Went for a drink with a friend in the Skybar. Sat at a table with empty drink glasses and bottles from the previous guests. They were not cleared away until half an hour later. Waiters were walking around the area, but no one came to take our order. So we headed to the bar.
I ordered a plain daiquiri. The bartender looks at me a little strangely, and ask - "you mean with strawberries?" I reply, "No, just a plain daiquiri cocktail. Rum, lime and sugar." He looks at me like I am just talking crazy. "You mean a margarita?". Me: "No. A daiquiri with rum." Again he looks like I am just talking gibberish. "Never mind, just give me gin tonic." Which I got.
We sit back down, and some time later someone clears the table and once we have finished our drink, then a waiter comes to take our order. Strange, since at this point the bar was noticeably busier.
I have no issue with a bartender not knowing how to make a drink and telling me so, or even looking up the recipe. But trying to make it sound like I have just invented a drink to confuse him is pretty bad. Also, it is not like a crazy exotic drink either.
Have stayed here twice, and very pleased with the standard - lovely beds with plenty of pillows, nice staff, and good eating/drinking facilities.
Our only problem, and this is a big problem as it ruined our sleep, was the fact that we could not open the window in our room. There was a warning on it saying that windows are only to be opened in emergencies, so we did not dare. Although we could not understand why, as they can only be opened an inch anyway, so no danger of falling out.
The result was a terrible nights sleep in dry airconditioned air, and horrible sore throats the next day (otherwise only experienced on long flights, where it cannot be avoided). Much to our dismay, as we left the hotel we saw from the outside that many windows were open! WHY do they have this warning on the windows then? Very unecessary, in our opinion.
My other complaint is that the selection of tea at breakfast did not include normal black tea - only horrible Earl Grey and various fruit teas. This hotel obviously does not cater for British visitors!
It is a short walk away from city center. But for a conferense you find all you get at the hotel. Do not miss the next door pool. It is big! And the rooftop bar has the greatest view.
The food in the resturant is among the best too
GOOD: convenient location if doing business around; good infrastructure for conferences and big events; nice views from the windows; breakfast offers an incredible variety of items that respect every imaginable dietary restriction;
BAD: some of the staff had poor English; laundry wasn't automatically delivered in the room (had to call and ask); room service has a US$ 12.50 (!) fee; has no gym/pool/spa; WiFi internet connection wasn't always reliable.
Not without trepidation (following bad experiences at the hands of the Rica hotels in Trondheim) a group of us spent the best part of a week at what turned out to be the excellent Clarion Congress.
The hotel was at 100% occupancy throughout (big trade show in town) yet the service level remained impressively 100%. Yes it’s a big congress type hotel and was not built for the quaint. However, the staff, restaurants and bars are all exemplary.
I’d never normally rate such a hotel, as they are usually just functional blocks! But here the staff team in particular makes sure your stay is welcoming and hassle free and I’ve just booked us another 60 room nights for our next visit in Trondheim without hesitation. Nice hotel, great people.
