We arrived oh so travel weary but front desk staff were patient and enthusiastic. It was a treat to get off the airport bus and simply walk round the corner and there was the red carpet waiting for us!

I was a bit concerned when I saw the 'quiet' room I'd requested was the closest to the restaurant and bar. Needn't have worried though as the building's sound-proofing is excellent and we barely knew the restaurant was buzzing at night (and it was!).

In the morning this is the breakfast area - and what a breakfast! The best pain au raisin in Norway, guaranteed (even the staff think so). As well as pastries, there's a great array of fresh fruit, cereals, yogurts and jams, along with salmon, cold meat, cheese, etc. Several items are labelled organic, including the home-made butter. Also wonderful for this inveterate tea-drinker to see a beautiful line up of Harney and Sons tea tins.

The bed was comfortable (the usual Norwegian thing of two singles pushed together), the duvet and pillows like clouds and the bathroom was first rate too (underfloor heating, yay). The high ceilings give a sense of spaciousness to the Bors, which forms part of the old Stock Exchange building in central Bergen. Really handy location for those who like to walk and sight-see.

A restaurant complex around the corner and in the same building is in the old Stock Exchange hall and is worth peeking into (or even eating there) to admire the original frescoes.

The Bergen Bors Hotel was our second stop in Norway. Converted from a former stock exchange and bank buildings, the property is architecturally interesting and within easy walking distance to the waterfront and Bryggen Warf area. Our room was a large, accessible, room with a large bathroom, and windows that tilted open for nice ventilation. The bed was comfortable, with the normal, Scandinavian-style, individual duvets (we quickly got accustomed to this). The hotel also provided a very nice breakfast spread, with various meats, eggs, fish, breads, and fruits, and maybe a choice of a cookie or two. There was an added bonus of a Nespresso machine in the room – win! Some things we found different about this hotel, the room doors swing out in to the hall, there is no peep hole, and you had to use your key to lock the door when you exit. Transportation wise, we walked to the hotel from the train station, and were close to the light rail stop, and the Flybussen stop. We really enjoyed our stay at this property, and would stay here again.

It’s a quirky building – actually several connected ones, where the same floor is at different levels. Excellent location right in the heart of town. My room had a closet and some shelves, though they could fit small chests of drawers on each side at the head of the bed, currently occupied by floor lamps. Not much light in spite of all the lamps, a need for brighter bulbs. This room faced the interior courtyard so no view, but also no street noise. Not many convenient electrical outlets for recharging devices. Good staff. In room safe and in-room coffee maker, but also a minibar, which I consider a negative. Soft bed. Excellent Internet. Bathroom had good water temperature and pressure. They have liquid soap, which I consider a negative. My stay had perfect weather, so I never used the HVAC.

A few steps off the Flybuss from the airport at the Fishmarket is the Bergen Bors Hotel. Inside a renovated central square historical building is a real gem. Convenient to everything Bergen a great place to start any adventure here. Didn’t get to try their restaurant BARE, but other guests raved. The breakfast was an incredible start.
