“Good place for a quick stay”
Reviewed 20 December 2012

I have been there for three days.
Bergen is a small city and you can reach anyplace walking.
The hotel is like 5-10 minutes from the train station and very near to the bus stop to the airport.
You can easily walk on the streets with the bags.
The Hotel is located on a street with some bars, but i was not disturbed by the noise. I ve asked for a quieter room and so i was booked in a room on th 5th floor facing backwards. However the elevator only goes to the 4th floor, and i had to take the stairs with the bags.
I could not tell any moment that there was a party going on.
The place is small, but very well decorated.
The bathroom is clean and very good.
There is a frigo, but no devices for cooking as it is a hotel.
There is good internet connection.
I felt safe and the staff is very nice.

Upon walking in the door, we were both pleasantly surprised and excited about our stay. It was well priced, looked very nice, and had all the amenities we required for our two night stay. Unfortunately, our excitement faded quickly. Here are the two main things that turned this hotel from an excellent experience to a poor one.

1. Dirty floors - The floors of the room were filthy. They had not been vacuumed/cleaned before our arrival. Aside from the floors, the room was clean.

2. Cigarette smoke - Even with all the windows closed, the smell of cigarette smoke was overpowering in the room. The smell wasn't constant, but would come in regularly.

As other reviewers have noted, the noise from the bar downstairs was very loud. We had an odd numbered room on the front of the hotel, so the bar was directly beneath our room.

Due to our late arrival, short stay, and sightseeing during the day, we were not able to communicate our issues with the staff of the hotel. They were not at the desk when we left for the day and were gone before we returned. Inside the hotel was very quiet; we never heard another guest.

This hotel has so much potential. The location is wonderful. It's an easy walk to all the sights, the restaurants nearby are good (and affordable). One of the airport buses stops within feet of the entrance (FlybussBergen).

If they can ensure clean floors and locate (and stop) the cigarette smoke smell, it would be much better.

Room Tip: Request an even numbered room.

As my husband has stated this hotel is getting very mixed reviews.

The hotel's location is good for access to all parts of Bergen by foot and it only takes about 15 minutes (slow walker) to reach all parts off the main city. The Hotel is basic but for a crash pad it's more than adequate. The rooms are comfortable, and have TVs, a minifridge, a kettle (but no milk, or tea bags/coffee so bring your own), heated floor in the bathroom which is a wet room, bedside cabinets and lamps. The beds are a little soft but comfortable esp for a one or two night stay (i have bad back so 8 days was a little much)
The only thing some people might not like is that cleaning only happens every 4 days, the staff never go into your other than that though. you can pay extra for everyday cleaning but we did not think it necessary and managed perfectly well with the 4 day routine.
The hotel is also very near a host of bakeries and bars all within easy walking distance and provided excellent breakfast, snacks etc.

The only shame about this hotel is its neighbours; two bars right next door. The front of the Hotel is only one doorway wide, and underneath the remainder of the hotel are two bars. These bars open about 6pm and stay open (apart from Sunday) until 2am-3am every day. they both compete for the loudest music and there are continually people milling around outside, smoking, shouting to each other across the road, coming and going. Having spent the first night being disturbed by this(we had a room 4 floors directly above the bars) and getting no sleep we spoke to the receptionist who apologised profusely and offered us another room on the 5th floor on the other side of the hotel. however, I think this is only because we were visiting off season and there were plenty of spare rooms; in the summer this would not be the case and any chance of moving rooms would be minimal i think. so, Any rooms with odd numbers mean you will be on the bar side of the hotel, even numbered rooms are on the back side. the higher up you go the better BUT you can still hear the thud of the base in the music. if you value your sleep or a are a really light sleeper, i would advise; go somewhere else.
as we understand it, the bars were not there when the hotel opened but have since had permission for their bars. whilst the hotel owners are in discussion with them, they are running a business which demands loud music whilst the hotel is a place for people to sleep; the hotel comes off worse at the moment as there is no agreement as to what is "reasonable volume".

this is a great hotel, and i cannot understand how the council allowed two bars to open right underneath it. however, if you are young and out til all hours then this is a great hotel for you.

I would have given the hotel a higher rating if it were not for the noise issue from the adjacent bars.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the top floor (there is no lift from 4th floor to 5th so not disabled accessible...

This hotel is getting very mixed reviews. I hope my review helps to clarify a few items for potential customers.

The Hotel is on the edge of a student area of Bergen, which in itself is not a problem. The hotel's location is good for access to all parts of Bergen by foot. There are some great restaurants nearby and the harbour front is around 10 minutes walk. The Flybussen stops just 20 metres down the road. All in all, then the location of the hotel is great.

The hotel is, as its name suggests, basic. This does not mean that the rooms are basic, but there are no communal areas, there is no bar, restaurant or indeed much of a foyer. The rooms are comfortable, and reasonably well provisioned. There is a TV, minifridge, kettle, heated floor in the bathroom (great!), bedside cabinets and lamps. The beds are a little soft for my liking but again no real difference from many other hotel beds. The cleaning regime is a little odd - it's the only hotel I've been in where they only clean the room every 4 days, but it's not a problem....after all how often do you clean your bedroom??? If you want additional cleaning just ask in reception they are happy to oblige. Reception is another slightly wierd area - there is nobody around from early evening to mid-morning.

So far, from me no real complaints. The hotel itself was perfectly comfortable for our 8 night stay, and food and drinks were readily available in the multitude of bakeries, bars and restaurants in and around the area.

Ok, so what's the problem? The problem is the neighbours. The front of the Hotel is literally just one doorway wide, the remainder of the frontage is taken by two bars, which stay open until the small hours (2AM whilst we were there, but not on Sunday). The hotels rooms are above these two bars, and these two bars both pump out loud music and have nosiy clientelle who like hanging around outside to smoke. Speaking to the guys in reception, they are fully aware of the situation, and are trying to work something out with the bars. I understand from talking to them that when the hotel opened these two bars were just empty units - they are "in discussion" with their neighbours regarding the problem, but bars are businesses in their own right and obviously have conflicting ideas about when it is reasonable to stop playing loud music.

We were lucky enough to be staying off-season and the hotel had relatively few guests. Initially we were allocated room 403 on the 4th floor, street facing...we did not get a good night's sleep and requested a quieter room if one was avaiable. The staff were very apologetic and moved us to the 5th floor on the side away from the street (room 502). This was about as far away from the two bars as you could get, but even here on a couple of nights we were woken by the music.

So, in summary this could be a great hotel if the bars can work out a way to keep the noise down. If you are a party animal and stay out most nights to the wee small hours then the noise issue may not bother you. My advice would be to ask when booking, for a room on the side away from the street (even numbers) on the highest floors.

I would have given the hotel a higher rating if it were not for the noise issue from the adjacent bars.

Room Tip: Ask for an even numbered room on the upper floors....should be the quieter rooms.

Very impressed with Basic Hotel Bergen, and I will definitely be staying here again. The room was very spacious, bigger than many of the other Bergen city centre hotels which cost more money. Clean room, lovely modern decor, comfy bed, and clean toilet/shower etc.

Staff were excellent on the desk, helpful an smiling.

Only reason I have not given this 5 out of 5 is due to the noise from the street at night when the bars we closing, around 3am. Although this didn't last too long, and I was staying right in the heart of the city centre on a Saturday night, pretty much the same in every city!

From now on I will definitely be using Basic Hotel Bergen for my stays in Bergen, fantastic place.

Bergen basic hotel has a great central location and nice team management when they are available (usually not during the night).
You need to take in account that the hotel room does not include cleaning except one a week (we did not pay attention when we booked) and that any additional item has a cost.
Just for your information not more.
Other than that we really enjoy the basic stay.
Its not a romantic hotel though :)

We really like the Basic Hotel. It was not basic at all; the whole hotel was professionally and artfully decorated, and our room was spacious and comfortable. The colors in our room were muted and relaxing, the lobby was tastefully decorated in purples, and the lady at the front desk was friendly. We easily walked all over town from the Basic Hotel. There were several bars within two blocks, but we did not notice any noise at night. We stayed in early July, and enjoyed walking around well past midnight and returning to the Basic Hotel at night. We wished we stayed more than one night.
