“Defining Casual Luxury”
Reviewed 3 April 2009

I just had the pleasure of a 10 day stay at The Ring and a stay of that length puts a hotel to the test and The Ring is a winner.

First the location. In the luxury zone with the Imperial, Grand and Bristol, this is a casual modern hotel but more luxurious than a W or Le Meridian. The hotel is only steps from a bus that circulates through the inner city and also next to trams which circle the Ringstrasse plus only a block to a subway station which can take you anywhere in Vienna. Also you are only steps from the Opera and Philharmonic. I can't imagine a better location in Vienna.

The room was one of the best I have ever had anywhere. Very spacious with large windows looking onto the Ringstrasse (I could see the Opera) and very well thought out with a working desk with converter plugs, high speed internet, comfortable chairs by the window, a small table and chairs for dining and endless luxury details. The room works.

The staff was exceptional and the service always prompt and friendly. Again in the course of 10 days you end up using many services like laundry, room service, special requests and the staff always excelled.

I hated to leave and can't wait to return.

I do not remember any hotel with these quality beds (it is a hotel you know). Very nice personnel, free internet, sauna with view on the Karlskirche. The only thing I have to get used to is the breakfast: not the common buffet, but package options from a menu, or just order your personal favourites. But good service here as well. And then the cocktail bar: you like Wodka? - You need to visit this outlet!
Finally I arrived in a hotel with huge LCD TV's, not those small ones, telling me 'we need to offer you modern equipment, but we do not like to invest'. Good bathroom, separate toilet. Best location in Vienna (Hofburg walking distance). Nothing came up to my mind that was missing. Perhaps not the most overwhelming lobby, but all important issues just TOP!

Dear 'Hotelschool', I deeply appreciate your review, we also do recognize often that the lobby is rather small, on the other hand it offers a very cosy atmosphere and fits to the size of the property. I would be very delighted to welcome you again in the near future! best regards

Although it rained almost all the time when visiting Vienna, this hotel was so relaxing and worth staying. I liked the room and staff was very nice and skilled. Only minus was the spa area, I expected something else. If there could be any kind of swimming pool or something...? Also the breakfast was almost too polished, because hotel is casual.
But...if I ever come back to Vienna, this is my place to stay.

Dear 'Nipsunen', many thanks for your nice review, it is much appreciated. I also welcome your feedback on our day spa, unfortunately, as you might understand, we did not have enough space to include a swimming pool, that is why our spa area has been defined as 'day spa'. But as you liked the hotel in general, I do hope we can welcome you again in the near future. Best regards

Stayed for 3 nights. Excellent clean room. Bathroom immaculate with Molton Brown replenished each day. Small spa area but massage after a day's sightseeing well worth having. On Saturday had latish lunch from their menu of the day at "eight" which was well prepared and good value. Went to the Tina Turner concert returning to "drings" bar 11.30pm but couldn't get a sandwich. Was asked if resident. They claim a 24 hr room service, though this was not available on Sat 7th Feb. There are a couple of snack stands on the corner near the hotel, so went out and brought in a burger. Drings bar small, but friendly. Went for leisure so no need of in room computer facilites. Used online computer in lobby.

When it’s -7c outside and you’ve spent the day strolling around what is possibly one of Europe’s most extravagant cities you need a base that is cosy, clean and as luxurious as its surroundings – so it will have to be The Ring. Located as centrally as you would like it, not bang in the middle but a short walk, the fairylight-fronted hotel stands out from its neighbours.
The service upon arrival was spot on and we experienced this great quality of service throughout our stay, with the restaurant staff excelling in their knowledge of the menu and making us feel extremely welcome despite being the only table dining that night (too cold for people to leave their homes, I guess), training is obviously a top priority here. I recommend having a meal in the ‘at eight’ restaurant, great menu with some curious sounding, but delicious tasting, dishes - and good value, too.
I don’t normally spend a lot of time in hotel rooms, especially when there’s a city to explore, but the large, well-proportioned ‘Special’ room was worth sticking around in. The bed was huge and if I tired of this extreme comfort I could jump onto one of the two sofas and swirl the pivoted television around and carry on watching that badly dubbed film.
The spa area is small but feels private with only a couple of other guests using the well-equipped gym area. I always think you can judge the quality of a hotel on its complimentary toiletries, here Molton Brown – casual luxury indeed.

Dear 'Alexdal',
greetings from Vienna and many thanks for your nice and constructive review. Your review indeed proofs that the overall concept of the hotel as well as 'value for money' are positioned e.g. expressed correctly. I would be delighted to welcome you again in the near future, perhaps when temperature is more attractive......best regards

We have just returned from a week at beautiful Vienna
and we are very disapointed.
Vienna is fantastic. But not this hotel.
Why?
1. Not the best welcome and behaviour from the staff at front desk. Especially the first night.
They wanted to pay them 700 Euro as an extra amount for guarantee plus our accommodation just because we choose to pay cash and not by credit card. We did not agree to pay that amount but only a smaller amount for guarantee as we have been charged by other hotels. They did not agree so we have paid them the full amount of 7 nights accommodation but not the guarantee so they immediately disconnect from our room the dvd - movies option and we have been asked NOT TO USE the mini bar or the spa or the restaurant unless all been pre-paid.
THIS WAS A HUMILIATION. WE FELT LIKE CRIMINALS.
We have stayed at Soho hotel in London 3 months before that and at 47 Hotel in Rome and nothing like that happened. They just asked only 100-200 Euro for guarantee and they did not hold any amount for accommodation, either.
2. TV was not working most of the days (complaints from other guests too.)
3. We asked them to bring us a kettle and they did not know what it is. When finally brought it was out of order.
4. Unusual smell from the pillow the first night. When we removed the pillow cover we found out a big brown stain!!!
5. Restaurant "at eight" is very expensive for this kind of menu.
They use herbal oils indeed, but are the herbals oils excracted from gold?

Avoid this hotel unless you want a standard and casual,
.....so casual, hotel, and if you are a type of person who are easily excited from a free nespresso machine in your room.

Please note that we have travelled a lot and this is the first time
we put our comments for a hotel.

P.S. They must change their slogan from:
" Vienna's casual luxury hotel" to
" Vienna's casual and only casual hotel"

Dear Sir,
I would like to thank you for your review and also apologize for any inconveniences caused. As per policy we always take a guarantee for extra costs and we never experience any difficulties here. Of course this might be different for other hotels. We did not disconnect you from the dvd-options but unfortunately faced a complete breakdown of all TV's in the complete hotel due to an external update on our software. I will of course look at your other critical points and again would like to apologize for the fact that your stay at our hotel was not as you expected. Best regards

Guests can choose between Casual-, Special, and X-ordinary rooms, as well as Cosmopolitan suites or the unique Ring Suite. The innovative illumination concept and the exquisitely made bathrooms complete the extensive feeling of living. The concept of warm brown and beige colors, refreshing pistachio and fiery red makes the hotel an amazing place. At the stylish hotelbar "Drings" by Le Zefire guests can expect the atmosphere of a French Club, great drinks, international music and cool people. On a regular basis live DJs will be contributing to the party feeling. The restaurant "at eight" is located on the ground floor and pampers the guests with outstanding international, toque winning seasonal aroma cuisine. Apart from the cuisine awarded with two toques, the innovative design concept impresses the guests. "Dressing up for the evening" - the restaurant at eight changes its clothes every afternoon and suits up to be the perfect evening restaurant for its guests. At The Ring Day Spa guests can shake off their stress from all-day life. The Spa, located on the 7th floor, offers an amazing view over the rooftops of Vienna. A fitness area with most modern training equipment and entertainment centre is available for the guests. Fresh fruit and water are on disposal for free.
