“Rare bargain find”
Reviewed 28 December 2011

This centrally-located hotel is a great bargain find in an otherwise expensive city. The hotel is stylish, clean, and feels as if you paid more than you did. The rooms are quite small, but offer everything that you might need, incl. a comfortable bed and a great shower (daily cleaning is however not included). It was possible to purchase a voucher to get breakfast at a hotel down the street, but we opted to just take coffee and a croissant at one of the many nearby cafes. Since Bergen is a quite small, and walk-friendly town, it is difficult not to be in a good location, but Basic Hotel is in a seemingly attractive part of town, with lots of restaurants, bars, and shops. Overall, a great bargain find that I would surely stay at again.

The hotel is newly renovated and has everything that I need for a hotel stay. Location is excellent! It is a short walk (10mins) to Bryggen, and almost everything else in Bergen (museum/train station). There are also some nice cafes and bread shop and supermarket just opposite the hotel. Room is not the biggest, but clean and bath room decent. Only down side is that it is next a pub and can get noisy at about 2am... Will definitely stay at this hotel again if I visit Bergen again.

Very nice boutiqe style, design hotel. Excellent location and good value.
The price was very cheap compare to other options and we where very impressed
with the standard. Daily cleaning is not included, but that was informed by check-in by a
very friendly receptionist and suited us allright. Breakfast is available at a nearby hotel, but we just jused the fridge in the room and bougth coffee ( only NOK 10 ) at the hotel. We hope to come back and will sure recomend this hotel.

we arrived late (around midnight) and we had sent them a msg before letting them know we were coming at that time so they had programmed our credit card with a 4-digit-number so that we could swap it outside to open the main door and then press the 4-digit number to get our key card with the room number written on it.
It was perfect. A bit noisy outside because Bergen is a students town but the room was ok, as well as the bathroom. Nothing fancy. No breakfast. Just what you need for an ok sleep.
The receptionist was very kind.
Thank u.

We stayed here in June 2011 for two nights while on a holiday in Norway.
The hotel was very neat and clean but the rooms were very small. There was a small fridge and a kettle in the room. They do not have a cafe or a restaurant but we were warned of this in advance so we were prepared. We reached there late in the night but before 11 pm so there was a lady at the reception to assist us.

It is OK for a short stay though not very good value for money.

Perfectly adequate hotel for a night or 2 in Bergen. A more affordable option in a very expensive city. Clean, if small, rooms. No cause for complaint, other than the fact that it is right above a street of nightclubs, which thumped til 4am whilst we were there.

After staying in this hotel for four nights, I have a very high opinion of it. The name is somewhat misleading because it's far from what I would call basic, but it's a good idea to be aware of what this hotel has to offer to avoid disappointment. They are very clear, for example, that there is no restaurant/breakfast (although you can buy breakfast from the Scandic next door if you wish), no daily cleaning (not being woken up by the noise of a vacuum suited us nicely!), no 24-hour reception and no mini-bar. The rooms are, however, very nicely furnished, spotlessly clean, en-suite, and equipped with free fast wifi, TV, a kettle and a fridge.

The hotel is within walking distance of most things as Bergen is a small city. It's on a street with several bars and clubs, but it's by no means a seedy area -- it seems that people in Bergen just like to party a lot! The hotel is above a bar which did play music until about 2am every night (3am on Saturday) so if you need peace and quiet to get to sleep before midnight, you may struggle. It didn't bother us because we weren't getting back to the room until about 3am anyway, and once the bar closed for the night everything became quiet very quickly and we weren't troubled by any other noise.

The hotel seems to have a modern approach to hospitality (eg, prioritising free wifi over more traditional services). This really suited us, but may not be so great for those looking for a more conventional set-up. If you're not bothered about breakfast or daily cleaning, then I doubt you'd find a nicer (or friendlier) hotel in Bergen in this price range.

(A tip on finding the hotel -- the entrance is quite small, but it's right next to a bar/club called Solo, which is impossible to miss. Head in that direction and you'll find it!)
