“Pleasantly pleased!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2013

We saw the menu in advance on the website and the choices sounded delectable. It was our 2nd night in Bergen & we already concluded that it would be hard for us to have dinner with a couple drinks for under US$100 in this town. So despite the prices on the menu, we couldn't resist. We had a little trouble finding the location because there is another Klostergaten 8 further along and we came from that direction. This same thing happened to us trying to find another restaurant. Must be a Bergen "thing". Anyway, we didn't reserve in advance on a Friday night late in August and we had no problem getting a table in the lower level. We ordered a halibut starter to share which was sublime. All the ingredients complimented the fish and we loved it. Our mains were both veal - one the "gourmet" and the other the "burger". The veal in the burger wasn't ground but seemed to be the same cut as the gourmet version and it was terrific...especially nice since it was 100 kroner cheaper at 169. With 2 glasses of Chianti our bill came to US$120, pricey by our standards, but we enjoyed everything at Spisekroken. And the service was very good, too. We left thinking we might have to return to try some of the other options.

“Worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2013

Small cozy restaurant located on the street heading out to Nordnes, so a little off the beaten track as far as tourists go but apparently not enough to put off the other diners, none of whom were Norwegian. Service was just right, as was the food. Quality of the food was comparable to the more expensive restaurants on Bryggen. Starters around nok120 and mains around nok270. House white wine was nok335 and very pleasant. Very good value by Norwegian standards. Menu also available in English. It is small so you are not far from the table next to you (have eaten twice upstairs, never downstairs) but that is the closest that we can come to criticism.

“Made us feel special”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2013

We celebrated a birthday at this wonderful restaurant. My sister made the reservations in the states and mentioned my low-sodium requirements in the comment section. Not only did the server and chef pay close attention to my meal, making wonderful substitutions, but they also paid great attention to the birthday celebration. We loved this place! Food was excellent, atmosphere is charming and service was gracious and friendly.

“A gem in Bergen”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2013

I booked this restaurant knowing that I would most likely propose to my girlfriend prior to dinner. The meals are at a fine dining level similar to what we are used to in Copenhagen, and although being a little more expensive, they represent true value for money in this crazily expensive country. The dishes are primarily Norwegian flavours (wild meats, fish) but are well presented and tasty - I got the Veal. The service was great, and the waitresses were able to explain the menu in English with no problems. The wine was reasonable, and believe it or not they had the cheapest pint of Calrsberg we saw the whole weekend in Norway (70NOK). The restaurant is in a genuine and non-tourist area on the hill overlooking Bergen's harbour. All in all, if you come to Bergen you must go to this restaurant!
