“Folketeateret - Magic in the air”
Reviewed 6 September 2013

This is my second stay in this hotel. Have stayed here for more than 30 days now. Excellent spread of BreakfastBuffet and evening meal. Their USP is the evening meal which I found unique and have not found it anywhere else in the world. Rooms are nice and fresh and the decor is very modern. Their soap dispensing system is quite unique. This I found is common in Europe where one soap serves all purpose unlike US where there is soap, shampoo, moisturiser, toothpaste in the hotel room. There were some problems with the AC in the room but who needs AC in the cold Norway weather :). Just open the window and you are done. Front desk staff are very good and will guide you in all resport. Special mention must be made of LARS with whom I have become friends.

Room Tip: Try the suites in the top floor if you can afford them :D Or otherwise Superior rooms are good enou...

Good points - serves the best breakfast ever and tea in the afternoon and a canteen style "dinner" are included in the price which is excellent value for money in comparison to other hotels in Norway. Comfortable bed, clean room and extremely helpful and pleasant staff.
Bad points rooms very small - less than 0.5m on either side and end of bed. Nowhere to empty suitcase of more than a day's clothes. No bottled water or minibar and high temperature with no air con. Very noisy nightclub next door and without earplugs impossible to get to sleep before 3am if you open the window to try and cool the room. It's not far from Central Station but a good map or directions would not go amiss especially since the name above the hotel is Folketeateret and not Clarion!

Room Tip: Ask for a room as far away as possible from the Night Club

Dear guest,

Thank you for giving us your review of your recent stay with us here on TripAdvisor. It really means a lot to us to hear from our guests. This is the best way for us to evolve and to know what we to good and what we can do better. We always look to what we can do better or different.
I am sorry you felt the rooms to be a bit small. But we have rooms in all categories from single-rooms to deluxe rooms and suites. So i hope we have something for every guests need.
And it is regrettable that you had problems with getting the right temperature in you room. If you contact me when you are thinking about a new trip to Oslo and need a place to stay, please let me know and I´ll make sure you get a nice upgraded room.

I hope to welcome you back.

Excellent. Clean rooms. Size is standard, but more than manageable for a few days. Staff very kind and helpful. Outstanding breakfast. The light dinner buffet is a very interesting option to save some money in the ridiculously expensive Oslo: the choice is a bit limited, but food quality is pretty decent.
There are, in my opinion, some negatives: lack of space in the room to hang some clothes, so even if you are staying for some days everything has to remain in the case.
Ventilation in the room is noisy, could be bothersome for light sleepers.
The shower glass wall is stilish but definitely undersized. The bathroom floor get's flooded every time someone takes a shower, a there's no way to avoid it.
Sadly, no bidet in the bathroom.
The bed is fitted with three couples of cushions, one is just decorative, one is so huge that is impossible to use it for sleeping, the third is quite good. The four cushions that are not used have to be stored over the luggage or on the floor, as they are useless and space-consuming.
Apart from these few cons, this hotel has proved to be a very good option to visit Oslo. The price is high but probably worth it. Recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room.

We chose this hotel based on TripAdvisor reviews and were not disappointed. In a very expensive city, this hotel offers a home away from home and excellent value. The English speaking staff there went out of their way to welcome us and help with any questions and requests. The room was clean and comfortable, with small couch, T.V. The only suggestion we would have is to have more storage, i.e., some shelves in the room and bathroom. Breakfasts offered a great variety of delicious food that could keep you going for most of the day. Breakfasts are buffet style in a restaurant setting, with many tables, and candle lighting. Much nicer than the average hotel breakfast. We were so busy we didn't have much time to take advantage of the afternoon tea/coffee, but did eat dinner there several times. Food is complimentary with your room price, but the wine is extra. There is a very convenient and comfortable lobby with a coffee station where you can make a fresh cup of coffee, latte etc. Any time. Fresh fruit is always available. There is also a computer for public use in the lobby. The atmosphere of this hotel is warm and welcoming. The location is very close to downtown, making it easy to walk Oslo centre. Taxis are expensive, but easy to obtain. Our concierge arranged for taxis, giving us a confirmation number. We walked out and were met almost immediately. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Oslo.

Everyone by now knows of the high cost of visiting Norway, $50 pizzas, etc. But this hotel makes it possible to live well on a something that approaches a budget level. Yes, the rooms are relatively expensive, but they are fairly new (I think they were done in 2009). More to the point, for the room cost you get a magnificent feast for breakfast and a lighter feast for supper. The breakfast spread includes everything you can imagine, and is located in what is a restaurant connected to the hotel on the ground floor. Four kinds of eggs - scrambled, hard-boiled, soft-boiled, fried, not to mention omlettes to order. Two kinds of salmon, a half-dozen cheeses, fruit, juices, etc. You get the point.

The evening supper usually consists of one hot dish, for example, poached Norwegian salmon and potatoes with gravy. In addition, there are cheeses and sausage and a wonderful Norwegian rye bread, and some other cold items. Wine or beer might cost another $15 or so, but that is optional. The meal is served on the seventh floor in the "Lounge," and that lounge expands up to an upper level covered deck with several tables, and an indoor area on that level as well. When we were there, this supper kingdom was presided over by a young woman by the name of Edom, whose energy and friendliness was infectious. She spoke not only very good English, but also Norwegian, Eritrean, Amharic and Arabic. She is a jewel, and if you get a chance, engage her in conversation when she's not in motion, and you will be impressed. She is an outstanding human asset to this hotel.

The rest of the staff, especially the front desk is also excellent. We had several opportunities to use their expertise, especially Erik Lars, and the experience was always good. Their knowledge of English was excellent, since we speak no Norwegian. We arrived about 11:00 AM, thinking we would have to park our baggage and wait until much later for our room. In fact, a room was found for us, on the third floor, overlooking the street in front of the hotel. Not a prime location, we thought, but as it turned out, it was excellent. The room was clean and modern. It was comfortable. The lack of drawer space was the only drawback. This building was built in the 1930's, and became the Oslo opera house in the 1950's until about 2004. The stairs reminded us a lot of the stairs at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City - wide and carpeted in red.

This hotel is a tremendous value in an expensive city, and I wouldn't hesitate in a moment to return to it.

Just returned from a 3-week Nordic trip. Having stayed in 7 different hotels (including design hotel) in 7 different cities (4 countries), I must say that Clarion Folketeateret serves the best breakfast! We simply loved the cheese spread, the different types of smoked salmon, the mini smoothies and many more... The hotel also serves afternoon tea & light meals in the evening. We stayed in the Standard Double room for 2 nights and are happy with the clean room and comfy bed. It is conveniently located near the Central Station and within walking distance to Karl Johans Gate. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone planning a visit to Oslo.

Great hotel - very close to central station and can walk everywhere! The breakfast was great with pancakes, hot choices and lovely fresh fruit. The evening meal made an expensive city good value. Unfortunately we never made it back for the afternoon tea but it sounded lovely. Amanda in reception is an asset to the hotel - she offered great service and made us feel at home. Room was clean and beds were very comfy. If travelling with just hand luggage do be aware there's just multi-purpose hair and body wash provided rather than little bottles of shampoo/conditioner but this is clearly better for the environment!
