I have recently spent a night at this hotel, and it was quite a pleasant stay. Unlike some earlier reviewers, I had NO problem of noise.

My room, #523, was small and rather plain with a slanting ceiling, being right under the roof, and with a skylight rather than a window. So there was no view, but there was no noise, either. It was spotlessly clean and functional, with a good (free) Wi-fi connection.

The breakfast, which was included in the room charge, was excellent. I am a seasoned traveller, sometimes staying at a five-star hotel, but I don't often come across a breakfast buffet where there is a plentiful supply of fresh, warm bread or a choice of leaf teas as well as teabags as at this hotel.

The reception staff, including Alejandra and Zeta already named on these pages, were pleasant and competent.

A word of warning for prospective travellers to Oslo. This is a very expensive city. I live in London, where the prices are quite high, but I was surprised how expensive things were in Oslo. So don't take a taxi from the airport. There is a frequent (every 10 minutes) train service from the airport to the city centre called Flytoget. Take it and get off at National Theatre station (one after Oslo Central Station). When you come out of the station, you will see the rear of a big brick building in front of you, which is the National Theatre. The street on the left of that building is Karl Johans Gate, Oslo's main street. The hotel is a few minutes walk from there. The train journey is about 20 minutes and costs 170 kroner one way. A taxi from the airport costs 700-800 kroner.

I do not hesitate to stay again at the Karl Johan Hotel next time I visit Oslo.

Nice hotel with good breakfast.
There were many local items served on the breakfast which made it more unique. Everything worked well in this beautiful hotel. Wifi was also fast on the hotel. good view to the park from the hotel.

I booked a hotel that seemed to have a history and that promised to offer comfort. While the hotel is nice and in an old building that has been renovated and located in a very central location in Oslo, this turned out to be the downfall of our stay. The room was facing the most lively street in Oslo it seems and even double-glazing did not make it less hard to fall and stay asleep.
The room was nice, the shower powerful and the breakfast buffet was a real treat {even a waffle-making facility was included and the vanilla joghurt was excellent !} but I did not sleep well for the 7 nights I stayed and that made the time in beautiful Oslo an exhausting and not a relaxing one.

Room Tip: Choose a room away from the busy street

The Karl Johan hotel is in the center of action for rail station, trams/buses, rental car and shopping areas. The breakfast is huge and extremely tasty. The best thing about the hotel is the staff, they are multilingual (several languages) and extremely helpful and good natured. The hotel is old and not elegant but it is a great value.

Room Tip: Some outside rooms on the street side can be noisy as a band plays on the roof of a hotel across the...

This hotel sits half way in between the central train station and the Palace, and across the street from the Parliament. So a good hotel if you wish to be close to the sights and shopping opportunities. It's not a fancy hotel, but quite comfortable. I got a spaceous single room, with a setee, a desk and chair, and a TV. Unfortunately, the wall-fixed TV could only be watched from the setee (which had a slash in its seat). The bathroom was very small, and an average person might struggle taking a shower - very claustrophobic! The hotel lies next to a TGI Friday's and O'Leary's pub, which does, in the summer especially, mean noices quite late. Though, with ear plugs I still got to sleep. There is also a Deli De Luca nearby, if one wants a snack. I didn't have breakfast at this hotel, so I can't say how it is. But if it is similar to other Best Western breakfast, it would include the things one normally finds on a hotel breakfast buffet.

Room Tip: Room 509 faces a side street to the Karl Johan street, still street noices are heard well.

When I first arrived I was on third floor with 'courtyard' view. The courtyard is noisy air-conditioning and other service area and the sound in my initial room was sure to give me a headache. Likewise rooms facing Karl Johan Gate will be noisy due to busy main street full of tourists below. I asked very nicely and said 'I don't mean to offend but may I please ask for a more quiet room' and the lovely Zeta at reception offered me a choice of two rooms on level 5. Much, much nicer. No where near as noisy but like a lot of hotels in Scandinavian cities I recommend ear plugs or better yet noise cancelling head phones for when you sleep. It is a good location of a hotel if you like being right in the centre of things. The staff are friendly and the breakfast is decent. Level 5 rooms are much much nicer than below.

Room Tip: Read my review above for tips on room choice. Just be extra nice to lovely staff and they should loo...
