Stayed in the HI Hostel in Lillehammer for 4 nights earlier this month in a double/twin room with ensuite bathroom. The room was basic but clean and most importantly, well insulated and warm given that it was between -10 and -20 degrees outside most of the time we were there! The shower was excellent but tended to flood the bathroom! The self-catering kitchen could be much better equipped, and I think it would be difficult to get space to cook if the hostel was full as there were only two cookers, each with two hobs, but the pans available were very large so you could not fit two pans onto the one cooker together! This meant that only one party of people could use the cookers at the one time. This said, it was great having access to a kitchen as eating out is too expensive. If you like wine with your meal, it would be advisable to bring this from home as it is prohibitively expensive in Norway and only on sale at dedicated off-licence shops that are only open from about 10 am to 6pm. The buffet breakfast - served in the cafe in the train station- was very good and worth the money. I think the hostel reception staff could have been a bit more helpful eg. even though they knew we were going to the ski resorts, they did not tell us about the free bus pass we could get to use on the public bus, so we only found out about it after we had paid for the bus for two days. The double room plus breakfast cost about £50 per person. This was quite good value for Norway, I think! I asked for a quiet room, but our room was facing onto the railway platform and trains passed until quite late at night and then early in the morning. However, unless you are a light sleeper, they probably would not disturb most people as the window is well insulated.
