“Ultimate Architectural Juxtaposition”
Reviewed 23 May 2014

All the guides talk about how controversial the Haas Haus is, blah blah blah.

The bottom line is you're not going to see "controversy" here. What you will see is two very interesting architectural specimens from extremely different eras in close enough proximity to view/photograph them together. If you like architecture or just enjoy contrasting esthetic expressions this is a neat stop. Besides, it's LITERALLY 20 paces from the front door of St. Stephens cathedral which you will be visiting if you're in Vienna anyhow... so, you may as well check this out too! Enjoy :)

“Must-take photo opp in Vienna”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

You're already at the St. Stephen's Cathedral, hopefully in the daytime and ideally in the late afternoon. Right across the street is this modern glass building with rounded edges. The reflection of the cathedral in the windows is gorgeous.

Some people might complain about the juxtaposition of such a hypermodern building with the gothic cathedral, but what could you put next to St. Stephen's that would blend in? Anything would look shabby and unimpressive. I like this idea of taking advantage of location to provide a unique photo opportunity. And it doesn't detract from the beauty of St. Stephen's - there is still some distance between the two, and the cathedral is so massive and tall that it's impossible to get the 2 structures in the same photo anyway.

Not surprisingly the Viennese objected to this building when it was erected in 1990.
It's the only modern house among all the neoclassical buildings in Stephensplatz.
It's unique point is the reflection of the Cathedral, but apart of this- it's completely out of place.

“Haas & Haas building - modern architecture in the historic center of Vienna”
Reviewed 19 March 2013

Interestingly located in Stephensplatz amongst a medieval and gothic cathedral and other neoclassical buildings is the Haas & Haas building, which is of a modern architectural design. Much of the building is like a mirror reflection, making it interesting to look at but noticeably out of place in this Historic location.

As others have pointed out, the interesting aspect of the Haas & Haas building is the reflections it produces on good weather days. If you stand in the right position within Stephensplatz, you can see almost full reflections of giant St. Stephen's Cathedral behind you.

While not a major attraction in Vienna this is a fun, short stop to make to try and see the reflection views of St. Stephens. Unfortunately, cloudy days produce poor photographs of the cathedral reflections.

There is also a hotel in this building as well as a popular bar on the 11th floor with nice views of Stephensplatz that might be worth checking out if intending to visit this area.

“A pretty photo opportunity but no more.”
Reviewed 5 January 2013

If you happen to be there, it's worth taking a photo of the Stephansdom reflected in the glass. It created huge controversy when it was built because of the conflicting architectural styles in the centre, but has become well liked because of the great reflection - on a fine day only.
