“Just OK”

Two aspects of this hotel is just above OK: it's very centrally located and the breakfast is nice. Apart from that, I would not recommend staying in Rica Travel Hotel Bergen. The rooms are really small (cramped), and the furniture is dated. In addition, irrespective of whether you stay in a front side room or a room facing the small court yard it's rather noisy. In addition, important things like soap and toilette paper where missing in my room.

My partner and I stayed here for one night in April 2014 before travelling on the Hurtigruten ferry. We had booked a wheelchair-accessible room, which cost over $AUD300. This was easily the most expensive hotel room during our 5 week holiday in Scandinavia and Germany, and the poorest value.

Our room on level 2 was small, with no room next to the bed for wheelchair transfers. The bathroom was reasonably accessible. Drunk folk partying in the street woke us up around 2:30am, so we had a disturbed night's sleep.

The ground floor has effectively three levels, with ramp access to the elevator. This ramp is however too steep to be negotiated safely. Dining tables for breakfast are on the top level of the ground floor, which could only be accessed by another elevator. Unfortunately, the reception staff were less than helpful in explaining how we could get to breakfast, and we ended up wandering through kitchens before we found the second elevator. Breakfast buffet tables are on the middle level of the ground floor, which was inaccessible to wheelchair users. Breakfast food was quite good though.

On the day of our departure, we asked reception staff to hold our luggage. They handed us a key, without any explanation as to what to do with it. Eventually we extracted the information that we needed to take luggage downstairs to a storage room ourselves. The reception staff smiled smugly as though they thought we were stupid for not knowing what to do!

I have stayed in Rica and Scandic Hotels previously (Scandic has recently bought out Rica) and had really good experiences. This was not one of them. I would not stay here again.

The hotel is downtown and the rooms are noisy from traffic. As there is no air-conditioning, windows need to be left open at night when it's warm.

The restaurant -- Matglede -- puts on a nice breakfast. Lunch is ala carte. Dinner is non-existent as the restaurant is reserved for only serving groups in the evening. There is no bar.

I'll do my best to avoid staying here in the future.

We spent 2 nights in the Rica Hotel Bergen during Festspillene last week. We booked a superior room, but this showed to be not more than a standard room, and much less than we expected for the price we paid. Also we booked a double bed, but got 2 single beds. The room standard is OK, but not more than that. The hotel´s location is great in the middle of the city center, and the staff helpfull. Breakfast was good, but there were not enough tables for all the guests.
All in all not a hotel we´ll be visiting again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view, not looking at the courtyard

We spent 3 nights in the Rica Hotel Bergen. First we got a tiny room looking onto an ugly court, so became a little bit disappointed and asked for a better one. We already spent the second night in a much bigger and cozier room with large bathroom, bathtub and beautiful view. The staff handled our request quickly and professionally and finally we had a great time there. I have to add, that the beds were very comfortable in both rooms. And that breakfast...simply amazing. Three kinds of smoked salmon...very nice local specialities and delicious cookies as well...perfect. Nice place, recommended.

Room Tip: Get a room looking onto the street, if available.

Great location. Rooms were clean, beds were comfy on the small side but had everything required. Check in was pleasant and staff was helpful. Breakfast was incredible. Beautifully laid out buffet with any breakfast food you could want. I would definitely stay again.

When we first saw the room, we were crestfallen! The room was smaller than expected. View was non existent. Our room, which was on the inner side, faced a wing under renovation. All we saw was scaffolding and construction debris. Our children's room faced a wall!

Breakfast the first morning was chaotic. There was a big tour group and tables were limited, and food kept running out.

So why 4 stars? What made our stay pleasant were the wonderful staff! Even at very busy times they were very professional and always eager to help. It really made a difference, despite the shortcomings.

Breakfast as already mentioned by others was really good. Although we did not realise this on the first day, complimentary coffee and tea is available at the lobby all day long.

I would recommend this hotel. It's a convenient location and service is excellent!
