A paternoster lift is a lift (elevator) which has no doors and never stops running. Never. In other words you have to jump in and out in time otherwise you will end up at the wrong floor. But don't fret, it goes really slowly. More fun than dangerous. This one must be about 100 years old and one of the last ones still in use in Europe so make sure you see it before they remove it. Enter the Rathaus from Felderstrasse and once inside turn right to find the paternoster.

Just like everything else in the city of Vienna, the Rathaus is seriously beautiful and very impressive.

It can only be visited during a guided tour. Depending on the program of the institution, a series of halls can be closed, which also happened in my case. The Council Chamber is huge and magnificent decorated. Also the staircase is impressive. The tour takes about an hour. Attention: it is mandatory to leave an ID at the entrance when you receive the audio-guide. The access is free, you don’t have to pay any fee. What I didn’t like was the extremely large number of participants in the tour, too many to feel comfortable. I think a limitation of their number to about 50 would be a good idea.
