“At home in Bergen”
Reviewed 24 May 2012

Perfect bright rooms with heavenly beds, great "rain" shower, delicious breakfasts, great hospitality, all in a cute traditional wooden Bergen house..what more could you ask for! This has to be one of my most memorable hospitality experiences ever, and I've travelled quite a lot worldwide.

Sure, it's not a "cheap" B&B, but that's not what this place is meant to be at all. I took one look at the hotel rates in Bergen and decided that I'd rather stay here for a far more unique experience, and for less money than a typical hotel in the area.

Location is great, in a charming hilly residential neighbourhood right near Bryggen. If you're arriving with luggage and using the airport bus, be aware that you'll have to drag your stuff uphill for a short while to get there, which can be a pain. But really, it's well worth it just to stay in this beautiful neighbourhood and house.

Yvonne and Renate are friendly and intuitive hosts. Yvonne was on duty during my stay, and she took care of even the smallest details. She noticed which kind of tea I liked the most, and refilled my tea tray with even more bags of it. She also saw that I really liked the little chocolates on the tea tray, and replenished abundantly every day. Breakfast is served at any time you request, and the food is fresh and scrumptious. I enjoyed my experience of (pungent but very tasty) Norwegian brown cheese, made even better by Yvonne's tip to try it with a dab of jam like the locals do - yum!

I absolutely adore Bergen, rain and all, and will come back more than once for sure...and when I return, To Sostre will be my "home" of choice. Greetings from Australia!

Such a GREAT house. Greeted with a room upgrade. Great breakfast, amazing location, super friendly owners. As good as it gets. Thanks Yvonne for the amazing hospitality! U have inpired us to maybe open a b&b in Australia in the future.

Just a note, it's crazy how such a great website still allows reviews from people who actually never stayed at places they are reviewing. So i strongly advise readers to only trust ppl who had the experience. For future travellers: bed and breakfast is NOT a hotel... Don't show up if you r not being expected, u might find an empty house, a fully booked place or even disturb current guests.

To finish: be mindful and write fair reviews.

This spotlessly clean, cozy and friendly private guesthouse, run by two sisters (there's a clue in the name!) is well located behind the old part of Bergen, a short walk up cobbled streets from the bus stop. With typical Norwegian elegant simplicity, Yvonne and Renate have created a welcoming place to stay with a personal touch. The loft is a bit more spacious than the canopy room on the first floor, and has the added bonus of a small balcony: worth the extra kroner if you are staying more than one night although the stairs up to the loft mean it would not be suitable for those with limited mobility. A great start to a great trip around Norway. It is not cheap but given the overall cost of things in Norway was probably reasonably priced. Their tips on local restaurants and bars were spot on!

Room Tip: The loft is more spacious and has a small balcony but not suitable for those with limited mobility

We booked to Sostre on the basis of it's earlier TA recommendations and I have to say it really is as good as it's billing.
Our stay is based on two parts. Our flight into Bergen was delayed by 8hrs so we didn't land until 3am. We had been in touch with Yvonne during the afternoon and evening to share our misery of being stuck at Gatwick and without hesitation she was agreeable to receive us at what ever time it was that we arrived. Well that ended up being 4am and during our later texts in the middle of the night she still found the good grace to include a smiley face on her texts. So she was a fantastic host waiting up for us and then adjusting breakfast times to allow us some sleep.
The guest house itself is situated in a typical quiet residential street in the city centre, 5 mins walk from the Hanseatic buildings, funicular and waterfront. It is also a short walk from the last stop that the Airport Bus shuttle (flybussen) stops at. The guesthouse is a wooden building, typical of the houses in the area, full of charactor and charm. The interior is very simple and clean, with stripped floor boards, but the furnishings are very tasteful. I suppose the only problem there might be for the odd guest is that there is a steep set of stairs taking you up to the first floor. We had the Canopy room which comes with it's own shower room. The bed was sumptous and very comfortable. So we managed a few hours sleep before we had to get up. Breakfast was delicious, yoghurt, fruit, cheese, cold meats and scrambled eggs. Yvonne allowed us to stay in the room longer than she would normally allow before we moved on to catch our Hurtigruten boat.
Overall this is one of the best overnight stops we have had and this would be the only place we would want to stay if we were coming to Bergen again. So I would recommend to Sostre to everyone it really is delightful.

Room Tip: Canopy room has own shower room.

This was easily our most favourite b&b during our 2 week trip to Norway. It's set on a pretty cobbled street just a couple of minutes from Bryggen, the historic wharf which is a a world heritage site. The b&b itself was clean and beautifully decorated - our room was large, the bed very comfortable and soft (we just collapsed after our overnight train from Oslo!). There was a bathroom across the hall to share with a couple of other rooms, but as we were the only guests we had it to ourselves. We were also able to use the lounge and kitchen as we wanted, which was great.
Breakfast was by far the best in our experience - there was a wide variety of cereal, fresh berries, yoghurt, cold meats and fish. Yvonne, the owner is lovely: very helpful and friendly and also gave us a great recommendation for where to have dinner.
We would love to return when we come to Bergen again for a summertime visit!

This was my first experience of Norwegian hospitality and a pleasant experience it was too. Looking at previous comments there is indeed a small hill to get to the guesthouse but most people of average fitness should manage it without problem. Even if your fitness is poor a slow stroll up the hill is worth it as the guesthouse, in a wooden house, is in a very pretty, historic part of town.

The house itself is clean, warm and comfortable. We made ourselves at home in the living room, which has a TV, before and after our evenings out. Breakfast was lovely with a range of fish, cheese, ham and some scrambled egg. It certainly set us up for the day!

We have been in Bergen twice in a matter of months and stayed at To Sostre both times. Having met both Yvonne and Renate they are very helpful and pleasant innkeepers. The Canopy room is very comfortable and the area is quiet. The shower is good and everything is clean. The recommendations for dinner were spot on. Loved Jacobs and Kafe Speciale and Opera cafe (for lunch). I do agree that breakfast could be changed up a little but it is high quality and at a time of our choosing. The tariff is very reasonable for Bergen, and location makes walking everywhere possible. Our stay in this beautiful historic district with accommodating and friendly owners has been a pleasure. The ladies are always looking at ways to continually enhance the guest house experience.

Thank you so much for you kind words - and having guests come back to stay with us is the best compliment we can get.

Your comment about the beakfast is absolutely true, and since the last review commenting on it we have made quite a few changes to try and offer more variation, e.g. different fruit salads and a better selection of meats and fish. If you ever come back again you can tell us what you think!

Kind regards,
Yvonne
