“Fantastic Hotel”
Reviewed 3 August 2014 via mobile

Difficult to find any fault with this place. The location, whilst out of Oslo, was only a short 20-30min journey and well worth it for the views. The room was spacious, well laid out and decorated whilst the bathroom was very attractive. The bed was very comfortable and looked out down into the Oslo fjord. Excellent.

The whole building was very nice outside and in.

The breakfast is simply fantastic with a selection of fish, omelettes, breads, fruit and juices with a reasonable selection of gluten free alternatives. A selection of hot items was available, a range of coffees and leaf tea as well as bags.

If I must find fault then the pool was more of a child's play area than a place to relax and the room lacked storage space for clothes although was adequate for our week visit.

All in all, this was an excellent hotel, very comfortable stay and highly recommended.

Stayed July 2014, travelled as a couple

If you want to stay on the top of Oslo, just next to the Holmenkollen ski jump you get fresh air and a stunning view as a bonus. This is a traditional Norwegian place. The old part of the hotel with the restaurant "De fem stuer" is authentic and beautiful. We were taken care of very professionally in the reception. We appreciated the art on the walls and the atmosphere. Lovely breakfast.

Excellent hotel up in the hills close to Holmfenkollen skijump. The room was nice and clean, with a spotless bathroom. The breakfast was amazing, had to get up half an hour earlier than needed just to enjoy the fresh and tasty food. Nice place and staff . Would stay there again if I am going to Oslo again.

This historic hotel sits atop the hill of Holmenkollen, right next to the iconic ski jumping hill, with a magnificent view over the city of Oslo. These are all great perks, but this is also the best thing about this hotel.

The room I was in had a great view over the city, and held an acceptable standard. The only problem was an aging air condition system that was very noisy at high setting, and couldn't quite cope with one of the few really hot Norwegian summer days. That would be a minor problem for the other 350 days of the year.

The rest of the hotel consists of the original old sanatorium, with a restaurant, and a more modern addition. I'm guessing built in the 80s. I was never in the old part, but the addition gave a slightly worn and aged impression.

The food I had was very uneven. I was there for a conference, with two consecutive nights being served a three course meal for about a hundred persons. The hotel was unable to deliever consistent quality for either. The first was good except for rubbery overcooked scallops for a starter, and the second had main course meat so dry it was barely edible. The restaurant behind the lobby where we had our second meal was also extremely noisy when full, enough that normal conversation was difficult. All in all this was far from up to par.

The Scandic trademark specialty is good breakfast buffets. This one was decent, but not level with the best.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view towards the city. The rooms in the back have no view at all.

When I arrived I got an update to a dubble room, which was really nice. My room was in the renovated part. It was lovely! It could, however, have been cleaned a little better (e.g. I had to use the same glass for three days.)

The pool area was smaller than expected (after looking at the pictures on their home page). The area was beatiful, and great for relaxing. It was open to 10.30 every night, wich was great for me as I was working during the day.

The staff is very friendly and helpfull. I will definitely come back!

This was my second stay in Rica Holmenkollen. It's on the top of a hill, right by the famous ski jump center, with magnificent views over Oslo and the surrounding waters. There is a metro stop nearby but coming by car is a lot easier. The old building is a beautiful example of old Norwegian style and has beautiful details. The (recently renovated?) lobby area is nice too, and of our two rooms one was very nice and modern while the other one was a bit dated but nevertheless OK. Staff was helpful and competent.
But - the swimming pool and sauna had a lot to improve, the floor tiles were in major need of cleansing and the pool area was not tidied up after clients, so there were wet slippers etc everywhere.
The breakfast was OK and so was also the evening buffet for most part, although the warm choices were a disaster.

All in all, I think that for my next trip to Oslo I will select another hotel. Rica Holmenkollen has good offers these days but after relatively many disappointments I could rather pay (and get) a bit more for my stay.

We spent our first night at the Rica Hotel in downtown Oslo . The location is fantastic its right across the street from the rail road station. This is a big deal because a lot of us take the fast train from the airport. (200+ miles per hr) You probably don't want a car in Oslo, parking is very expensive along with the fact that they charge for bringing a car into Oslo. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. People talk about the Norwegian breakfast, well the breakfast at the Rica Hotel downtown is unbelievable. I wish I would have taken pictures of the FREE buffet. We has some of the most delicious salmon and locks you have ever tasted.

We stayed at the Rica at the airport on the way home, it was nice and the breakfast was great, but not close to the one downtown.

Room Tip: The hotel is a business hotel so during the week it is very expensive, but on the weekend great deal...
