“Great hospitality and interesting cultural experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 October 2008

I was able to stay for five nights at Edith's B&B in Vienna in the baroque suite which was large and nearly 15 foot ceiling made it seem huge. There was a loft for sleeping which is part of the room, so no additional privacy as it in a open space. Decoration was period like and those who know about antiques and furtinute styles would really appreciate it. I enjoyed the cable TV and region free DVD player availability along with the WiFi Internet. Bathroom and toilet was separate which was great and having the airconditioner in the middle of August made the place seem like heaven! I'm sure many of you know the European tradition of avoiding aircondition if possible.
Edith's breakfast was luxurious and not just because the hot kaiser rolls, real butter and Viennese coffee, but the company was great from France and Italy. History, culture, politics and other subjects were on the table as well... felt like my college days. Edith's knowledge of the cultural life of Vienna and the ability to get tickets on a short notice to the Opera are unmatched. If you are looking for a home stay style with some European sophistication added in a great centarl location, then this is the B&B for you. I read some of the comments here, but I think people are mislead by the Internet listings providers. This is a family B&B as it should be, not vacation rentals, not apartment for rent and not a motel.

I have to agree closely with the other reviewer who spoke the truth. This was a flat-out weird place to stay. True, the location is good, the cafe nearby is fantastic, and it is relatively quiet. But also true are the facts that Edith herself is too intrusive (for my taste) and politically out-spoken (which can be uncomfortable for many people). The breakfast was meager to say the least, with leftovers the next day. Not at all what you see in most B&Bs, which are generous and healthy. Edith came to the breakfast table quite late, in a disheveled state, and proceeded to initiate an uncomfortable conversation about the American military in Europe. The house is crammed with a distasteful array of statues and art and the whole place is extremely musty. When I opened the windows to try and air the place out, she closed them and told me not to open them! I would not stay there again if someone paid me. Vienna is a fabulous city with so much to offer. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

COMMENTS BY THE MANAGEMENT:: Bed and Breakfast places are private shared home accommodations - whereas a historic home in 19th century building kept in original face - can not be comparable with modern settings of profitable rental properties.
If people read the description they could recognize such differences - as we are particularly asking for respectful handling of our almost 100 years of family collection and sensitive handling of old setting. Windows are not allowed to open without help - if they force open the double oversized plates between them the shade - it could fall on their head obviously. All this could be prevented by prior communication - and travelers should not choose to stay here. Muslams definitely not, the women can not undress because other men may stay in the shared property.
My comment is proven by checking the reviews above; unacceptable "not for us" -
or EXCELLENT "will be back"

My wife, our three year old son and I stayed at the Buddha suite for six nights between June 25th and July 1st 2007. It was a wonderful experience.

Location : Fantastic. In district 1. One minute from the 1/2/D lines. 10-15 minutes walking from Stephanplatz. Right next to the beautiful Borse building.

The Facilities: We had a large suite which included a very large bedroom as well as smaller loft space, a kitchenette area, and a large bathroom all to ourselves. The room is a bit crowded, but it is filled with beautiful and interesting items.

Breakfast : Average. Pastries. Bread. Boiled Eggs and Some Cold Cuts (we are veg), Freshly Cut Tomatoes, Peppers, Onions etc, Tea/Coffee. Apparently, par for the course in vienna.

Computer with Free Internet Access

If you stay in one of the two suites, you will have all the privacy you need. She also does the laundry for you and yes, she does hang the laundry in your bathroom - but that did not bother us in the least, as it was such a nice convenience to have. Yes - the rooms dont lock, but no one ever bothered us when we were there.

Edith is a nice lady. She also owns inns in Budapest and interestingly, San Antonio texas (where she lived for over 30 years).

BottomLine: This is a great place to stay. Dont pay any attention to the negative reviews. You wont find a better place in Vienna for this price.

A friend and I were quite pleased - and not a little charmed - by the one night we spent at Edith's B&B in Vienna. Edith, who holds dual U.S. and Hungarian citizenship and speaks excellent English, was friendly and engaging, and we enjoyed the tour she gave of her house and learning about her background. We found the figurenes, statuettes, books, art work, wood carvings and other knicknacks she has collected from around the world fascinating, though the place was a bit cluttered with them. I slept in the bedroom loft both for a little privacy and for the mini adventure of climbing those steep, narrow and winding stairs. It was an interesting change from most B&Bs! My bed was large, comfortable and well-layered with blankets, and breakfast the next morning - coffee, cold cuts, cheese, bread and jams - though not a cooked one as we had enjoyed in other B&Bs on our bike trip through Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland - was quite sufficient. We and two other guests also enjoyed chatting with Edith over breakfast about her Hungarian heritage and her years in Texas. At 45 Euros apiece, it was one of the higher priced B&Bs on this particular trip, buth then again, that's Vienna.
The B&B we stayed in on our first night in town, by comparision, had very small rooms, was somewhat cramped and the owner both gruff and friendly, depending, apparently, on her mood at the time. We were happy to leave that one behind and find the little gem of Edith's. We would stay there again.

I found Edith's B+B Vienna on vrbo.com, and it was very disappointing. First, it was advertised as a private apartment, which it is not. Basically, you are living in her flat, with little privacy. The doors to your room don't lock, when we asked about that, Edith told us that her possessions were worth more than ours, so we shouldn't worry about theft. The rooms are extremely cluttered with knickknacks, which made it easy to lose something. Breakfast was allegedly served from 7-10am, but Edith doesn't get out of bed until 7:30am. She smokes in the kitchen too! Breakfast consists of some hard rolls, jam, processed cheese, and cold cuts. Edith eats with you during breakfast, usually talking politics and espousing her pro-Hungarian agenda, which made us (and the other guests) quite uneasy. We did not find her friendly at all. The "studio" apartment that she offers for 70 euros is a room right next to Edith's bedroom. The studio and Edith's room are separated by a curtain (not a door), and she has to walk through your "studio" to get to the rest of the flat! Additionally, the bedroom of the "studio" is up a ladder (like in a loft), except the ladder is extremely rickety and steep, a broken hip waiting to happen. Edith also advertises laundry facilities, but she refuses to let you do your own laundry. Instead, she insisted on doing our laundry for us, and then she refused to use the dryer. We came back to the B+B to find our underwear, shirts, etc hanging all over the flat, in the kitchen, bathroom, dining room, etc. The only positive thing was the location, which was in the inner Ring very close to the Metro.
