaint 3 person elevator works well-as long as it is 2 normally sized people(with luggage) or 3 small folks without. I tried it with two fellow travelers, both over 6 feet-the lift would go up but wouldn't let us off. Worked fine with less load, so be careful. Our room was tiny but attractive. We had a great view of the building next door-no matter; we came to see Vienna, and we did.
The best part of this hotel is the breakfast room-fine, expansive selection of everything one would expect in a continential morning meal-including excellent omelets made to your specifications. This is a real plus in the city of Vienna-where even a modest street food meal will cost 20 euros if you aren't careful.
Das Tyrol has a ultra modern Spa, with striking decor and amazing bath fixtures.
On our departure, Das Tyrol provided a boxed meal of sandwiches and fruit-a very nice touch-since we left around 6am to turn the car in and catch an early morning flight to Frankfurt (another nightmare airport)- since the breakfast room didn't open until later.
