This is a butterfly house housed in a Greenhouse just on the back of the Hoffburg. The space is not really big but the interior has been done like you're in the wild. Be prepared that the it is very hot and humid (I was with short pants and a t-shirt and was still hot). I expected the house to have hundreds of butterflies, instead there were a couple of species (4 or 5) and somewhere around 50 butterflies in total. So if you have not been in such a place go visit it, but don't raise your expectations too high.

The Butterfly collection is in an old Greenhouse in the middle of Vienna, just behind the Hofburg, and Albertina museum. It was so warm and humid inside, that I couldn't bear to stay there for more than 10 minutes, even with a t-shirt. It was worse than the warmest sauna. Taking pictures with the cold camera filling with steam was almost impossible. But, if you manage to survive the heat and humidity, you will be able to admire huge beautiful and colorfull butterflies, flying around, besides the beautiful tropical vegetation. Be aware that the small place could be croweded.

Having been to the Butterfly exhibit at the Krohn Conservatory in Cincinnati, OH, I was expecting a display along the same lines. Not so.
The quarters are cramped with many people muscling to get a shot of the butterflies. Essentially one type was fairly accessible. The remainder were high on the walls and totally not photogenic. Because of the extreme humidity (not the same at the Krohn), I struggled to get a decent photo but the lens never adjusted to the temperature and condensation continued to be a problem.
Although signs said don't touch the butterflies, nearly everyone was grabbing at the poor insects to get their photos taken with them. No supervision was evident.
I was also disappointed at the variety of tropic plants in the conservatory. Pretty much the same plants everywhere. Even the flowers were fakes, coated with honey as feeding stations.
If you want to warm up on a December day, I would suggest spending your money elsewhere.
Note: family members suggested that we don't leave our coats unsupervised out in the lobby area. No one watches them either.

In the middle of Vienna, 100 meters from Albertina there is a tropical place. Inside there are hundreds of colorful butterflies living in a blooming jungle. Beatiful creatures, beautiful place.

The whole place is extremely small. You get to see couple of butterflies with poor description signs in German only. Humid and temperature is extreme (butterfly house, you know) so leave your camera outside if it's colder, because condense will kill it. They don't however feel responsible for your staff in their locker-room, so I suggest you politely ask the lady that sells (way too expensive) tickets to hide it under the counter.
