“Second visit”
Reviewed 15 July 2013

After having had a great stay last year, we returned this year. Again, the stay was very enjoyable, and generally the whole village holds a high standard with great entertainment value, even after having seen it all last year. I highly recommend the "Sjørøverfrokost"/pirate breakfast for great fun, lots of pirate stash to take home, trips with the pirate ships and entertainment by and up close contact with the pirate characters. I initially thought the price was high, but in retrospect I think that was money well spent.

Do be prepared to do some shopping for breakfast in your flat, because the mini-market is now even smaller than it used to be and wasn't very attractive to us. They didn't even have fresh bread, although they might have just been sold out. The restaurant in the reception building also has limited offers both for breakfast and at night. You need a car to get around to do your shopping, but it is not far to drive to the nearby "Sørlandssenteret", which has bakeries, "Vinmonopol" for wine, the well stocked supermarket Ultra and lots of other supermarkets, some of which have really long opening hours (early morning/late at night).

I do wish the wireless internet connection would be of better quality. It was next to useless, and I really would have needed it considering I was working after the kids were in bed. For visitors from abroad who have to pay roaming charges, this can be more than a minor nuisance and is really something to expect considering the price level and otherwise high standard.

As for the online booking process, I wish one would be able to easily see where the flat is located and on what floor when booking online, especially if one considers to opt for one of the known characters' houses. I did find the map online after I had booked, but one has to look around for it.

We stayed one night in Abra Havn combined with two days in Dyreparken.
We were 4 adults and one child and had a two bedrom apartment. We had what is, on the website, called "Treroms sjørøverkåk for 5 landkrabber" (two bedrooms for 5 people).
Small ktichen with a micro wave, table/kitchen ware, stove with two plates and a fridge. Sofa, table and two chairs and a good size bathroom. Comfortable beds and good sleeping quality. A small outdoor area with two chairs and a table if you want to relax outside in the evening.
There is a restaurant with a selection of food and drinks (also has wine and beer). You can also buy the food as take away if you wnat to eat in your apartment.
This is an exciting place for the children. In the afternoon and morning, the pirates comes on the priate ship(s) and makes a good show. Fun to watch.
The whole area are very well "made". You also get free parking, only 600m away from the park.
I've don't have anything negative to say, just two things that I miss.
1. Freezer in the refrigerator so that I could have brought with me ice packs and a cooler. Just a wish, not a necessity.
2. The beds were high and children can easily fall out. It would have been nice if the bed had a railing ("sengehest") to be sure to prevent this (of course, the top bed in the bunk bed had a railing).

I spent two nights here in the low season of the Kristiansand Dyrepark. Abra Havn is to designed as a pirate's village, and is themed to a level I haven't encountered before in Norway. We stayed in a 3-bed flat on the waterside. The bedroom has a family bunk bed, with a hammock as well. The living room has a sofa, LCD TV and table on wheels, a kitchenette with a microwave, hob, fridge and dishwasher. The bathroom has a toilet and shower.

For some strange reason, only the lower bunk is made up, and guests have to make up the top bunk themselves. Considering how high up it is, this can be tricky.

The accommodation also includes entertainment. The pirates raise and lower the flag, morning and night, also put on a small show in the evening.

The area doesn't have any playgrounds per se, but a slide in a big skull, and a ship children can climb all over. There is also an adventure trail for children.

Upon booking we were offered the option of a pirate's breakfast inside the park. It's quite pricy, so I wasn't sure if it would be worth it. It certainly is. In the summer, guests are collected on Kaptein Sabeltann's ship. In the low season, they are collected by bus by the pirates. A good buffet breakfast is served, the pirates perform and interact with the guests, and there was a freebie. A highlight was the appearance of Langemann, Kaptein Sabeltann's second-in-command, who interacted with every child at the meal.

As we travelled in late spring, we got a very good deal on our room and park tickets. It is very pricy in the summer.

I was at first terrified when I saw the price for two nights at Abra Havn. It looked very nice but still...I thought... But when there I almost forgot the price cause the whole place is fantastic. You notice the quality and the enthusiasm of the staff, specially the actors playing the pirates. They are so sweet, play and sing well! The breakfast is worth it's price because of the entertainment for the kids. Every little detail at Abra Havn is pirate-theme. The apartments are very nice and clean.

Anyway, it was May and the price was lower than the high season's rates. I really can't imagine there's many others than the Norwegians who could allow the high season prices at Abra Havn and for sure even many Norwegians can't. For the price there's no maid service during your stay, you have to take out the garbage, make up the upper bunk bed, take off linens in the end of your stay and empty the dishwasher after the former guests... Considering the high season prices are like those of the best 5star hotels it's strange... But apart from that - the place really is nice and me and my boys would really like to return!

Just perfect, everything was 100%. My kids loved it and so did I. Yes, it is expensive, but the experience and the whole package (from the "houses" to the shows) was just so worth it. We will definetly come back, maybe already this summer.

We've just returned from a three night stay at Abra Havn. Our four year old pirate has had the time of his life, and is already talking about going back.

The town is beautiful, with lots of details and small touches making it a proper pirate town. We spent hours exploring the streets, the alleys and the giant skull. A big plus for the treasure hunt/activity folder that the kids get when checking in, which really encourages exploration of the surroundings. All the staff, including housekeeping and maintenance, are were very friendly and are all dressed as pirates.

The morning and evening shows were also a great fun for the kids! Though seeing the exact same dialogue and gags three days in a row seemed a bit odd when the characters were supposed to be pirate inhabitants of Abra Havn going about their daily duties. Some small variations in the lines or gags from day to day would make the experience even better for guests staying multiple nights. The kids probably didn't mind this that much though :-)

Wi-Fi coverage in our house (01-01) could be better, our iPad only found a signal in about half the bedroom, and nowhere else.

Apart from these very small issues Abra Havn was a great experience, and we will surely be back!

First of, the "hotel town" is beautiful, and a kids paradise! And the apartments are really nice. But for that price (700 dollars) per night one would also expect 5 star treatment, but no, it is as always no chance of that with a incompentent manager and beyond bad "front desk" staff.

Here er the issues:
- Asked to buy tickets to the Zoo directly there, but "front desk" said it was not possible - later manager said it was no problem. Great, having to walk back and forth a looooong way
- The internet (WiFi) did not work our whole stay of 3 nights. And the manager refused any kick back on the price.. Really, no internet for 700 dollars a night??
- The general attitude in the front desk was bad - typical Norwegian 2 star attitude..
I was telling the manager that if the price was 150 dollars a night, I would not care, but for "top dollars", I have to say this is a rip off.. And Btw, the front desk staff is also the grocery shop staf, do they are never there. Was waiting 25 minutes (not kidding) when ready to check in. Oh yes, they had a small gathering for the staff at work in the back office (just social stuff).
They forgot to clean our apartment everyday, and thats just stupid (trying to save money?).

The apartments should have an oven, but are really nice as well as the stuff for kids are great,

For 150-200 dollars OK, for 700 dollars, are you kidding?! Will not return unless service is raised to a much higher level. But that's not going to happen with that Abra Havn manager (she was so rude and shouldn't be in the hospitality business).

Hei!
