Don't let the roadworks outside the hotel out you off. They will finish and don't spoil your stay at the hotel (even taxis and cars can reach the front door)
The 5-10 minute walk from the station takes you down Skippergata. A couple of blocks have some cafes where you may not want to join in but if you can always take the next street (Fred Olsengata) and come to the hotel.
Reception was helpful, friendly and even better upgraded us to a junior suite. That always starts a visit off well.
Room was very very large: sofa, chair, desk, old bookcase: very dark brown (as well as bed: with dual adjustable mattresses). Room windows looked into the interior lightwell so no view as as we were low down on 1st floor rather dark. Higher up will be brighter. Given the size of the room the lack of storage space was a surprise and a weakness. Hanging space was ok (with iron and iron board) but no draws or shelves.
Bathroom was clean, bright, well equipped. First class shower. Didn't use the jacuzzi bath.
Of course this being Oslo one of the USPs of the Bastion is the free (or rather inclusive) evening meal. Always enough in quantity. Quality varied from superb baked salmon to more mundane pasta with tomato. Salads, soups, fruit, bread etc so easy to make this the main meal in an unbelievably expensive city. Breakfast was as expected: usual range of warm food (bacon, eggs, baked beans) and bread cheese, fish and drinks. My pet hate is that the don't use individual yoghurt tubs but industrial jars. The dining room is small and can be cramped. Mid afternoon, if you return early, they provide a crepe/waffle mixture so you can make your own crepes on the hot plate. Jam on the side. A nice touch. There is free self service coffee/tea in the lobby throughout the day and evening.
Range of Norwegian newspapers. Financial Times the only foreign paper (hope that other guests do not take it from lobby area: most selfish).
Wi fi is free, as it should be. Reception and speed was adequate even though we were at the back of the hotel. The password changes daily so collect at reception. God range of channels on the TV from Al-Jazeera Arabic to BBCWorld, Scandanavian channels (with many English language films and programmes) and a few Viasport channels.
Didn't try the fitness room nor borrow any of the DVDs. another nice touch.
Overall a very friendly, comfortable hotel which made the stay in Oslo a pleasure.
