Been to Bergen before and understand that the hotels there are normally a bit on the small side and a lot on the expensive side but this seemed particulalry poor value for money. Rooms very small with no view and beds were very soft. Reception didnt seem to know much about anything - good places to eat or drink, how to get the Hurtigruten bus.
There are other places better value for money away from the main square.

I've used this title before and it's equally true for this one. This hotel is located a stone throw away from the center square in Bergen, "Torgallmenningen". The standard is simple, but all my most important things are there. The rooms are clean and silent, and the beds are comfortable. There's plenty of hot water in the shower and no surprises when other guests in nearby rooms decide to shower at the same time as you. Breakfast is included in the price (which is the standard in Norway) and offer a great selection of food that will satisfy most people.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the back are quieter.

Very good located in centre of Bergen, short walk from train station. Friendly staff. Quite small rooms with a bit too soft beds. Really good breakfast in the neighbor restaurant Egon (included in price in my case). Rooms towards street may be a bit noisy. Good size of minibar with plenty of space for your own food/drinks (really useful considering Norwegian prices). Free fruit and espresso in the lobby. No bar but plenty of bars very close.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms toward street

Stayed at Thon at the end of January.
PROS:
The best part about this hotel, as many other reviewers have noted- is the location. It is smack bang in the centre of Bergen, in the main shopping district, a few metres walk from the tram stop, the station and all the main attractions. Didnt' really get the noise problem- though it is situated right above maccas- but then again I was travelling in winter, during off-peak season.

CONS:
Nothing was horrible, however this is standard hotel- nothing fancy, but everything adequate and nice. The breakfast buffet was simple and enough for me, the service pleasant and the room and facilities suffice. The room was a bit small, however I was not too fussed about that.
I booked through visitnorway.com- they had a special promotion on, so I found that what I paid (500nok a night) was very reasonable.

Overall a good stay, and would recommend this place and Bergen to anyone :)

Finding reasonably priced hotels in Norway with good standard and Ok location is like needle in a haystack…. Bristol hotel in Bergen used to be one of the prestigious one back in the 70s….. anyhow the ballroom named “Speilsalen” on the 1st floor long time gone……….. Today you’re left with minimalistic style, where provide a bed in best location has overtaken style…… price for Norway is ok (1200NOK ~ £140) that includes a good breakfast…… the buffet style…. Location wise, 2 mins walk to fishmarket… 10 mins walk to railway station…. So all in all best place in the city centre Rooms tidy, a bit “cold” Nordic style interior, bathroom with tiles and underfloor heating… Reception small, however free coffee…. Didn’t find any lavish bar in the hotel………… well stocked minibar, a bit slow wireless internet (approx 1mb/s)… Reception staff service minded, actually more than you can expect in Norway……

Room Tip: Get a room facing the city not the courtyard.... unless you like spotting builders....

When the location is the only thing you got going, it sure isn't much.

Situated next to the square of Torgalmellingen, with all it's loud music and noise. This no-charm hotel offers budget style service, rooms, bathrooms etc. The shower dep. is so small, a 5 year old would hardly fit.

From the cold welcome of some "dudes" with tobacco lips, more interested in their ongoing conversation, to the good bye, this was a totally utterly forgettable experience.

I offered a couple of remarks about my room, but the response was a mindless "yeah - serious?!"

The ladies attending upon departure were just as indifferent. And who on earth came up with the idea of hanging big lamps in front of the reception desk!!?? If you're over 175 cm you get to stare in to those big huge balloons in stead of seeing the person on the other side of the counter... (maybe just as well...). Just as silly as the enormous bed side lamps, filling up every square cm of the bed side table. Just great. Who did design this stuff, Mickey Mouse?

Actually, come to think of it, the bed was good. And the room was clean.

In fairness, the breakfast at the adjacent Egon's was ok, sort of. Or the coffee was. Lousy service, ran out of juice, no more eggs & bacon, didn't tidy my table for 30 minutes and so on. One "executive" waitress talking loud and making noise, but more interested in drinking coffee than being useful.

Maybe I was grumpy, maybe they had a bad day. I don't know and I really don't care. It's bye bye, don't think we'll meet again. Sorry.

Room Tip: Up and away.

Thon Hotel is as central as it gets. The room was very nicely and newly refurbished. Not the biggest, but room enough. Breakfast is served in the Egon restaurant in the first floor which is a nice new setting for å hotel breakfast, but was fairly normal in content.
