“Amazing Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 January 2011

We went for a long weekend in Jan- I didnt have much of a clue of the hotel but it is right in the centre of Tromso on the harbour, inbetween Rad and Clarion With. The service is impeccable, we were upgraded to a suite and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The hot tub and sauna are amazing, we really enjoyed lounging outside in the hot tub under the stars for hours- it was always empty too! The bed is so comfortable and the breakfast was really nice.
I could not recommend this place more, it seems to be the smallest hotel along the strip but definitely the best! Tromso is one of the most beautiful amazing destinations Ive been to- we love the cold! We got to see the northern lights twice! Amazing!

This hotel had the best bed I have ever slept in! Don't remember having slept so well anywhere else.
The room was clean and spacious, modern and comfortable. Breakfast was good and staff friendly. Location is very central (good!), but many rooms have absolutely no view, without the possibility to open the window.
Will come back to this hotel, maybe in a suite the next time.

We stayed at the hotel in October arriving on a Saturday and leaving on the Tuesday. Sadly Tromso seems to shut down on a Sunday so its really difficult to find an attraction. As we arrived on the Saturday afternoon we just went for a drink and a wander thinking we would go the visitors center the next day to book some trips. But This is closed on a Sunday so we had another wasted day.
We had wanted to go on a boat trip in the evening to try to see The Northern Lights and finally the guy on reception managed to find us a trip for that evening. He was very helpful, sadly we saw nothing and the trip cost 1200 Norwegian Kroner each.
My advise to anyone traveling to Tromso would be to go straight to The visitors centre.
The cable car is also a must, the views from the top are great.
The hotel itself is very nice. The staff were all helpful and the breakfast is great. The best part of all is the rooftop jacuzzi and sauna. This was the saving grace of the trip.

My 2 top tips:
1) Maximise your chances of seeing the Northern Lights by going between December and March. Locals told us there's simply to much rain (ie too cloudy) in October and November, although trips run from 1 October. We paid 650KR each and saw nothing during a 5 hour drive to the Finnish border and back - as did 9 others on our trip.
2) Make an early visit to the Tourist Information Office. Very helpful staff will check opening hours for you (not always as shown in guide books/ on web, and sometimes different times are shown at the locations themselves!)
Tromso has a 'small-town' feel and is very compact. You can see most things over a couple of days. If spending longer there are day trips on ferries, etc. I'd recommend a visit to the Arctic Cathedral (superb), Perspectives Gallery (very interesting photographic exhibition of the Roma people, currently, and Russian seamen working in Norway) and a trip on the Cable Car. We used the public swimming pool - a bit dated but clean, big and good value. Norway is expensive, of course. We had good meals at Steakers (busy steak house on the waterfront - book the day before), Egon (pub with meals) and a Greek/ Italian first floor restaurant near the Tourist Office. We walked everywhere (the centre is very compact) but there is a god bus service.
The Clarion Hotel Bryggen is well located on the waterfront with a super roof-top hot tub. There were a couple of times when it was full of young guests nut we managed to spend some time in there and in the top floor sauna - both are open to 11pm. The hotel rooms were good-sized and clean. The breakfast buffet was absolutely super - lots of Norwegian dishes plus the usual favourites, bacon and eggs, etc. It made our room rate (booked well in advance) look very good value indeed. Reception staff were helpful and knowledgeable. A good place to stay.

Booked this hotel based on reviews and price tradeoffs. The rooms were good standard. Breakfast was very good. The sauna and Jazuzzii had great views. Parking was convenient but pricey at 120 NOK/ day. We were able to get into the room slightly early. It was a nice stay.

Stayed 2 nights. The first impression as you see the hotel from the outside is good, but:
We arrived at 02:30 in the morning and the hotel parking was full. It has only room for 10 to 15 cars. And they charge 120 NOK for 24 hours. You have to come early every day, just to find an empty place to park. Beware, illegal parking near the hotel will cost you about 700 NOK.
The rooms are very old fashioned, probably they haven't done any serious renovation since a long time. If you are a couple be prepared to sleep alone. Even if you ask for king size bed, in fact there are 2 single beds next to each other. And the hilarious part, they don't have sheets and blankets for king size beds!!! Only single. This is everywhere in Norway.
The towels were very dirty.
Breakfast is ok with 2 exceptions: there is no one out to check the buffet and many times there is nothing to eat. And guess what? The waffle guy is gone!!!!

We stayed at the Clarion Hotel Bryggen as part of our honeymoon in Tromso. We had gone to Tromso in order to see the Northern Lights and were most certainly not disappointed! We went at Easter, which seems to be a time when the whole of Tromso shuts down! This was something we didn't realise when we booked, but it didn't stop us from having a fanatastic time, we just had to be a bit more planned about what we did on which days. The hotel is in a brilliant location on the harbouside and close to all the things you could need - shops, transport, museums, etc. As it was a special trip, we treated ourselves to a deluxe room with a balcony, and we are so glad that we did - it was really wonderful to be able to look out over the waterside and the mountains.

However the best thing about our trip was the roof-top hot tub - we couldn't get enough!! Luckily, the Easter weekend was very quiet, so much of the time we had it to ourselves and we would often emerge into the icy air totally wrinkly because we just didn't want to get out!! It was worth the extra money of staying at this hotel for the hot tub alone!

The breakfasts were really good - lots of choice and lovely smorgasbord style food - plus a waffle maker which sadly I only discovered on my last morning! The evening food was good too - although as with all Norweigan restaurants, you pay a lot for something that is pretty normal. But saying that, the food we had was very nice and you just have to stop comparing everything value-wise to UK prices - because otherwise you would never eat anything!

Our plan to see the Northern Lights was extremely successful, as we saw them on every night that we went out hunting for them - but you do need to be very patient!

We had planned to spend half our time at the Clarion, and half at another cheaper place in town to help keep the costs down (as Norway is outrageously expensive!), but we loved our deluxe room so much that we actually cut short our stay at the other hotel and booked our last night back at the Clarion as a grand finale to our trip!
