“Deceptively Represented and Worst Value For Money”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2011

There are several Scandic hotels in Bergen. We stayed in 2 of them. The Scandic Strand Hotel was absolutely awful. The website shows clean, and relatively modern simple rooms that were recently renovated. THESE ARE NOT THE ROOMS YOU GET!!! The average price of the rooms is around $250-$300/night. The lobby of the hotel seems nice enough and was recently renovated, however, by the time you make it up to the corridor of the rooms, the stench of an old and tired hotel hits you. When we opened the door of the room, we were truly shocked. The window of the room was left open, because they clearly knew how awful it smelled. The room was obviously a smokers room, despite the fact we had requested the opposite. The bathroom had a dirty shower curtain with just a drain in the floor - no shower tray. The smell in the room was so awful, that we had to sleep with the windows completely open, and even then were not able to sleep because of the smell. The only positive thing I have to say is that when we complained to the staff, they gave us the room for free because the hotel was fully booked. It turns out that although the hotel gives the impression that it has been renovated, it is only the lobby and restaurant of the hotel, and the top floor which has family-size rooms. Beware of mis-representation of hotel rooms in Norway in general. Hotels often give the impression the rooms are one thing, and by the time you arrive, you find out you are paying an arm and leg for something that is COMPLETELY different than what you though you were getting.

Room Tip: Only the top floor of this hotel has been renovated and they are for families.

This hotel is suitable for short stay city break. It was comfortable and clean but a little basic. Small restaurant area but food was good. Small lounge area but bar was in one of the other annexes of the hotel. Secure left luggage room which was useful.

Stayed two nights on a cosmos tour. Did not start out too well. Turned out we were to be in the hotel across the road. Had to cross back for breakfast. Glad it was not raining or too cold.
Nice hotel room but the curtains did not meet to block out the late setting, early rising sun.

Pleasant enough I suppose, but rooms a little basic. Restaurant good but very expensive (even for Norway) . Free WiFi.

The hotel is ok but in need of a refurbishment and better cleaning staff. I got a "superior" room high up on the 7th floor with great views and a balcony which was nice. But two light bulbs were broken in the room, the heating was turned up to max and made the room very musty. One of my towels was dirty and I saw black hairs around the rim of the bathtub. The breakfast is uninspired, I've seen much better at places in the same price range.

The location is good, especially as I was spending my time at the university. But, I'll probably try another hotel in Bergen next time.

They've given many rooms a much needed makeover, but forgotten details like the walls, which are still quite worn down. And the hallways is not renovated and looks quite bad in places. In one of the buildings the elevator is from 1984 it says and seems like nothing at all has been done with it since then. The reception in this building is also really worn and looks like it should be in a old bar instead.
The buildings reception is a lot better though.
There is no roomservice, but free Internet access
Online they say they cooperate with a gym next door, that also has a swimming pool. You can get free tickets for the gym, but it turns out you wont have access to the pool.

The location of hotel is rather far from the central station.

The hotel is separated in 3 blocks of building. The reception and restaurant and hotel rooms are in different building. It is a bit annoying during rainy day.

The room is old and the sound insulation is bad. We can heard clearly voice from the street for example someone was drunk and scouting on the street at around 3am. Besides, we also can heard clearly voice from next door.

The toilet is too close to the sink. It is not comfortable for defecation. Again, a piece of glass between the bathtub and sink is useless. After you finished your shower the floor is wet.

The facility in the room is simple, no hair dryer, no safety box, no kettle for boiling water to make coffee or tea. It was rather disappointed when we compared with the hotel we stayed in Oslo.

The breakfast provided by hotel is good. Many choices for their customers.
