“Nice hotel - rude staff”
Reviewed 24 June 2009

The hotel is centered in the middle of the city center and is both clean and comfortable. However, the staff is rude and treats the customers poorly. My mother was going to stay one extra night after I left and as i was checking out the receptionist snatched her key from her hand. My mom said that she still needed her key and he answered in a sarcastic tone: "You didn't think you were going to bring it home, did you?" When my mom said that she had booked her room for one more night he just tossed the card over the counter at her and didn't even say sorry. The receptionist did never greet us warmly and we felt we were in the way. So the nice hotel got a bittersweet taste to it...

The Bondeheimen is a decent hotel. The bed's comfortable, the rooms well-appointed and modern, and the breakfast buffet is HUGE.

There is also a bus stop for the SAS airport bus immediately outside the hotel, allowing for easy exit by travelers. We left at 6AM and caught the bus without a problem.

That said, it's nothing you haven't seen elsewhere, and there are lots of little things that weren't perfect. First, despite the address being on 8 Rosenkrantz Gate, it's really on Kristian IV Gate; a renovation switched the entrances of a theater and the hotel. We only found this out by puzzling out the Norwegian-only passive-aggressive sign on the theater door; had we not noticed it, we would have been yet another set of travelers rolling our bags into a theater.

The shower didn't quite seal, so it leaked water all over the bathroom, even though it looked as if it were separately enclosed.

The hotel didn't have city passes, even though the front desk claimed to have them the day before. Generally, the front desk seemed under-staffed and not sufficiently knowledgeable; it took the receptionist over a minute to find out the weather.

Also, the phone didn't work. I'm not sure why.

These are all small things, and the free breakfast is great, not to mention the location within a ten minute walk to the palace, City Hall, and the ferries, but it's not an exceptional hotel; you'd do just as well at any other hotel in the area at the same price point.

Finding a good place to stay in central Oslo is not all that easy (I had tried before, and wasn't always happy). The BW Bondeheimen came recommended, and didn't disappoint. The rooms are relatively spacious, and have free internet access (ethernet-cable-based, thus no WiFi). Many hotels in central Oslo have the problem that they are close to nighclubs and bars, and thus noisy. I called a day before and asked for a room in the back, and got one facing an inner courtyard - recommendable. The breakfast buffet was generous, including smoked samon and other, less usual fare. One thing that dind't work well was hot water in the mornings. I was on the top (6th) floor, and with everyone showering at the same time the system couldn't cope. Thus good idea to shower in the evening. A nice feature is the heated floor in the bathroom, also unusual. Overall a good, central place, with very good breakfast - recommendable.

We stayed here for four nights. We selected it on the basis of other Trip Advisor reviews and weren't disappointed - though it's important to factor in the prodigious cost of everything in Norway. The hotel is a an easy walk from the central train and bus stations, and is ideally placed to access all the key Oslo sights and attractions. We had one of the upgrade rooms (a bit bigger apparently). We found the hotel to be scrupulously clean and the room serviced to a high standard. The double glazing could just about cope with the week-end revelry outside, and we had restful nights. As part of the hotel is a cafe that serves typical Norwegian food - it's here that you get your breakfast, which is self-serve, but ample and good quality. It was very busy, and it was a bit of a challenge to find somewhere to sit. The smell of the typical Norwegian food being cooked can sometimes pervade the hotel - though it didn't affect our room.

We enjoyed our stay in Oslo, and the Bondeheimen certainly added to the success of our stay. Finally, we'd advise you to check out the restaurants in advance - there isn't a 'restaurant quarter' in Oslo and it can be a bit hit or miss if you aren't well prepared. We weren't and it was indeed a bit hit or miss.

The Hotel is in a great location from which you can reach all relevant places to see in the city. The hotel room was also very comfortable clean and above all big. In the bathroom the shower and bathtub are separate so you can have a very nice japanese bath with a bit of creativity. The only objection was in the first night when the bathroom's drain smelled a little bit, but I guess that can happen in any hotel. I would definitely recommed it!

Most reviews of Oslo hotels are not exactly glowing. Therefore, I did not have high expectations for the hotel part of our stay. This hotel is located within easy walking distance of the train station (train runs from airport to Oslo) It is also located near plenty of restaurants and shops. It is easy walking distance to the dock also. We had a 4 person family room which was huge with a double bed, extra cot and pull out sofa bed. Our room was quiet and peaceful. It did get hot while we were there which made it a bit uncomfortable to be in the room. Breakfast was adequate for our needs. All in all, no real complaints. Being able to book a family room is a great feature. I would recommend this hotel for families visiting Oslo.
