“The old building feels very old and bathroom is dangerous”
Reviewed 4 September 2011

After reading other reviews and staying here for 5 nights, I think that one's experience depends entirely on whether or not you stay in the old building or the new building. We stayed in the Old building and it felt very old and in need of refurbishing. Many tour groups stayed here for a night or two so it is my guess that groups are put in the old building.

To start with the positive:

--People who worked there were pleasant and helpful (like everyone else I met in Norway)
--Clean...though housekeeping took our dirty bathroom glass the first morning and never replaced it
--Location was convenient walk from Radisson Flybussen stop, train station, Bryggen, etc.
--Breakfast buffet was large with great selection and never ran out of food (though if you went back to get something like a drink refill your plate might be cleared by the help)
----Coffee and tea making items in room (no decaf)
----Good, free wifi

On the Negative Side:

----Rooms were last redecorated when Grieg was alive
----Bathroom tub had very high sides and the floor tile had a very slick finish and they did not supply a bath mat so it was very scary getting in and out of the tub/shower. Many groups of older people stayed here and this could be very dangerous.
----Shower had very low water pressure
----Very cheap and rough toilet paper and very thin towels
----Small and old elevators which backed up when groups were checking in. The safety mechanism is oddly placed and I saw some close calls with people almost being shut in the elevator door.
----No safe for your passport
----The outside temperature was only in the 60s (F) but our 6th floor room was very stuffy. When we tried to sleep with the window open, we were awakened by the people shouting in the street at 3 am.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the new building

We are a family of 3 persons (husband, wife and 14 year old daughter) and stayed 2 nights here on a Cosmos tour. The hotel has three blocks. We stayed in the building having the breakfast restaurant. Contrary to the reviews read prior to our visit, we found the location of the hotel to be central with close proximity to the cineplexes and restaurants and shops. Bergen being a small city, everything was within walking distance from the hotel. The Bryggens museum, Aquarium, Fish market and Mount Floyen Funicular station are all located within 1 km radius from the hotel. Our accomodation located at the end of the passage on 4th floor was spacious had 2 bed rooms (one big and one small), a living room with a small balcony and a toilet. The room decor was outdated and basic and needs refurbishment. The rooms had free wi-fi/internet connectivity with electric kettle which came in handy for making tea/coffee in the room. The breakfast was standard and including some more items such as hash browns and more egg preparation would add more variety .

The first room we got was simply the worst I have seen in my life! For 1300 SEK per night we got an old, worn room that stinked after an old parfume. I had never changed a room before but I had to! The second room was nice and modern. However, we had a view over inner yard and an airconditioning outside made noises that we could here all night long even with our window shut. If I had not prepaid the 2 nights I would have left. Good breakfast buffe though.

There are several Scandic hotels in Bergen. We stayed in 2 of them. The Scandic Strand Hotel was absolutely awful. The website shows clean, and relatively modern simple rooms that were recently renovated. THESE ARE NOT THE ROOMS YOU GET!!! The average price of the rooms is around $250-$300/night. The lobby of the hotel seems nice enough and was recently renovated, however, by the time you make it up to the corridor of the rooms, the stench of an old and tired hotel hits you. When we opened the door of the room, we were truly shocked. The window of the room was left open, because they clearly knew how awful it smelled. The room was obviously a smokers room, despite the fact we had requested the opposite. The bathroom had a dirty shower curtain with just a drain in the floor - no shower tray. The smell in the room was so awful, that we had to sleep with the windows completely open, and even then were not able to sleep because of the smell. The only positive thing I have to say is that when we complained to the staff, they gave us the room for free because the hotel was fully booked. It turns out that although the hotel gives the impression that it has been renovated, it is only the lobby and restaurant of the hotel, and the top floor which has family-size rooms. Beware of mis-representation of hotel rooms in Norway in general. Hotels often give the impression the rooms are one thing, and by the time you arrive, you find out you are paying an arm and leg for something that is COMPLETELY different than what you though you were getting.

Room Tip: Only the top floor of this hotel has been renovated and they are for families.

This hotel is suitable for short stay city break. It was comfortable and clean but a little basic. Small restaurant area but food was good. Small lounge area but bar was in one of the other annexes of the hotel. Secure left luggage room which was useful.

Stayed two nights on a cosmos tour. Did not start out too well. Turned out we were to be in the hotel across the road. Had to cross back for breakfast. Glad it was not raining or too cold.
Nice hotel room but the curtains did not meet to block out the late setting, early rising sun.

Pleasant enough I suppose, but rooms a little basic. Restaurant good but very expensive (even for Norway) . Free WiFi.
