“Great find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2012

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Bastion for 3 nights a few weeks ago. What a great find. We had been on a cruise and the hotel was about a 10 - 15 minute walk from the pier and is also a short walk to the train/bus/tram station. The hotel is conveniently located for most of the tourist sights. If fact, we could see part of the opera house from our window. There is a lot of construction going on all over Oslo and a lot across from the hotel but we never heard any noise. The room was a nice size with a comfortable bed and had a flat screen TV for those who can't live without the TV. It also had free WIFI. The bathroom was a bit small with a funky shower but was certainly adequate. The best was the full breakfast, afternoon pancakes, and full dinner buffet. In such an expensive city as Oslo, having those meals included was a real bonus. The front desk could not have been nicer or more helpful. In fact, all of the staff we met were very helpful and cheerful. We really were happy with our stay.

We stayed here again after 10 years and remain pleased with the value in an expensive city. Room excellent but breakfast room overcrowded and cramped. I would certainly stay here again but this part of Skippergata may not be everyone's cup of tea (my husband has led a sheltered life and was shocked at the drug addicts regularly 'shooting up' in the construction site opposite our window).

We arrived by bus and left by train, so this hotel was convenient for us. I booked it for that reason and also for the value (reasonable price plus breakfast and dinner included). Book well in advance for the best price. We arrived about noon and were checked in by a very friendly and helpful front desk clerk. Our room (703) was well equipped and very clean and well maintained. No bathtub, just a shower. There was free wifi in the room. The evening buffet was more than adequate and the breakfast was excellent, with both cold and hot food. Since we had to catch an early train, the fact that they have a cold breakfast available from 5 am was especially appreciated. Tea and coffee are continuously available and you can make pancakes after 3 in the afternoon, if you wish. Some previous reviewers complained about the construction across from the hotel, but all was quiet while we were there; it looks to be mostly finished. This part of town is in the process of being redeveloped, so there are some empty buildings around. While not in the center of town, it’s close enough, and you don’t get traffic or other noise. Only one minor complaint: the pillows are thin and lumpy. Tip: buy the Oslo pass if you’re visiting numerous sites. If you’re a senior (over 67) it’s an especially good value.

A short walk from the station, able to cover the city's major attractions on foot, friendly staff, clean & bright room and like what the staff said, you'll never go hungry while you stay in this hotel. Coffee, tea and fruits available at the lobby 24hr, good breakfast, pancakes from 3pm to 6pm and simple dinner buffet from 6pm to 9pm... Loved my stay at this hotel!

The location is good for the opera house, Aker Brygge, shops and restaurants etc but at the moment the road outside the hotel is up as there is a great deal of building work going on. The room was small but adequate. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast was very good, but the "light evening meal" was excellent! There was soup with croutons, breads etc, a choice of hot meals, wonderful salad bar and pudding and cheese and biscs!!

Good hotel, 5min walk from train station. Road works currently due to work on station etc.

Room and bed were good, as was wifi. Not much noise from road works and we had a large front facing room.

Breakfast and evening Buffett is great for saving money while in Oslo.

Airport buses go from the other clarion, so best to use the train from airport.

We had an amazing experience in the Clarion Collection Hotel Bastion: shocked by Oslo's (Norway's?) prices, we were relieved to find a hotel that was relatively reasonably priced to begin with, but extremely reasonbly priced when we experienced the hotel's wonderful service, clean rooms, delicious breakfast, pancakes and dinner, not just in comparison with the prices elsewhere.

I had to be in Oslo for business, and my husband and our at the time 16 month old daughter, spent lovely time in the warm hotel in every aspect (staff, atmosphere, temperature, even toys for children in one of the common rooms), while the weather outside was dark, cold and dreary (mid-December 2011).

Our daughter still cherishes the Mickey Mouse she was allowed to keep and it reminds us of the excellent service we experienced at the hotel. Recommended to anyone, for families, couples, business, friends and solo travellers - it is a home away from home, seriously!

And about some of the comments that the hotel is in a dodgy area: we didn't feel that one bit. Rather it is close to the railway station, close to the centre, close to the new opera, with a nice view of the harbour and on the right way out to the airport.
