Kristiansand--why would anyone go there? Well, the ferry terminal is one reason. In our case, the eight-in-the-morning departure meant a hotel close to the terminal, and one can't much closer than this hotel. It's not a great hotel by any means, but it's clean and comfortable. The beds were good. The restaurant serves an excellent breakfast, but would it be accommodating to open just a little earlier so that those rushing for the seven o'clock lineup could have time for a quick eat and run? They did have a stack of sandwiches wrapped in cellophane for the early risers. They could do better. Call me silly, but I still like there to be a tablecloth or at least a place mat on the table. Just saying. Precisely because of that, we got up from our dinner table and walked down the street to the Fiske Huset, a wonderfully scenic restaurant on the small-boat harbor. The halibut was wonderful, but the salmon ceviche was not. Actually, it made me sick.

I stayed at Rica Norge in February 2011. The hotel is small, and just off the main Markens pedestrian shopping street in the city sentrum. I missed the airport bus, so got a taxi from the Kristiansand Kjevic airport, which should have cost around 250 NOK, but the taxi driver took me to the wrong Rica hotel and then overpriced me for the correction. Taxis in the city know this as the "Norge Hotell Dronningens gate ", not as a Rica hotel.
Returning to the airport, I caught the Flybussen - which departs from straight across the road from the hotel approximately every 20 minutes
It is definitely a business hotel that caters to small conferences. Rooms are clean, comfortable and small - although I have certainly stayed in smaller in Norway. Breakfast and Wifi were complimentary. My one complaint is that they only appeared to have one iron and ironing board per floor - not in your room. There is a VERY small gym area on the top floor (2 machines and seperate sex saunas) along with a nice reading room lounge, and an outside rooftop balcony which would no doubt be popular in the summer.
The ground-floor restaurant had a pub style old wood look to it. The breakfast buffet was reasonable without being lavish. Staff on the reception desk were helpful. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and fast food within 5 minute walk or less out the door, and it is only a five minute walk to the main bus terminal.
I found this a perfectly reasonable central city hotel, without lots of frills, and would be happy to stay there again.

We arrived two hours late. The room was still not finished, but because of that they upgraded our room. The breakfast was poor, but ok. The location was exellent. A bit disappointed because you had to pay for parking inside the hotel. Nice view from the room.

Our room was spacious and had all the amenities necessary. Comfortable bed and free wi-fi. Breakfast was quite good and included.

NOTE: If you stay here during the weekends make sure you get a room facing the back yard. There's a noisy nightclub right across the street from the hotel.

The hotel is right in the centre of town but as low rise has no views. The rooms are a little tired compared to the Radisson but otherwise well appointed and a reasonable size. There is free (unsecured) wi-fi that worked well. The breakfast buffet was very good.

The service is a total joke. People that work there clearly could not care less about their jobs or making customers happy. They are completely unhelpful, seriously snoddy, and sometimes simply rude. But nothing you can do about it, though. It's a bid the Norwegian way. It's not that you could choose another hotel instead. They are all super-expensive and offer very little. If you have to go to Norway and Kristiansand in particular, you basically have to suck up that you won't get any value for a LOT of money. The best feature was the breakfast although even there, if you are used to US level of service, it feels a bid like a Youth Hostel self service station. The rooms are very small and, well, austere. For Euro 200/night my shower soap was empty when I checked in and wasn't replaced. There was no lotion or any other staples normal for hotels in that price range. My room faced the street and hence was very loud. Rooms facing the back are quieter but you look at exhaust pipes from the air conditioning and chimneys. So, just know what to expect. It's no luxury hotel and as long as you act that you are grateful for being allowed to stay in their pricey abode, you will be fine.

This is a good hotel, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay here. My room was upgraded some, due to single-rooms overbooking, so I got a room with a small double-bed, a good desk-area, and a good place to sit and relax. Air-conditioned hotel, so you don't have to have your window open. (On the side I stayed, there is some street-noise, which was not bothering me due to A/C.) Well-cleaned, spacious, good storing-place, minibar, and free internet-access in the room. The bed was marvellous, and the down duvet was great. The breakfast was really good, warm and cold food, great variety of breads, lots of fresh fruit, and you could also make your own waffles. Friendly staff.

  • Liked — Nice room, down duvet and bed, breakfast
  • Disliked — Nothing I can put my finger on.
