“Great location! Use SOUTH exit from Central Station!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2010

This is a nice hotel in a great location! One caution - if you arrive by the Flytoget train from the airport or elsewhere, use the SOUTH exit from the Central Station. It is marked as the SOUTH exit. Someone here said to use the left exit, but Central Station has a couple of left exits which will leave you around the corner from the hotel. You can take the luggage carts from Central Station into the hotel and right to your room. If you are travelling in the summer, which is getting hotter even in Norway, beware that the rooms have very little cooled air circulation.

Clean, comfortable, quiet, up-to-date, attractive accommodations. Friendly, responsive staff. Excellent value in the summertime.Thoughtful amenities like a free shoe buffing machine and an ice machine on every floor. And a wonderful breakfast buffet. Convenient location, a two-minute walk from the central train station, "Oslo-S" (get the Flytoget express train -- 20 minutes from the Oslo airport -- senior citizen discount available), and an easy walk to the new opera house, one of THE sites to see in Oslo. Wished we had stayed longer, but we had planned Oslo only as a transition point between our visit to Svalbard (the Norwegian arctic) and a few days in Copenhagen. We highly recommend this hotel; it is MUCH better than the Continental, into which our tour company booked us on the outbound leg of our trip.

My partner and I stayed in Thon Hotel Opera for 3 nights over the weekend. Thon Hotel is located right next to Oslo central station which takes you to the airport. On arrival @ the station, we found that there were so many gypsies, drug addicts and very shady characters loitering around the station, which as a woman made me feel very uneasy. However, the hotel rooms were great! Very clean with updated furniture and room facility. There were also a gym and sauna which we utilised. Very friendly and helpful staff. The only downside was that it was quite expensive, however, Norway is an expensive country to live in.

I’ve just come back from a weekend trip to Oslo during which I stayed at the Thon Hotel Opera for two nights.

My selection of hotel was based on Tripadvisor rating, the being mentioned in New York Times article on travel to Oslo, the convenient location right next door to the main railway station, where the fast train connection between downtown and the main airport stops, and a good rate of two nights for the price of one (a total of about EUR 170).

I had a standard room on the 6th floor overlooking a narrow backstreet and a large office building. Fortunately it was weekend so I didn’t have to keep the curtains closed all the.

The room was clean but a bit worn out and a bit outdated. But as said, it was clean, which is the main starting point for me.

There was ample space in the bathroom and water pressure in the shower was great. My only disappointment came from the amenities, ie. they only offered shampoo and shower soap, and bar soap. There was no body lotion, which I have often found to have been included at hotels.

The breakfast was served on the 3rd floor in a large restaurant and it had views towards the Opera Building. The selection was pretty ample and I didn’t really miss anything from the selection. It was served during the weekends from 7am to 11 am, which I find excellent as I am early riser.

I only communicated with staff at check in and check out but found them friendly and efficient at those times.

Location of the hotel was great as I was arriving late on Friday and it was easy going across the street to the hotel from the train station. Also, the city being so small the central railway station was centrally located from pretty much everywhere I went so it was a good location from that point of view as well.

However, as always with central railway stations, they do seem to attract some “strange” folks, and so was it with Oslo as well. Thus I must admit that I did glance around in early morning and evening more carefully to keep an eye on the people who were nearby.

Should I travel to Oslo again, I think I might try to find another hotel. A bit more boutique style and a bit more in the center of the downtown area so that there would have been more restaurants nearby.

We were very pleasantly surprised with this hotel. We rode the train from the airport and it was just a one minute walk over to the hotel, the closest hotel to the train station. The hotel is directly across the street from the Opera House. The visitor information center is right nearby. Hotel rooms were much nicer than we expected. Check in was quick and the front desk adequately staffed for prompt service. Breakfast buffet was quite substantial with a view of the water and Opera House even if it is across an ugly street.

Only mix up is that they did not tell us that breakfast is at 7 a.m. on weekends and we had a morning flight.

We got a very good rate with Hotels.com and the Thon web site was not user friendly to English speaking people. We prepaid, but when I canceled a return stay at the Thon Opera Hotel, Hotels.com very promptly refunded our prepayment. (We have a very early flight when we come back to Oslo, so an airport hotel was more appropriate.) Also, we paid in US dollars in the US thereby avoiding that friendly surcharge from the credit card companies for using a credit card abroad.

I've stayed at the Opera at least 5 times now, it is by far the best located hotel in Oslo. Very close to the Oslo S train station, which you can get anywhere in Norway from there, and within walking distance to the gate, the royal residence, the harbor front, and sightseeing.

The rooms are small by US standards, but most in Europe are. The accomodations are very adequate though. The breakfast serves western breakfast (eggs & bacon) as well as the traditional Norwegian fare. The dinner is pricey, but very good, for those cold winter evenings when you don't want to walk!

The staff at the hotel speak english, and are very willing to accomodate any special requests. This is a very professional and well run establishment.

Efficient, pleasant and clean, in a word exellent. You cannot expect more than what you pay for and bearing this in mind that is tosay that you are not paying to stay in a luxury hotel i think that within the price range for the hotel it is extremely good value for money.
