We had a superior room overlooking the harbour which was so nice! After a week of terrible weather, we finally had clear sky on our last night and guess what, we saw the aurora right in front of the hotel!

You shouldn’t expect a formal big hotel like those you find in big cities. It’s more like a boutique/ homely hotel. The hotel rooms were designed based on a cabin theme and it’s like you were on an old cruise. If you ever wonder why the hotel is called With which was the question we had when we found this hotel, With was the name of a captain who first opened the Norwegian Fjords for public use or something. It was a great stay, with breakfast and light supper included, and you could make waffles for tea, although I would prefer more varieties for breakfast as light chasers like us usually stayed for at least several nights and it would be nice to have something different every morning. Supper was kind of ready-made and re-heat but as it’s included in the rate, I can live with that. You can always go to the restaurants nearby. The hotel manager actually had some suggestions in the booklet in the room.

I would really like to mention the gentleman serving coffee in the morning. He’s definitely the most proactive staff of the hotel that I’ve met. Whenever he’s there, he’d go round the tables asking whether anyone want any more coffee, with big smile on his face. He really made my days. I would give him a prize if I was the hotel manager!

Room Tip: Book a superior room, you’ll get a bigger room and guaranteed habour view!

Hi DizzyMoss.

Thank you so much for the nice review of us and your stay.

I am really glad you got to experience the northern light in your stay with us. Weather have been very unstable lately, so good that it opened up and you got to enjoy the lights :)

I will pass on the very kind words to our kitchen manager Per Ivar which you are referring to. I am sure he will appreciate it, I do very much at least.

best regards

After doing research in tripadvisor and other forums, I decided to book here and send an email to the manager. I got immediate response and help in choosing the rooms. We got one harbor facing room for us and the opposite room for kids ( non harbor facing and cheaper - kids were too happy with the free wifi in room to bother about the view )
We reached late and had a rental car. They had already got us a parking spot outside the hotel for our 5 days stay. Greeted by very friendly reception staff who was also kind enough to have kept some food out for us that she heated and served.
Rooms are good ( could do with a wardrobe though !), well heated and clean. Toilets are good and so is the furniture. Nice large TV, tea coffee facilities are great.
Breakfast is good with a lot of choice. The menu is same every day so I would recommend rotating your choices. There is a nice 24 hours tea coffee machine there which can be a good welcome when you return at odd hours from northern light sighting trips. The amount of tea coffee we consumed would have cost us a huge packet elsewhere.
The afternoon free waffle is a big hit and sometimes the two machines have a queue of people, so maybe in peak season they can have more machines.
The light dinner in the evening is not so light and daily change of menu of hot food saves you a lot of money especially as we were a family of 4.
Gym, steam and sauna on the top floor is very nice and relaxing.
The river and bridge view from the rooms are good.
I would strongly recommend river facing rooms at the extra cost. Compared to the total cost of your trip this extra is nothing but the view changes the entire character of your holiday. The non river facing views are quite depressing.
Hotel management is highly efficient, friendly and professional.
As food is expensive in Tromso, it is actually a big saving staying here even though the hotel costs may look high on first glance.
All in all I dont think you can find a better place with this combination of hardware, service, view and cost

Room Tip: Harbor facing room on high floor. Dont even think otherwise

Dear Arun.

Thank you so much for the generous and extensive review. It was an honor to be hosting you during your visit after such a long travel. I was really pleased to hear that you got to see the northern lights, even thought you had to drive far to see it due to bad weather conditions in Tromsø at that time.

Thank you so much for the magnet. We appreciate it a lot.

Wish you and your family all the best and hope you return to us in Tromsø one time.

Best regards

We stayed for 1 week at this hotel and came back, totally relaxed. There was nothing to worry about at the hotel, the food was great, the room was superb and the staff was friendly.
The evening meal in particular was really something to look out to, every single evening that meal was really good. The one thing that coudl have been better was the deserts... these were somewhat dissapointing in comparison to the rest of the meal.
The room we had (409) Had a simply amazing view of the docks, the bridge, the ice cathedral on the other side of the water and the mountains behind that to complete the breathtaking view.

This was our first trip to Norway, and its purpose was to see the famous Northern Lights. There had been so much hype about their heightened activity last year and this year, we thought we better go see them before they faded again. We didn’t realise they would be so elusive!

We chose the Hotel With because of its quayside location and decided to book a superior room to really enjoy the view from the front of the hotel. We were delighted with our choice especially as we spent some time relaxing there looking out at the snow showers (which we hadn’t expected to be so frequent and extensive). The view was really good over the quay across the water with the landmark Arctic Cathedral prominent of the opposite shoreline.

The room was a good size and had two high backed and winged armchairs, strategically placed at the window. There was also a desk and chair, and a small fridge. The large double bed had two separate duvets. Room lighting was good with floor-stand and desk lamps, and good spotlights for reading on each side of the bed above the bedside tables. An electric radiator under the window supplemented the thermostatically controlled air heating. There was a plentiful array of power sockets in various locations around the room – great for the chargers for all the devices travellers have these days. The bathroom had a large walk-in shower, a good supply of towels, and toiletries that were replenished daily. The nice towelling bathrobes and slippers which were in our room on arrival were great for visiting the sauna and steam room facilities on the top floor.
The room also had an electric kettle and a supply of coffee, tea and milk. We never actually used them because lovely freshly made coffee and teas were available all the time downstairs in the breakfast room.

A large wall-mounted flat-screen TV in our room had mainly Norwegian channels but also had BBC News. Some of the movies shown on Norwegian TV are sub-titled in Norwegian rather than dubbed, and thus can be viewed in their original English language.

The free-of-charge Internet service was excellent with a good strong signal for both the local WiFi link and for the Internet connection. Typically I got at least 5mbps for both download and upload. Connection was easy. The hotel-supplied password was entered only once for the first connection of smartphone and laptop, and then reconnected automatically thereafter. The strong WiFi link was available throughout the hotel as well as in our room – very important for our constant checking of the weather and aurora forecasts!

There wasn’t a safe-deposit box in room, but that wasn’t a problem for us as this was a low-risk area in our opinion. In any event the hotel reception would store valuables if required. The only other negative about the room was the limited space for hanging clothes and the absence of any drawers for storing small items. I suppose an advantage of the latter is that we were less likely to forget to pack something when we were leaving because everything was in plain view!

The buffet breakfast from (7am until 10am) provided a good selection of hot and cold items, including fresh fruit, cereals, smoked salmon, cold meats, cheeses, different breads and delicious jams. Then in the evening, between about 6pm and 9pm, there is an evening buffet available for guests at no extra charge. We availed of it most evenings and found it perfectly adequate. There was a different hot soup each evening for starters, then a hot dish (which might run out and was not always be replenished), and similar cold items as are available at the breakfast buffet. And, as mentioned already, teas and coffees (including latte, cappuccino, etc) are always available there on tap. On the other hand, if you want a full choice menu, there are several restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the hotel.

On the morning we were leaving we needed to checkout at 6:15am for an early flight. As this was earlier that the breakfast, which officially starts at 7am, on request we were provided with a little snack bag to take with us. However as it turned out the efficient night staff actually had the breakfast buffet all prepared by 6am and we could have availed of it too. We enjoyed our little snack bag later while waiting at the airport.

The reception staff were very helpful with printing our flight boarding documents and with booking a taxi for the airport. The trip to the airport is very short going as it does through a tunnel from one side of the island to the other.

So although, due to a combination of low aurora activity and cloud cover, we didn’t see much of the elusive Northern Lights over our 5 nights staying in Tromso, we did enjoy our stay in the Clarion Collection Hotel With. If we ever get to travel to Tromso again, this would be our hotel of choice.

Hi AnseoAris

Thank you for the very generous and extensive review of us. We really appreciate it. March was a month with a lot of mixed weather and big showers of snow, after 2-3 months of perfect northern lights conditions. I am still glad you got to see some of it, and that you enjoyed your stay.

Maybe I can welcome you back another time? We hope so.

The hotel is beautifully situated right on the harbourfront. The front desk team were welcoming and happy to provide directions and tips to local landmarks and make restaurant reservations- nothing too much trouble and consistently great service regardless who was on duty. The room was small but comfortable with a perfect view over the harbor towards the Artic Church. It is a pricey stay, but then again so is the whole country! The waffle station available in the afternoon is a nice concept especially for those looking to get a quick snack before heading off on a northern lights tour.

Room Tip: Request a harbor view when booking and checking in- the view is really special

We were 12 people in a meeting room for two days, staying one night. The hotel is fairly run down, public areas on the ground floor especially.
Our meeting room was not prepared for us, there were candle holders on the meeting table, with burned out candles. The tables had not been wiped down. The fuses blew when we all connected our pcs.
My room was ok, but nothing special. I liked the hardwood floor and the view of the harbour. The hallway has somewhat old carpets. Nice bathroom.
This is marketed as a more expensive, boutique hotel, so my expectations were higher, and I was disappointed.

Hei klangbal.

Thank you for your review, and I will definately take your review on to my employees that day. It is not as it should be and I have also called in an electrician to have a look at the power outlet which malfunctioned. Please contact me next time you are in Tromsø, and I will make up for your disappointing first impression.

I wish you a lovely spring.

Excellent hotel, might be a it more expensive than other hotels but the evening buffet can save quite a bit on dinner costs. Food is excellent and plenty. Rooms are very comfortable and the beds are just excellent! For a little extra you can get a room with a harbour view which should be quite nice (we didn't take that). The other rooms look at the buildings next door. The hotel is a bit away from the main street which makes it very nice and quite.
