We stayed here for three nights and found the hotel excellent. Our bedroom was in the annexe with a good sized bathroom and a view over the street one way and over gardens the other. It was clean, airy and a good size with a TV which had many European channels. The breakfast was very comprehensive with cold and hot buffet, plenty of different bread loaves, fruit and hot and cold drinks. The evening "snack" was a real bonus as it saved at least £25 per person per night eating out. While limited in choice, soup, extensive salad buffet with chicken wings or pasta or assorted sausages and bread galore with the chance to go back as often as one wished made it a real 'hit' for us. Shops are just a few minutes away and the local tram (12 or 19) took 5 mins to the city centre. A wonderful quiet area of Oslo with many interesting houses near by. When we required a taxi, reception rang for one and it came within 5 mins each time. While not in the noisy centre of Oslo we would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone.

We were skeptical at first, found a pretty good deal through 'Norway in a Nutshell' and all reviews pointed to an outdated hotel outside the city center. The first night we stayed we had a great modern room on the first floor in the back which was absolutely perfect since we needed to have a quick nap and nice shower. The bathroom was WOW and the room was oohhh, ahhh.

We then came back a couple of days later and had a room on the second floor. The room was comparable to 1st floor, but the bathroom was old, ugly, and dim. C'est la vie. The rate was a little cheaper.

The best thing about this hotel is it's location in the very quiet embassy district. The hotel is easy to walk to once you have your bearings- less than a mile from the train station. They had a really good breakfast and light evening meal, every assortment of coffee/espresso, tea, fruit flavored waters available around the clock. This hotel also stored our luggage as we went out on Norway in a Nutshell tour. They had everything we needed and we found it very comfortable. We'd stay here again.

The hotel has a great location if you don't want to be right in the middle of all the noise and crowded Oslo. It is located in a residential street and it is very convenient to take the local tram to downtown only 5 minutes away. You can also walk to downtonw in 15 to 20 minutes.

On the negative side, my bathroom had towels with lots of holes on them. They needed to be replaced months ago. They only gave me on bath towel and one hand towel each they. The bathroom was really small and cramped. The maids left the cleaning carts on the hallways the entire day. The buffet breakfast is Ok but nothing great. The dinner buffet at night is healthy but you get tired of it after two nights there. It is the same food everyday. It can not be that difficult to make some small changes and add some variety. Right?

The decor of the public areas is nice and the free internet access is a plus. I would suggest to add some nice reading material to their library though.

In general, the hotel is Ok, but with some changes and better management it could be a terrific place. Right now, it is just Ok.

The Gabelshus was our favorite hotel during our 10-day trip to Norway (6 hotels). The room was a little small, but compared well to others we encountered during our trip. The bathroom was small, but not the smallest we found during our trip.
It cost about 100 Kroner for a taxi ride from National Theatre station to the hotel. The hotel is a little further away (10-15 min walk) from central Oslo attractions than other hotels. It's a gentle uphill walk of 10-15 min to the downtown area. We just used the trams (number 13 or 19) which stopped a short walk downhill from the hotel. Be sure to check out the bakery near the tram stop for great sandwiches. There are also a few small grocery stores within 2 blocks.
Quality and selection at the breakfast buffet were the best we had in Norway. The nightly supper (salad bar and soup) was very tasty, and was enough for us (although we often went out for ice cream later in the evenings).
Staff were helpful and pleasant.
There is an outdoor patio and tables which provided a nice place for post card writing.
We plan to return here for our next trip to Oslo.

We book this hotel through the Norway in a Nutshell tour.
We were quite happy.
It is not in the very centre of Oslo, but quite easy to reach on foot (without luggage) or by tram. It is in a quiet nice quarter west of the centre and not far from the new area of the harbour (Aket brygge).
The room was quite good; only there are some fittings that are a little old, especially in the corridors, but also in the room and bathroom.
It is sufficiently clean and warm.
The most beautiful aspect of the hotel are the spa and the delicious breakfast.
Also the personnel is very nice and helpful.

Less is more in this hotel. The decor is subdued but stylish, the atmosphere quiet but tranquil, the rooms simple but comfortable. Breakfast is fantastic - multiple choices, good fresh quality food, abundant serve-yourself quantities. Coffee, waffles, cold drinks are freely available through the day, and there is a free light meal in the evening - buffet salads, sausage, spring roll type things - that wasn't so good, but, well, it's free. There is a small bar and good internet access (a terminal in the lounge and wireless in the rooms - ask at reception for the passwords which you get on a scratch card - follow the instructions on the card, not from the receptionist!).

I experienced two rooms in short succession, moving to get access to a bath tub. The first room was spacious, the second was tiny. The hotel is a converted large house so I guess that is the reason why. The conversion means that the hotel floors change levels quite a lot and there are lifts that operate by half floors at the major level changes. There is no obvious wheelchair access to the wonderful open air breakfast terrace. And there are smaller changes of level everywhere, with sloping connections, which together with the construction technique at doorways (there is commonly a block of wood across the doorway at floor level) would mean that getting about in a wheel chair would be hard work. Access to the hotel itself through the front door is up half a dozen steps in two flights with no wheel chair ramp that I could see (maybe round the back?) and this would make its wheelchair access problematic.

We stayed for 3 nights at this hotel. The neighborhood is very good. The hotel is in a quiet street, you feel that you are in the suburbs although it is 15 minutes walk from the center. The room was very comfortable an nicely decorated. The only minus was the extremely small bathroom. Breakfast was ok and the hotel offers a small dinner buffet without extra charge. A very good hotel with an average price for Oslo standards.
