Just back from 3 days skiing / snowboarding at Tryvann Vinterpark, just outside Oslo. The Gaustad was one of the cheapest hotels I found for myself and 3 mates and served the purpose perfectly. Although the rooms are small, they are very comfortable with flat screen tv, fridge and couch. The shower was one of the nicest I've used, especially after a hard day on the slopes.
Breakfast was included in the price and all 4 of us certainly took advantage of the great buffet selection. We didn't go for the half board option but would certainly reccommend it to people on a tight budget like we were. Eating and drinking in the city centre of Oslo is far from cheap!
The tram to the city centre is literally outside the front door, 5 metres away. This makes it easy to get into the city centre or even to the bus station (as we had to get the bus back to Rygge Airport).
To get to the slopes of Tryvann, we walked for 5 minutes to the metro station, and were in Tryvann in 20 minutes. It meant we could save even more money by not having to rent lockers at the resort.
The staff at the Gaustad were very helpful, printing off timetables for us etc.
Yes, the hotel is part of the hospital and you will see many old and sick people in the restaurant, on the lift etc, but as a result, it is also a very quiet hotel with nobody running or shouting in the hallways waking you up earlier than you might have planned!
All in all, a great experience at the Gaustad.
