I wasn't sure what to expect from this hotel as there were mixed reviews...but upon arrival and first inspection my girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised. I've read that some people didn't get rooms in the refurbished areas but if that was the case we got lucky as our room was amazing. It was lovely and clean, well sized, very comfy and everything I'd expect from a 4 star hotel. Usually European hotels are a class below the UK ones (4 stars are usually 3 stars etc..) but with this we found it to be exactly what it was rated :)
Best thing about the room for us were the mood lights which changed colour behind the bed and the all-round glass shower in the middle of the room!!! Novelty things I know but this was half the reason I booked the room in the first place - great for a romantic getaway! It really topped off what was already a lovely room.
Location wise, when we were making our way to the hotel on the first day, in the snow, it seemed like it was a bit of a slog from the station and a bit hard to find. However, after the first evening and next day, it was actually close to the subway and easy to get to once you knew where you we going!
The breakfast in the hotel was also great. There was a lot of selection of meats, cereals, breads, teas, juices and everything else you wanted....it really made our morning something to look forward to and made the start of the days ahead great! The hotel staff we did talk to were pleasant and overall it was a great place to stay. We would definitely go back.
One final comment is, Vienna is a lovely place. Much like Rome but a little more spaced out. We visited when it was snow covered and it really made the experience that little more authentic! Also, make sure at some point you visit the ice rink which is like a winding path, near the government buildings...it looks lovely and in the middle of it there are stalls that sell you hot bratwurst in baguettes - they cut the top off, drill out the centre of the baguette, put the bratwurst in and fill it with ketchup...!! It was AMAZING!!! Worth the visit alone ;) Enjoy Vienna and enjoy the Hotel Wien-Westbanhof! :)
