“A comfortable hotel in the city of Bergen”
Reviewed 6 December 2011

I stayed in room 406 a spacious and comfortable and warm room, I did not figure out how to lower the temperature. You could hear some noise from the traffic in the "Jon Smørs gate". The bathroom was a little old fashioned but with a good pressure in the shower. The breakfast was excellent and so was the service. It was my first time at this hotel, but it is definately not the last.

The hotel is central, but the rooms are really old. The general feeling is to be in a place that needs a serious renovation to stay competitive

Used hotel as part of trip with Hertigruten.

Hotel was in a convenient position close to centre.

Arrived later than expected due to flight delay at around 8 pm. The receptionist was not very helpful but maybe the night shift I guess. Room was fairly modern but showed signs of wear and tear and some light bulbs needed replace. Room was of a very good size but view at front was spoilt by scaffolding as we were on top floor. Breakfast was very good with big choice.
Overall was just OK nothing more or less.

Booked as part of package cruise and seemed very expensive until we discovered just how expensive Norway is in general ($45 for a [very good] hamburger and Norwegian beer). Renovations are underway: furnishings updated and modern and bathroom was gorgeous with fabulous shower. Dining room yet to be updated but breakfast very generous with great selection hot and cold traditional Norwegian foods. Check in was very efficient and staff friendly and knowledgable. Two short blocks from central harbor.

So the hotel has some fancy art work in the foyer, but this does not make up for old room, that were stifflingly hot (no air con) and decrepid fittings.

The bathroom had cracked sink with cigarette stains, old musty carpets. This look was reflected in the dining room too.. Worn carpets, and scraped walls.

Location was good.. But this does not make up for the rest of it.

Bergen have a real shortage of hotels in summer, and I ended up here in desperation during a business trip. It’s horrible, probably last decorated in 1980. My room was manky, the room service machine was leaking water and I avoided sitting on the sofa's because they looked really dirty. It was this or a park bench… I might miss the bench! The only blessing is the friendly staff in the Pascal bar that I visited for a drink.

Room Tip: Try the Thon Bristol. It comes at better value for money than the usual pricy hotels in Bergen that...

We did not have much choice about staying in this hotel, as it came as part of a package we booked and paid for before we left home in Australia. After reading some of the reviews here, we were apprehensive...however, it's not as bad as we thought it might be! Our main complaint is that is not good value for money. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The "mini bar" turned out to be an expensive vending machine! We thought this was a bit mean.
The room was clean and we had a pleasant view of the (quiet) street in the Bryggen area. The bathroom was adequate, if a bit cramped. The slightly malodorous plastic shower curtain was not an attractive feature.
The beds were comfortable enough and we got a good night's sleep. Breakfast was good.
To sum up, this hotel is OK if you don't expect too much.
