We recently had dinner at Afrika Oase. It was truly an oasis. Rose, the owner, brings African food and culture to the far, far north and her warmth and hospitality only enhance the great food experience. We ordered the goat skewers and the wild antelope (the antelope was offered at a reduced price), both served with homemade chutneys (a mixed berry chutney and a red onion and chill chutney), melon salad with cabbage and fried plantains. The food was excellent and we really enjoyed the unusual tastes. This was a fine-dining experience in the warmth of an open fireplace and Rose's welcoming personality. She will offer you a taste of every juice on the menu and there is a small but good selection of wine and beer to wash down the grilled meat. The prices are relative for Norway (about NOK400 per person for mains, one beer, one glass of wine and dessert) but very much within the range of any decent restaurant in the country. The restaurant is located in one of several historic customs buildings from the 18th Century, which only adds to the great ambiance inside the restaurant. Afrika Oase is an exotic restaurant in an already-exotic part of the world. Enjoy the experience!

So we were in Tromsø, trying to find an interesting place for a meal. We saw this restaurant on TripAdvisor and decided to give it a shot.

It's located right next to the Polar Museum (Polarmuseet). The place itself is quite original, with multiple pictures of a girafe in random scandinavian contexts, quite funny. I liked the way it's decorated.

The couple who own the place do pretty much everything, so if you're in a rush, this place might not be the best one, but if you got time, it's totally worth it.

As soon as we sat down, we were offered to taste multiple kind of exotic beverages that were all good, so we could order a full glass. I had the Reindeer meal. It was totally delicious. The lady told us it was cooked the way they cook antilope in Africa.

After diner, we had a long conversation with the owners, as they spoke French just like us. She explained how difficult it was to get all the ingredients to Tromsø. For the price they sell the meal, I think it's totally worth it.

Bring cash, however, because we couldn't pay with our international credit cards.

This african restaurant was a nice experience. We had the chance to speak in french with the lady (she comes from Rwanda) and had a really good dinner. Food was really good and they serve multiple type of juice. Prices are okay for Norway, specially if you keep in mind all the products used for the food that aren't so Norwegian! The restaurant is in a nice house and the general ambiance was good. Is it located next to the Polar Museum.

Note that international card aren't accepted.

We have visited the Afrika Oase in July and we had a great time. The host let us taste a few African juices and they were delicious. The food was also very good.
The kitchen is just a few meters away from the dining room and you can see everything is cooked like we were guests at their house.
The woman that runs the place was both waitress and chef for that night so it took a little longer than normal to get served, but it was certainly worth the wait!
