We stayed here for 3 nights at the start of February 2012. The hotel is located on top of a small hill from the high street in Tromso. To get here from the airport, there are several options - airport bus (60 NOK), local bus 40 or 42 (26 NOK) or a taxi (120 - 150 NOK). We took bus 42 to the high street and then changed to bus 40 which dropped us few metres from the hotel. The hill top location means you have higher chance of seeing northern lights. In fact, the first excellent northern lights viewing we had was right on hotel's doorstep.

The rooms are basic but sufficient and are cleaned daily. They are well heated and there is plenty of hot water in the shower. We stayed in #36 on the top floor and found it to be really good. There is also a small refrigerator in the room. The best thing about the hotel is the common room/lounge with self service kitchen. The lounge has free PC and printer that the guests can use 24 hours. There is also a wifi in the hotel which had good strength right to the top floor. The self service kitchen can be used by hotel guests to prepare simple meals. We only used the microwave to heat pre-prepared food but I can see the use of kitchen as eating out is very expensive in Tromso.

The hotel also provides great continental breakfast which we enjoyed every morning. In fact, on the last day we offered to buy some breakfast items for a packed lunch but the hotel owner encouraged us to just pack what we wanted. Very generous.

Finally, the hotel is the cheapest option in Tromso so unless you are looking for five star luxury at five star prices I 100% recommend AMI Hotel for all travellers to Tromso for a home like stay.

We can also recommend:

(1) Arctic Guide Service for Northern Lights chase. They leave from Rica Ishavshotel at 18.30 every day. They were great and we saw so much lights with them. Their northern lights chase last 7+ hours and is excellent value for money 850NOK per person.

(2) Round Trip by Bus and Hurtigruten ship. This trip can be booked at the Cominor office in downtown Tromso. The trip starts at 14.10 or 16.00 depending on which time you choose and take you to an island north of Tromso from where you board the Hurtigruten cruise ship back to Tromso. Good way of seeing the countryside and getting an arctic cruise experience. 600 NOK per person.

(3) Polaria Museum: We visited this museum on the last day in Tromso and found it to be very informative with excellent displays and amusing bearded seals.

(4) Ersfjordbotn: This place on the Kavloya island is about half an hour by bus 42 and then 425 from Tromso. It is a very scenic place to visit and don't miss the cafe on the pier at Ersfjord. It has to be the most popular cafe in the whole of arctic.

Enjoy Arctic Tromso.

I stayed at the AMI Hotel from 9th Jan to 17th Jan 2012 and had a great time here. The staff are so friendly and accommodating, it really feet like you were a part of a little family. The guests were great and the common room was always a place for meeting new and interesting people. The breakfast was simple, but fresh and loads of it - so having a little bit of everything they offered kept me going all day. Very central to the town and just a short walk down the 'stairs of death' and you were right in amongst it. Luckily the 'stairs of death' aren't the only way to get to and from the hotel. The second lounge room on the top floor is a great alternative to chill and the two free internet terminals (which includes printing) is a nice touch. The only negatives I have to report is that my little room on the top floor was right above the stairwell and with no lift and people coming home late the thud of them trudging up the stairs woke me up just about every night and the wifi is very unreliable especially on the higher floors, but on the ground level - no problems.

Tromso and Norway in general is damn expensive. So for a short weekend trip, the cheapest was what we wanted. The Ami Hotel is perfect for the job, close enough to all the main facilities of Tromso. Rooms are clean, and the entire property is comfortably warm. The bathroom is an all encompassed venture, with the shower, toilet and sink all separated by a curtain.. Has the feeling of a dorm facility, but most of the clientele are actually mid thirties+ couples.

Considering the prices in Tromso, this hotel is one of the few things that will not burn a hole in your pocket. We took the airport bus which dropped us around 10 minutes walk away from here. It was a little troublesome climbing the hill in front of hotel with all the luggage. However, later we realized that the hotel falls in the way of local bus that will drop you much closer to it. We came in late and were already given the code of the main door and the safe through email. We took the keys and checked ourselves in. Staff is available only for a few hours each day. Rest of the time, you can reach them through a phone if required. We found them to be extremely helpful & courteous, speaking perfect English and always willing to guide and help. Breakfast is sufficient and they pack the food for you to carry as well. Considering the prices of eating out, this is a fantastic option for those on a budget. The kitchen is sufficiently equipped and we also cooked ourselves a few times. They've kept a separate cupboard where guests leave the kitchen consumables which you can use; a really useful feature. Also on offer is a bicycle which you can use for moving around and a play station that can keep the kids occupied. The free wi-fi works well and offers good speed. We liked staying here and will absolutely recommend this place to anyone who wants no frills reasonably priced good accommodation in Tromso

If you're looking for clean, comfortable and good value accommodation in Tromso, look no further! The AMI Hotel is located in the town centre, a short (uphill) walk from the quayside, and main shopping areas. There are central bus stops located just a 2 minute walk from the hotel making it convenient for travelling to other areas of Tromso. The hotel itself is a combination of a B&B and a hostel, with handy facilities such as a kitchen, common area and commun use computer. The breakfast is of a good standard, although the supper buffet is limited, but provides enough for a snack if you're hungry! The rooms are clean and well equipped (flat screen tvs, wash basins, desk, refridgerator, hairdryer, wardrobe), and the shared bathroom and toilet are spotlessley clean and in pretty good condition. There are some minor wear and tear issues, but nothing that ovefrly detracts from the guest experience. I would definitely recommend this hotel as a solid budget option.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floors as the street noise may be slightly less up there.
