“Come here, sleep, get out.”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Reviews for Anker Hostel differ wildly on Trip Advisor and on HostelWorld. In my opinion, this hostel is good if you tip up in the evening, go straight to sleep, get out early, and try not to open your eyes much in the meantime.

The hostel is situated in a threatening and unpleasant district of Oslo - its location doesn't do justice to what can be a pretty city, if you explore it enough. Get a tram or a bus from the train station to the stop just outside the hostel; don't walk it. Roadwork was being done while I was there and this just added to the unsavoury edge of the district.

The hostel's lobby is a sociable place, with a large plasma television. I didn't spend much time there though, as it was very loud and boisterous. This is an unfriendly hostel, both in terms of staff and general atmosphere. On more than one occasion the staff were actively rude to me.

There are no lockers in the room, and the heat can get stifling if you leave the windows closed; open them, however, and you are treated to the wailing of sirens.

On the plus side, this hostel is very close to the main station. The rooms are large and spacious, and most (if not all) come with an ensuite shower and toilet. Most also come with a kitchenette, though as other reviewers have pointed out - no utensils. 'Anker Hostel' is pricey, but then so is everything else in Norway. This is the cheapest hostel in the centre of town - my advice would be to find a nice guesthouse out of the city and get public transport in. Nicer, cheaper, and you don't have to stay here.

I'd recommend this hostel to those only coming to Oslo for one night, or groups of four. If you're in such a group you could book out a room, hole up with your ensuite and kitchenette, and never have to talk to anyone else. Perfect.

Room Tip: Book a dorm with an ensuite; I dread to think what the state of the public facilities are here.

I stayed at Anker Hostel for two nights in an 8 bed dorm. It was easy to find although as a female solo traveller arriving in the evening, the walk from the train station felt a bit dodgy so I'd recommend trying to arrive during the day. The reception staff were friendly but the room was small and crowded. As well as 4 bunk beds there was a kitchenette, a table and one ensuite bathroom/toilet. Pots and pans etc can be borrowed from reception but it wasn't nice having people cooking, eating and sleeping all in the same room. The bathroom was tiny and impossible to get changed in which leaves a complete lack of privacy, not great when sharing with strangers. The only mirror was in the bathroom and no full length mirror at all. There weren't enough plug sockets for the number of people who had phones, laptops, cameras etc to charge overnight and there were no lockers in the room. Really basic things that make a big difference.

If I was unlucky enough to be in a mixed dorm I definitely would have left. It's not the worst place to stay, and it did feel safe, but I wouldn't recommend more than one night and I know I won't be returning.

Oslo is expensive, so we booked a double room here. We were giving a room with four bunk beds....but the only ones there, so we had LOTS of room. It is very basic in that there are not any dishes or cooking utensils in the kitchen. Not even a glass to have a drink of water !! Close to walk from the train station. Breakfast in the morning for a reasonable additional fee was in a restaurant 200 meters away.
I liked that the shower floor was heated.
I did not like that the stove fan had a sharp corner sticking out !!
FIFI World Cup was on so the TV room was CROWDED.

There was a small kitchenette in the room, but not a single pot or even kettle to cook with - pots (not kettles; we tried to borrow a kettle and were rudely told we couldn't) apparently could be borrowed at the lobby, but the staff were so unfriendly we did not bother. No central kitchen available except during certain months of the year.

Heating was terrible - the whole room for 6 people had only one small radiator, and it was not turned on the entire night, leaving us freezing. We tried to ask the staff how we could turn up the temperature, and were told that it was controlled centrally and so 'we cannot help you'.

Wifi can only be accessed in the lobby, which is crowded most of the time.

Was there a while ago with friends, and we were really glad to see that this one was a really nice hotel, at a really reasonable prices, considering that it's located just a few minutes from town! We couldn't be happier to have found this amazing good value hotel. The room were we stayed was really clean, big (we were three, one in each bed), nice views from a wide window (we could see a big part of the city). We couldn't complain at all about the breakfast included (fruit, bread, different cereals, juices, eggs, salads...). Finally the staff where very helpful and cheery. I wouldn't doubt to stay there again, if their prices stay the same...

Stayed for a night in an eight-bed dorm room but with only two guests. The room was clean and basic. Bring your own towel and linen if you don't want to pay extra. An affordable alternative for very pricey Oslo.

It was very nice and clean staying and also very cheap accomodation in Oslo It is good for young people who are travelling from one place to another and are looking for some place to overnight stay rather than some luxury hotel.
