“Austrian Special Restaurant”
Reviewed 31 December 2013

We really enjoyed our meal at Plachutta. It was recommended by our hotel and it was great to go as it is an icon of Vienna. It gets very busy and glad we booked in advance.

We were really looking forward to having Tafelspitz and it was just what we pictured it to be! Wonderful meal and it was a treat. What makes the meal is the complement of dishes. We really thought it was great.

We would have given it a 5* but the service was a bit laid back and to themselves. The meal is an experience, so we think they needed to explain it better. They were efficient, but a bit to themselves and no smiles.

All in all, we enjoyed Plachutta and it is recommeded if you are in Vienna

“Nice for Austrian Specialties”
Reviewed 30 December 2013

On the recommendation of our hotel, we went to this restaurant for lunch on Christmas Day. Clearly, it is a "hometown favorite" as it was packed to the gills with Viennese families enjoying their Christmas lunch. Despite having made our reservations many weeks in advance, we were shown to a tiny table for two directly next to, and practically inside, a waiter/busboy station. Hmmm. I'd hate to think they did this simply because we were clearly American tourists but.....? Anyway, we politely requested a different table and eventually were seated at a table that was slightly larger and in a less congested location.

Since we had reservations for a multi-course dinner at Silvio Nickol that evening, we didn't want a large lunch also. We ordered the goose liver "creme brulee" to split as an appetizer (it was ethereal), and the tafelspitz to split as an entree. BTW, the tafelspitz is a very large portion that is so commonly split by diners that the restaurant quotes the sharing price on the menu.

Fo those who are unfamiliar with tafelspitz, the restaurant thoughtfully provides a little card explaining what the dish consists of, and how to eat it: essentially, the pot is brought to your table and first the broth from the pot is poured into a cup containing thin slivers of noodles having a crepe-like consistency. After it is consumed the waiter returns. Then marrow bones are removed from the pot and placed on a bread plate, so that the marrow can be scooped out and spread on top of bread like a savory jam. The boiled beef is then served along with any side vegetable which are ordered. We had potatoes, which were similar to hash-browns, and spinach. Both were delicious.

Now, as for the tafelspitz...Going into it I had my doubts as to how good boiled beef could be. Now having tasted it at what is supposed to be the best place for it in Vienna, I remain firmly in the camp of the unconverted. It was certainly tender, yes. The beef cut that is used for this particular dish guarantees that it will become more tender with long moist cooking. But is it particularly flavorful? Not to my tastebuds. It was simply too plain to be very appealing to me, even with the provided grated horseradish/apple (too mild) or sour cream toppings. That's just my 2 cents worth, and obviously many diners disagree with my assessment of the dish, as it was clearly the most commonly ordered entree in the restaurant. When we return, I'd like to give one of the other entrees on the menu a try, as I noticed several that looked appealing on nearby tables.

We especially appreciated the beautiful fine linens that adorned each of the tables....a nicety that is quickly disappearing even from fine restaurants.

Service was smooth, polished and professional; my impression is that many of the waiters have worked there for quite a while.

In conclusion, a very, very nice restaurant to sample typical Austrian specialties, which may or may not be to your taste!

“An excellent Austrian experience!”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

Four of us went on a Saturday evening but quite late - about nine - and we didn't have to book, though I think an hour earlier would have meant a wait. Classy restaurant near Stubentor U-Bahn station with waiters in snappy green aprons to match the decor, and the maitre'd in an Austrian jacket and bow tie. Most of the other diners seemed to be smartly dressed groups of Viennese out for dinner, of all ages. So if you want to fit in then don't wear jeans and trainers. I think when the place is full it would be pretty crowded and certainly the waiters had to reach around and across to serve people. But it wasn't a problem.

We were well served by the young smart waiters who all spoke good English and were attentive at all times. Two of us went for variations on the tafelspitz, one of us had steak and one had a very attractive prawn dish. With the tafelspitz you get a noodle and broth starter so three of us had that. We decided not to have starters as the puddings looked so good. The tafelspitz arrived with much ceremony in copper pans and was a real experience - with plenty of rosti potatoes and ham too. We had excellent puddings though the chestnut one is very intense so only for those who like such tastes as marron glacé.

Four mains, four puddings and drinks came to E160 so not a cheapie but it was a meal and an experience to remember.
