We visited the Oslo Opera House in early October. It was fun to walk on the "iceberg"! The building has a fun design. We did not have tickets for a performance so we did not see the actual auditorium, but walked around the building on top for good views of Oslo. Walking around was free!

Most people think of Opera buildings as places to see great performances. Most people visiting the opera in Oslo will only enjoy walking all over the roof of the building taking in splendid views of the Oslofjord and the new, modern architecture in the area. Great place to visit at sunset, and in the summer you'll find people sunbathing all over the building.

It is very popular to go to the opera in Oslo. The special thing with the opera house in Oslo is that you are allowed to walk on it. It is free and you have a nice view over the city and the fjord. When the opera is open you can also visit the foyer.

I went here first to see the building, and secondly to see a ballet performance. Both exterior and interior are beautiful, although one can wonder about the fact that the stone used for the exterior was brought all the way from Italy while we have tons of rocks in Norway - well, the Opera House would probably have been grey then. And the sculpture in the water outside the Opera House: is it easy to see that this 4 million NOK sculpture is a half reclining woman?!

Oslo Opera House is one of the projects of the renamed Norwegian architect firm Snohetta. These are the guys behind other world iconic landmarks like Alexadria's Library in Egypt; Busan Opera House, South Korea; San Francisco MOMA and National September 11th Memorial Museum Pavilion, to mention some. It is a must during a visit in Oslo.
