I wouldn't normally have seleceted a 2 star hotel but was guided by the reviews. This hotel is a gem. Best location in Tromso (on the harbour). Lovely cosy room. Excellent breakfast and evening buffet and waffles in afternoon. All included in price which is a big saving considering the cost of food and drink in Tromos. Complimentary tea and coffee all day. Walking distance from shops and tourist sites. Could not fault it.

I wasn't sure what to expect at this hotel - and had a very pleasant surprise, it was really good.

I had a single room which was quite spacious with superb harbour views over to Tromso Bridge, the Arctic Cathedral, the cable cars and mountains. The room was very clean with a mini bar, fridge, tv with English channels, trouser press. The only thing missing was a kettle but as hot and cold drinks are available from the dining room 24/7 that wasn't really a problem.

The bathroom (shower only) was clean and quite large, and the hairdryer supplied was a decent one, unlike most hotel hairdryers.

The dining room was quite large, overlooking the harbour and with an additional outside terrace which I imagine would be popular in summer. Good choice at breakfast - but was very busy on Sunday when breakfast time extends to 11am, so I would suggest going downstairs before 10.30am on Sundays. Nice touch in the afternoon when a waffle station is set up in the dining room for guests to make their own waffles. There isnt a restaurant evening menu to choose from, but a complementary evening buffet is available from 6pm with soup, salads and a hot dish. The buffet food is good quality and even as a vegetarian I enjoyed soup and a pasta salad on the one evening I was at the hotel. (I was out on trips the other evenings or I would definitely have eaten in again). As eating out is expensive locally, having the choice of eating at the hotel for no extra choice is a good option to have. A wide choice of hot and cold drinks, plus fresh fruit, are also available in the dining room 24/7. There are also vitamin C tablets available - I guess to ward off the effects of the Arctic winter!

Check in / out was easy with efficient and welcoming reception staff. The staff were also more than happy to answer any questions about the local area.

Free wifi is available for your laptop via a code from reception or there is a free internet pc available in the lobby. The hotel has various items of maritime history dotted about, giving an interesting touch. The slightly strange hotel name is also down to a maritime theme - being named after Norwegain sea captain Richard With who came up with the idea of starting a steam ship service to link northern and southern Norway which became the Hurtigruten service (so now you know!).

There is a sauna and steam room on the top floor but I didnt have time to visit so can't comment on it. There is also a secure storeroom where you can leave your luggage after checking out if you have a later flight.

The hotel location is excellent, overlooking the harbour and just a minutes walk to the main street and shops. The airport bus stops a couple of minutes away outside the Rica hotel.

I was very pleased with this hotel but I have to say I am puzzled by the apparent 2-star rating (although some other sites rate it higher). I would say this hotel is at least a 3+ star (perhaps the lack of a 'proper' evening restaurant is the reason?). I plan to return to Tromso next year and will definitely stay at the Clarion Collection With again.

Nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff at the Clarion. Any small request is met by an instant, positive response. They impressed us in so many ways, particularly Alf-Einar for his useful advice by email before our trip and for arranging a wheelchair for us to use for our entire stay to take out as well as use indoors.

We needed a double room and two singles, one for my elderly/disabled mother and were allocated three in a row on the fifth floor with magnificent views of the harbour. The single room was much more spacious and comfortable than the usual 'cupboard under the stairs'. My mother was upgraded to a double room which was specially adapted for her needs in the shower room. We all enjoyed the underfloor heating.

The buffet breakfast is fit for a king with a wide choice to please everyone, even some organic options. The evening buffet which is described as 'light' could easily become a three course meal with soup or salad to start, a hot option or cold meats/fish followed by cheese and biscuits or a tiny dessert which more than satisfied our appetites. We are all missing the lovely waffles in the afternoon, very naughty but so nice!

With biscuits on the reception desk, hot drinks on tap around the clock, iced water, fresh apples and vitamin pills there is little need for anything else during the day although they even offer to do a packed lunch for a small extra charge. So the top end price for rooms is more than justified. You really do get what you pay for and it represents excellent value.

It's not a luxurious hotel but the interior design is really interesting with doors opening out onto the corridors, like on board a ship, and all the rooms are named after vessels as well as having numbers. Lots of pictures and artefacts, I've read somewhere that it is like a maritime museum and that's quite true but light and fascinating not at all fusty.

Although the leisure facility is small, there is a spectacular view from the sauna. Free use of the internet using a scratch card system which was great.

The hotel is just off the main road on the harbour so is nicely tucked away and peaceful while being very convenient for the bus station, Hurtigruten, visiting attractions and just having a wander in the town. Nearly everywhere is easily manageable with a wheelchair, many flat, even heated pavements to keep off the frost, though kerbs are quite high.

Have really tried to think of something a bit negative to make this review sound more balanced but for the first time ever that is not possible. Our needs were met 110%.

Tromso itself and the surrounding islands are well worth a visit. We hired a car which gave use more flexibilty and was much less expensive than we feared. With studded tyres the icy roads are passable with care and in better condition than many at home.

Finding the car parking in the tunnel system is a bit of a challenge but a brilliant idea. It is also a quick way to the airport and good to get the car out of harms way off the icy roads..

Despite a steep flight of stairs at the top of the cable car we all made it to the top for the wonderful view on a crystal clear day. Another stunning day driving around the coast road of Kvaloya, out to Sommaroy and back through the mountains. We were incredibly lucky with the weather.

And the best bit? Has to be seeing the best view of the Northern Lights parked up in the mountains off the 862. A truly amazing and memorable sight, and you can't put a price on that.

We spent a week at the hotel whilst hunting for the Northern Lights. The room, 507, was smallish but perfectly adequate for our purposes. You get a TV, fridge/minibar, very comfortable beds, lovely view and an extremely good shower. A sauna and relaxing area is situated upstairs. The service was excellent but what makes this hotel stand out is the food that goes with it. You get a very good selection for breakfast, meats, cheese, breads, cereal, scrambled eggs, sausages every day. Waffles with yoghurt, cheese etc from 3pm and an evening buffet with soup and a hot dish. Although the daily rate was a little higher than I normally spend it's worth considering as other people were telling us that a 3 course meal for 2 was costing around £80-£100.
As to Tromso itself, we loved it. The cable car ride was great with marvellous views of the city. The trip to Sjkervoy and back on the Hurtigruten was good, although quite long. But what made the trip was the night out with a guide to see the Lights. We were lucky enough to see "one of the best displays in years" and it was amazing. We also walked most of the skiing trails along the top of the city and we did find a spot where you can see the lights, though not as well as out in the sticks.
All in all, a great trip in a very nice hotel.

Great location in the harbour. Staff was very helpful during our stay (we had lost our luggage). Nice rooms and great view, bathroom needs an upgade but we were told they do that next from November. Waffles in the afternoon was very good and we enjoyed the free evening meal on Friday too. Close to the Polarmuseum. We had a fantastic evening at Emmas only a short walk from the hotel. Nice town even if it was raining most of the time :-(

Do not expect a luxurious hotel, may be there is no such hotel in Tromso. The Clarion has a wonderful view (room 603 in my case as some other reviews recommended even though you have to use the stairs a bit as the lift only takes you to the 5th floor), a very useful staff, a wide range of DVD for you to view in your laptop for free, a wifi free internet connection if you are a member of their hotels brand (you can do it the first day you arrive and you get the connection for free) and what is very important in Norway (free breakfast, free wafels and juices from 3 to 6 pm and free cold buffet from 6 to 9 approximately. This makes your stay very confortable as you just go around, eat something, seat and relax, have a sauna and go back to drink or eat something which could cost a lot of norwegian crones in Tromso.

shabby room, even if we were upgraded to what they called minisuite, extremely dirty carpets everywhere, friendly and helpful staff, our daughter loved afternoon waffels and hot chocolate. we still don't know if what we found in the bathroom was a "complimentary showergel", or had been left by cleaning staff or other hotelguest.
