+Nice staff
+Nice cozy loft up top with warm daily snacks
-Noisy
-Not much facilities (no gym/pool/spa/large meeting areas (aside from loft)

Rooms are all varied in size and dimension. Some large and some small. I got stuck with a smaller one, but its not that bad. Bathroom size was good. Nothing much remarkable to say about it

Great central location only a couple of minutes from the main street. I would have no complaints at all about the hotel.

I was lucky to have got one of the larger double rooms towards the back of the hotel - some of the rooms towards the front seem to be quite small. The bathroom was quite large as was the room in general.

Breakfast is continental style with sufficient amount of options but nothing lavish. The hotel also provides a light evening meal (soup and salads) included in the room rate on the fifth floor.

I found the staff to be helpful and polite although it is a little annoying that the restaurant and bar close on Sunday and Monday evening.

After reading earlier reviews I requested a quiet, large room not overlooking the courtyard - on arrival we were offered a small room overlooking the courtyard! I was assured by the hotel that the noisy courtyard situation no longer exists. But being already aware of my concerns they were also ready to show us two others facing the road. In each case there was a compromise - larger room or smaller bathroom. We chose the larger room, which had a miniscule bathroom, very comfortable for a 3 day stay, overlooking the road where trams occasionally rumble by but not really a disturbance.
Excellent breakfast. Also exceptional was the free buffet in the evening in the attractive loft - which meant that it wasn't always necessary to buy a (very expensive) restaurant meal.
Very good location, next door to the National Gallery.

Positives:
* Location - absolutely perfect to explore Oslo & its surroundings.
* Modern hotel.

Negatives:
* One of the receptionists didn't (want to) speak English.
* Receptionists look at their computers 24/7; they never say 'hi' or "how are you"; I hardly felt welcome.
* The cleaner opened my door and sneaked into the room even though I had made her aware twice that I was in the room.
* The bed (single room) is 80cm wide; too small for my taste.
* The shower (single room) is approx. 60x80cm. Not very easy to move.
* Also there's a shower gel dispenser in the cell, but it didn't work ...
* The towels were really small, and exchanged every day (no option to use it twice and "be green")
* Room wasn't 100% clean; the blinds were covered with dust of about 1 year ago.
* I fear some rooms face the main street with tram traffic.
* Pretty expensive mini-bar.

Neutral:
* No Cable TV (but lots of programs show films & TV series in the original languages anyway, i.e. mostly in English)

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 December 2006

Looking for a very central hotel in Oslo that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg, we chose the Clarion Collection Hotel Savoy, right off the main street (Karl Johans Gate) at Universitetsgate 15. The location couldn't have been better--8 minutes to the main transport system, airport express train, central shopping, etc.

Having read reviews about the small rooms, we asked at check-in for a larger room, and received one. It was very spacious, more than enough space for a couple with clean wooden floors, a desk, double bed, two lounge chairs, modern shower bathroom. Breakfast was wonderful, served in the hotel's gourmet Eik Restaurant. The bar is popular and friendly. Service very helpful and friendly.

The problem was the nighttime noise level. The hotel surrounds an open courtyard which during the summer apparently turns into a noisy beer garden so we felt safe booking during the winter, but no -- from 11 PM to 5 AM there were still garbage collections, the clearing of bar bottles (which by the sound were thrown into large metal bins to smash at all hours), people shouting to one another, etc. Will we return? Not sure. Definitely not in the summer when the windows will be open (there is no a/c) but maybe with earplugs in the winter, we'll give it another chance. Such a nice hotel otherwise, so if you're a young partyer yourself, this is a great hotel -- otherwise, think carefully.

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — The nighttime sound of smashing glass bottles.
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a larger-than-normal room; we saw some singles and they were very small.

we only paid £65 for the room and breakfast but it was barely worth that. Smallest room/bathroom I have ever stayed in plus the bar and restaurant were shut so no facilities at all.
They made the bed in the morning but the room wasnt cleaned and hadnt been cleaned from the last time someone stayed in it either.

We had a lot of trouble booking in Oslo because of the Nor Shipping Conference and their 100 years of independence celebrations. THis hotel worked out well with a reasonable price, by Scandinavian standards, and great location. High ceilings, bright modern rooms, good breakfast included. Tee only downfall was the noise from the court-yard as they closed the bar and set-up for breakfast...staff were hanging-out and moving garbage bins, which made for a couple of annoying early morning interuptions.
Gro on the front desk is great and very helpful.
