“A good option for young travelers!”
Reviewed 8 July 2014 via mobile

The Bergen Bed and Breakfast is adjacent to the Bergen Apartments, and offers 3 bedrooms with 2 shared bathrooms. The decor is nice but simple (think Ikea).

The arrival to the hotel is up a quaint cobblestone (somewhat steep) alleyway. The exterior of the B&B is charming, and the location is steps from shopping, dining, and the UNESCO waterfront.

At the time of booking, you are provided a code to access the building (there is no reception). When we arrived later than expected, we had no issue entering the B&B. There is a full bathroom in the entry way, and then a kitchen and dining area on the ground floor.

A winding and very narrow staircase leads you up to the first floor and second full bath. I can imagine the climb would be more strenuous with large amounts of luggage or any mobility issues. We took a peak into Room 1, and the room is clean, light, and fairly spacious (I wish we had booked this one!)

The winding staircase then continues up to the second floor with Rooms 2 and 3 (no bath on this level). The rooms have a double or queen bed, with enough room to lay out luggage. The ceilings are a little lower on this level, so it did feel more tight. The rooms had basic but clean decor.

There are basic amenities at the B&B. There is breakfast (however we opted to eat elsewhere) and coffee/juices available at all times. There are no toiletries provided (i.e., shampoo or body soap) - so be sure to pack these yourself!

The primary reason that I rated this a 3 star rather than 4 is based on the inconvenience of our room location (second floor) and the challenges getting there (narrow staircase) and accessibility of facilities. Every time that we needed to use the restroom, take a shower, brush our teeth, etc., we either had to go downstairs to the first floor or ground floor (which we ended up using more regularly when there was a guest in Room 1). It became a production to pack up all the toiletries, towels, clothes, etc. every time we took a shower or had to use the restroom - and trek down 1-2 floors.

The B&B is in a fantastic location though and for a young traveler, it is probably the best value for money you can get. However, if you are looking for a private romantic getaway or have mobility difficulties, this would not be my first recommendation.

My suggestion to the staff at the B&B - consider turning Room 2 or 3 into a bathroom so that each room has a designated bathroom on their floor - I would be willing to pay much more for that convenience!

Small hotel with 3 rooms in a little house, located in a lovely narrow street in the heart of Bergen. Just few minutes walking from the central fish-market. There is a kitchen area with a big dining table at the ground floor. The kitchen has all the necessary appliances to prepare your own food and eat it there. This is clearly an advantage and saves you some (a lot of) money, especially, because there is a supermarket with great opening times right across the street where you can buy anything. The breakfast is served (only in-season) from 8:00 - 9:30 AM. It's very good with a lot of choices.

The rooms are in the upper floors and you need to walk very tiny stairs to get there.
The rooms are also very tiny, almost for dwarfs. But this aspect added a bit to the unique, warm and romantic atmosphere I have had while staying there. Although there are two shared bathrooms, they were very clean and nice. I definitely recommend this hotel, considering the value.

After a 10 minute walk from the train station we found the very steep laneway the bed and breakfast is on. Comfortable room. Shared bathroom was very tidy. Self serve breakfast. The kitchen was available to use throughout the day. Great idea as eating out is expensive.

Pros:
Central location, about a 5 minute walk to the wharf.
Comfortable albeit tight and small rooms.
Good value for money, in an expensive country.
Cons:
This place isn't your typical bed and breakfast, not by UK standards at least. We stayed 2 nights here and although no specific problems, I wanted to highlight that this place is a hostel more so than a bed and breakfast. We met the owner once during the stay, friendly guy not your usual -bed and breakfast interested in your stay -owner.
We didn't mind this so much but might concern you?

Although we stayed at the end of April, there was limited breakfast available, some juices, coffee and muesli - expected a little more, but oh well.
PS: Be ready to climb a spiral and tight staircase to your room!

Room Tip: Room 1 is on the first floor and much bigger in size.

My friend and I stayed in the self-catered apartment for the weekend, which was great. We made breakfast in each morning using the appliances available and dinner when we decided not to eat out and try and keep costs down. It was a very quiet area, and a comfy bed, with a good shower, which is always an uncertainty when staying in a hotel! Would definitely recommend and go back if I stayed in Bergen again!

The cost in Norway is quite expensive, especially in this beautiful seaside city Bergen. So we chose this B&B based on its quite good reviews and mid range price. (More than we paid for a decent hotel in Oslo which also provides amazing breakfast.) It was a bit weird that we never met the owner during our stay. Everything seemed quite remote but under the control. The whole experience was quite unusual, with shared bathroom, absent owner, video camera, code for the front door etc. Also because it was in the low season, no breakfast was served. Only some cereals, milk and juice. Not complaining since it was all stated in the welcome e-mail. However, it still left us a bit disappointed comparing with the B&B we stayed in the UK. It’s all a bit distant and too cool to dwell.

We arrived a little early. Fortunately the Owner? Was on site and said we could have our room straight away , offered to help us carry our luggage from the car and advice were we could park for free.
Our room was accessed via a very narrow spiral staircase . This B&B in my view is not suitable for people who may have difficulty going up stairs. Fortunately I am fit as a fiddle and had no such problems.
The room was very clean, excellently decorated with brilliant TV . No road noise on our visit . The bed was very comfortable . We had to share the Loo with the people upstairs so had to put on trousers so as not to upset neighbours .
Very centrally located and we popped in and out of this delightful B&B all day long.
No breakfast was available on our visit as it was low season. This was advised.
For the price we paid it was an excellent stay.

Room Tip: Room1 a was a delight
