We went on Gunnar's tour on 28th Mar. Unfortunately the weather and aurora activity did not cooperate. However, full credit for Gunnar for trying. Of the four tour companies that I tried, Gunnar provided the best overall service. He prepared a nice fire in a forest clearing and served some very tasty food and drinks. The service that he provided made up for the lack of aurora activity. Thankfully we saw a terrific show a couple of nights earlier. Definitely plan on spending at least 4 nights out to maximize your chances. Also, take a DSLR; a point and shoot won't do justice to the lights. In California there are places where you can rent photographic equipment. I have a Canon 50D, but read on TA that a full-frame 5D with and f2.8 lens would be better. I am so glad I took that advice. The cost of renting the equipment was just a small fraction of the overall cost of the trip and it made a big difference to the quality of my photographs.

We participated in Guide Gunnar's tour on 18 March 2014. Although the Aurora was not as active as we'd hoped, we were happy with our experience at a couple of different locations over quite a period of time.Like other reviews, Gunnar is professional and does go out of his way to make sure everyone is looked after, including the supply of warm suits and boots, lighting a fire by the lake, providing a hot drink and some seriously delicious cake.
I managed to capture some photos from our night using my Sony Cybershot DSC 100 & tripod. Some of the manual camera settings I used ranged from M13" - M25", F 1.8 - 2.2 & ISO 400 - 800 in various combinations.
TIP 1
If your going to be the photographer on the night, familiarise yourself with your camera's settings, including the manual settings, like I did. Don't wait till the night and then expect Gunnar to show you how to operate your camera. This is your responsibility.
TIP 2
If you think your warm and rugged up enough & don't need the thermal suits Gunnar offers you, think again, especially if you feel the cold. Also put the suits and boots on before getting out of the bus. If you don't and after standing on the snow for sometime, you'll become cold and find it difficult to warm up.
On this tour what we met was a guy (Gunnar) who did everything within his power to host a great night for you and provide you with every opportunity to see the Aurora. At the end of the day seeing the Aurora Borealis is really the luck of the draw!
This review is about the service we received, which was top notch, and not the degree of light show we witnessed.
Thanks Gunnar.

We were out on a night of heavy snow storm. Gunnar drove us very far towards the Finnish border, but it just kept snowing all the way. After around 3-hour drive, we drove back as Gunnar told us that the weather was so bad that there might be avalanche, plus there was no aurora activity anyway. So it's another 3-hour drive back to the hotel and we didn't even get off the van for the whole tour! We did appreciate the long drive to try and catch a piece of clear sky. But with the weather and aurora forecast it seemed quite impossible to catch the light that night. It might be better to cancel the trip or at least give us an option for rescheduling in terms of safety and all.

The good thing about the tour was that Gunnar offered a more competitive price as compared to other companies. So if you are lucky with the weather and aurora activity, going with Gunnar does save you some cash.

Many Thanks Gunnar for a fantastic Northern Lights sight seeing tour.
From start to finish you showed professionalism.
Tour started off being picked up outside the Tromso Church situated on main high street.
Mini bus is very comfortable and spacious.
Your running commentary throughout the drive was great, very informative and sometimes funny.
Having reached the viewing point, approx. 2 hours drive North-West out of Tromso, we eventually arrived at a coastal point with a prominent hillside located behind. This helped alot to stop the biting wind eating into our bones.
Gunnar made sure that we were all kept warm, setting up a fire pit and collecting tree branches. The roaring fire was a God send.
Gunnar also made sure that we all had hot drinks and snacks. Making sure everyone was informed that more hot drinks were available near fire pit.
The Northern Lights - 10 out of 10. Gunnar gave the Lights a 9 out of 10. Saying that the only thing missing was Coronas. We did have a fantastic intense vivid green show of dancing, swirling clouds. Naked to the human eye, we didn't need a expensive 35mm camera.
Gunnar was fantastic on the night, constantly shouting out the camera settings for everyone to achieve maximum picture quality.
Forget you small compact cameras, they dont work. You need a 35mm digital camera to show the greens, reds, blues and yellows of the Lights.
Our trip/tour lasted approx 7 hours from start to finish. The Lights started approx. 21.20hrs and lasted until around 1am. Gunnar did say that if we were to stay and see the return of the Lights then the show would be even better.
So my question is this - Do you rent a car and spend the whole evening out?
Just make sure you've got plenty of hot fluids, blankets, petrol/diesel and well wrapped up.
Approx. Location - Asheim, road number - FV57.
Once agian, thanks Gunnar for great night. Cheers for Photographs even though I waited approx. 3 months. If your ever in Liverpool, drop us a line, I'll show you around.

For the second consecutive year I went with friends to northern Norway for an adventure holiday - part of which was with Guide Gunnar. He is such a funny guy that you are glad you are with him even if you don't see the lights! He is incredibly thoughtful of his guests' needs: he knew we had to walk down an icy bit of road to our accommodation so he went the day before and sprinkled gravel down it to make a safe track for us. This is 5 star service indeed. Our ice fishing yielded lunch out on a frozen lake which was fun and delicious. We did a northern lights chase and Gunnar also booked us for adventures with colleagues for husky sledding, snowmobiling and reindeer sledding and we had a lovely trip across Norway on the famed Bergen to Oslo train. It was a fabulous holiday once more.
